Using kegs as your preferred packaging and serving method for all that wonderful home brew beer is a fantastic option. Serving draft beer at home through a kegerator or keezer gives so much satisfaction and can be a real wow factor for when you have guests and friends over.
But if you're considering this step, it may feel daunting at the start so in this video we're giving you a 101 course in how a keg works, how some differ from others plus how to maintain them but also why to maintain them!

    Great video! One topic that might not be relevant for this video but maybe for a future one. I have 4 9,5l kegs that were all born with pin-lock. Pin-Locks are fine for what they are, but since most of my other gear is kegland based (various fermzillas etc) everything else is ball-lock based. Would it be possible to do a video on keg conversion in such a case? Things to be aware of like thread size and what ball lock replacements to order etc

    Is there any news on larger kegs, ie 25l to 30l. I see that some of the european manufacturers make these sizes but am yet to see them available in the UK

    Thank you as always for taking the time to help us. The next thing I would like to see regarding kegs is how to keep a keg set at a certain psi when not in use. How do you do this, and do you have to keep turning the gas on & off etc etc?.

    We tend to adopt the on and off method, mainly to avoid over carbonation. The other thing you can add is a John Guest no return valve to keep the pressure in the keg and avoid back flow of liquid. This can help maintain your pressure.

    Corny kegs are built like tanks (no pun). Don't go crazy with stripping and replacing seals in them. I have 2 kegs which date from 2013 and I have not replaced a single seal and it still works perfectly. I only literally took it apart the first time to fit a floating dip tube and all the seals look fine. So I didn't bother replacing them.

    If you ever have a keg losing pressure, add some pressure to the keg and spray the lid, posts and prv with soapy water. You'll see bubbles where leak is.

    The hobby changed for me the day I got my first Corny. Packaging went from 2 hours of mind-numbing bottling to 30 minutes straight into a keg!!!!!

    Improved even more for me. Packaging went from bottling to attaching a picnic tap. I pressure ferment in my keg. Afterwhich goes in the fridge and serve straight from it.

    Once you get your head around, and find a nearby source of CO2, you won't look back from kegging. I also ferment in a 19L corny keg. No silly plastic pressure fermenters required!

    Apols for the (irrelevant to video) question. But do you know if/when you will be getting any of the new Lallemand Yeast & Enzyme sachets in? Particularly interested in the LD-20 and DA-16.

    A word of caution. A common cleaning technique is to 1/3 fill with warm water and cleaning solution, close it and shake it around. DO NOT leave the keg like this with the PRV closed. If you want to leave hot water in it, open the PRV or put it under CO2 pressure. When the water cools the pressure in the keg will plummet below atmospheric and it can implode damaging the keg and making a massive bang.

    Haven't CAMRA OK'd the use of CO2 in cask beer if only to replace the lost volume rather than air to reduce the risk of oxidation?

    I believe so, however it's still for the publican so arrange and implement this or cellar the casks well.

    How about just cleaning and water rinsing after use and starsan rinsing right before next filling?

    Depends how long it’s going to be stored for and if you leave it open. If you are going to do this, make sure it’s completely dry so as to prevent and mould/bacteria growing.

    @@themaltmiller8438 Thank you. Follow up question: if the keg is treated with starsan after cleaning and then sits closed in the corner for three months before next filling, would you disinfect it then again?

    Couple of things. Since Star San is acidic I wouldn't leave any solution in the keg long term. Yes, I would always treat the keg with Star San or similar just before kegging a beer.@@fsbbs
