Keir Starmer: We will be 'judged on actions, not on words'
Labour leader and new Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has held his first press conference at Downing Street.
He said he will have to take “tough decisions” when asked about tax hikes as he vowed to approach challenges with a “raw honesty”.
Facing his first media grilling as Prime Minister on his first full day in Downing Street, he also said the Tories’ Rwanda deportation plan was “dead and buried”.
The landslide victory in the General Election has given Labour “a clear mandate to govern for all four corners of the United Kingdom,” Sir Keir said as he set out plans to tour all four UK nations.
The new Government faces difficult choices over the public finances, with official forecasts implying major spending cuts over the coming years.
Speaking to reporters, he vowed to personally chair new “mission delivery boards” to “put into action” Labour’s manifesto commitments.
And he signalled more power could be given to metro mayors as he announced he would meet with regional leaders of all political stripes during his first week in Number 10.
The Prime Minister said his “door is open” to those who know what is best for their communities as he suggested the Labour Government would be “bold” about pushing resources out of Whitehall.
The cross-departmental "mission delivery board" panels are expected to be set up to make progress on the party’s five key pledges - to drive economic growth, reform the NHS, invest in clean energy, reform the crime and justice system, and improve opportunity through a new skills agenda.
The Prime Minister said he would head the boards himself to emphasise his focus on pursuing the plans central to Labour’s first term in government.
The news conference on Saturday came after he chaired the first meeting of his new Cabinet, which largely mirrors his shadow team before the election.
He said he had told his ministers “exactly what I expect of them in terms of standards, delivery, and the trust that the country has put in them”.

Regardless of your opinion of the Labour party, and I definitely would not vote for them,they simply must be given a chance by everyone . Now it is on their shoulders to deliver this change they lauded so much during the election campaign and should they fail then they can expect the criticism that comes with it but they have to be given the opportunity to honour their pledges.

Meanwhile, another similar country in terms of population, China, has 3 of their companies in the top 10 ranking of "Forbes Global 2000 companies" and has 346 companies instead of only 55 companies in that same ranking list? What about India's ranking in "Fortune 500 companies"? India has only 8 companies in that list and China has 135 companies out of the list of 500 (hence is is called Fortune 500). 8) Indians say that there are no caste system in India? But what are "caste related violence" and why is it still happening? What are the Musahar people and what are their dietary? Has democracy ever had a caste system?
