Everybody blames the food. But nobody blames the lifestyle and age. I eat mostly vegetable and fruit, nuts and have followed a meat free diet for years. Yet, at 63, I got diabetes and then I started to pass urine with difficulty. The next 3 years was hell. I couldn't pass urine at all, ended in hospital and had a tube inserted for some weeks. Before the hospital, little urine was passing with a hot, burning feeling that strained me. At night, 5-6 times had to go to the loo. It was that I had developed a UTI. As the diabetes went to Type 1, the condition got worse that, after some times I had to be medically checked by my doctor. It wasn't cancer, it was the stage of diabetes that was worsening and causing the prostate to grow. So I was put on medication to keep the diabetes under control and another medication to help reduce prostate growth. I was told to avoid wine, coffee, sugary foods and drinks. But the underlying problem with passing burning urine more often at night than day revealed that I had a sleep problem that led to high blood pressure. So, 2 more medication were given, one for blood pressure, the other used whenever UTI and similar tract infection reappeared. I always eat a diet of natural vegetables, fruit and nuts as recommended here, with fish dishes included on Fridays, but had not realized for years that a meal of these recommended vegetable described here eaten at dinner were the blame for my dilemma, of getting up and rush to the loo, because these vegetable meals eaten in the evening were producing considerable water (excess urine), and while I was asleep and dreaming, the bladder becomes bloated and causing pain. So, it's like turning the mind into a battleship where it wants to sleep and the bladder want to discharge (drain), the more I tried to sleep the more pain I'd get from a bloated bladder. This then turned out that as the bladder built up to 'full', UTI builds up as well and start to inflame the wall lining of the bladder and urethra, causing intense burning pain as well as developing this sensation that also cause the urine to pass in trickle and not fully drained. All in all, I had then decide to avoid eating vegetable, pasta and any food that retains water from cooking (all that absorbs water), as this water in food eventually has to be strained as excess by the kidneys, resulting in filling the bladder faster and increasing the number of times I had to hit the loo, quickly before I started to drip out of control because the burning sensation and the need to discharge the load does make you feel that you're actually dripping. I reduced the vegetable intake and that made a big difference at night, 2 times to the loo the entire night, the burning sensation had reduced, the urethra muscle locked well and the dripping feeling gone back to normal. The same problem I had in Summer, when I drank a lot of water and eat water retaining salads and fruits, like Watermelons, etc. These increased more urine but that was during the day that caused the same need to go to the loo as to that of the night. At least it wasn't bed time and the urge to discharge urine during the day was more controlled, as soon as I felt it, I'd go to the loo. No bloating here. I'd give you an example, eating a watermelon, which has a lot of juicy water, or eating any other fruit with juicy flesh increases the amount of the water intake that the body has to filter from the foods, and that's how you will feel bloated with a full bladder and in need to empty it. Eating all this in the evening has the same effect that created additional problems where our circadian clock are forcing the mind to sleep, while the bladder are forcing the mind to wake up and hit the loo. This battle for decisions to sleep or wake up and go to the loo often causes sleeplessness and headaches in the morning. But the situation is the same when eating watery fruit and vegetable at dinner time, instead of a light, waterless meal that produces less water to discharge. I have been experimenting for the past 3 years and controlling what should be eaten at what time of the day and I feel better despite being diabetic, even the prostate medication and the correct diet and what to eat during the day (lunch) and evening (dinner) has made a massive difference in health and well being. I still have green tea, a cup of coffee and half a glass of red wine at lunch but not in the evening where it sits there and not digested properly and taken to bed. Whereas, during the day these are digested properly throughout movements, working, exercises, running, etc.

Mick, thanks for your experiences re to food intake. I've noticed that kind of food consuming and time are very important factor. Prostata problem is also diagnosed by PSA... even ot is sometime deceiving factor... When trouble with prostate start no return back to normal life.

Mick, that's quite a useful experiences shared over here, and I'm sure a lot of people can take a cue from that. I have been having difficulty getting back to sleep after using the loo. Quick question: What is your typical dinner meal now that helps you to use the loo frequently and ensure a good night sleep? Also, what are your go to breakfast & lunch?
