KDNL-TV news opens
The following video features various news and talent opens from KDNL-TV in St. Louis from the start of its news department in 1995 to its closure in 2001, and from 2011 to 2013.
KDNL started its news department in January 1995 with the debut of a 9 p.m. newscast; seven months later on July 1, upon switching from Fox to ABC, the late newscast was moved to 10 p.m. and a 5 p.m. newscast was added. The news department was shut down in 2001, blamed on a transmitter failure that resulted in the station's relatively limited news viewership switching to KTVI (from whom it lost the Fox affiliation), KSDK and KMOV. Sinclair struck a news share agreement with KSDK in 2011 to produce twice-daily evening newscasts for KDNL, which ran until January 2014.

Wow, I remember Leslie from many years ago in Charleston SC for WCBD, she was a very popular person. Always wondered what happened to her. News people move all over the US, they come and go. A station where I live in SC can't keep good people, they are always on the move.

West of the Mississippi River, yes, but WXLV-TV ABC 45 of Greensboro, North Carolina also pulled the plug on their newscast for a similar reason. Another TV station, WTWC-TV 40, the NBC affiliate in Tallahassee, Florida also discontinued their newscasts, and now, their Fox-affiliated subchannel, WTWC-TV 40.2, carries the newscasts...being positioned on the UHF dial (14-36/38-69) rather than the VHF dial (2-13) had serious repercussions for these stations in the age of analog TV where low ratings were a concern, now that Fox took the legacy VHF positions of many former NBC, CBS and ABC stations in various markets both big and small, with varying effects on viewership of NBC, CBS and ABC while the Fox network ratings got stronger in various markets with ties to NFL football as a result of the various 1994, 1995 and 1996 network switches throughout the United States.

Disney should by Channel 11 someday from Nexstar since Sinclair screwed channel 30 and they should join The CW instead

30 was actually an independent when it signed on in 1968. Picked up Fox in the 80's, switched with KTVI, the ABC station when Fox bought channel 2, then Sinclair bought 30 and gutted the place.

The secondary call letter meaning is D (4th letter) + N (14th letter) + L (12th letter) = 30 (channel number). Spectrum News produces WXLV’s news, which means WXLV hasn’t completely been ruined by Sinclair. Also, Sinclair tried selling KDNL, not once, but twice. The first time, they sold only the radio stations, the second time was an attempt to purge some Big Three affiliates to focus on its Fox and WB stations. Both sales fell through.
I'm not a fan of Sinclair but their early version of a newscast on KDNL/ABC30 was not bad. Presentation was clear and crisp, but it seems like Sinclair didn't invest in the station. However fast forward to today there all happy and giddy because they owned some of the most power player tv stations in big markets ie. WJLA, KOMO, KATU and still no local news on KDNL....smh

He got sacked for shooting off his mouth; now Sinclair will own Fox 2 and ABC 30. We'll see what happens.

And that didn't happen, either, as Sinclair screwed up and Tribune canceled the deal.
