    KDE is my favorite desktop because I can set my theme to match my wallpaper, choose my theme colors in settings that include matching file folders and selecting colors, and it has the most features, yet is still super fast. No other desktop compares, IMO. I like Cinnamon, but I think it needs more flexibility like I find in KDE.

    The Hague is the English name. The very official name is 's-Gravenhage or translated; the Count's Hedge (Private Enclosure) and it was the hedge of the Count of Holland. The Dutch name mostly used is: Den Haag, closer to its 1242 name of "Die Haghe"

    Thanks for the details. My comments were about it having "The" in the name because of it being a sort of nickname indicator for other places. Den & Die both translate to "The" so it seems to me that in Dutch its still doing the same thing.

    8:55 One of the weird things about snaps is that Ubuntu preinstalls special versions of them. The preinstalled versions aren't running the latest stable version, but a version built specifically for your version of Ubuntu. Both 22.04 and 24.04 have the snap stored preinstalled, but the 22.04 is based on Gnome Software and 24.04 is the new flutter version. Annoyingly, the new snap store doesn't have a stable release yet despite being used on 23.10 and 24.04.

  • @michael_tunnell

    @michael_tunnell

    The reason I think the difference still stands is because a Snap is only so flexible. In order to backport the new Flutter version to 22.04 would be enough work to not make it worth doing I suspect.

  • @michael_tunnell

    4 күн бұрын

    Hey thanks for commenting and sharing your thoughts. What makes Ubuntu an incomplete OS in your opinion? What is missing? Though, I will say that LMDE does not get the latest updates because Debian "Stable", which is what LMDE is based on, does not get the latest updates so LMDE has no way to do that. The next version of Mint will start getting kernel updates on the main stack but as of now, it doesnt so even Mint on Ubuntu is not getting the latest updates. That's okay overall because Mint is not trying to have the latest and thats fine if that is what they want

    @@michael_tunnell - LMDE's base is stable - correct. No new software but the Cinnamon desktop is always up to date much like Neon / Tuxedo OS. Regarding Ubuntu - when I used Zorin - everything works. The software store is flawless, and I can install Debian packages from the software store with no issues. Meanwhile, Ubuntu, the OG of mainstream Linux, falls behind needing GDebi or Synaptic. I like Ubuntu but can't use it because there is always some sort of hiccup. Not so on Zorin or LMDE.

  • @michael_tunnell

    @michael_tunnell

    3 күн бұрын

    I agree about LMDE but quick note about KDE Neon. Neon is a testing ground for Plasma, it is not meant to be used as a daily driver for most people. Neon's messaging about this used to be pretty confusing but they fairly recently fixed this to be more clear. " Featuring the latest officially released KDE software on a stable base. Ideal for adventurous KDE enthusiasts." As for Ubuntu, you mentioned everything works in Zorin but I have seen reports that the lack of installing local debs has happened in Zorin as well. I am not sure how accurate that is because I havent tried it myself. Ubuntu allows you to install deb packages other than local files downloaded from the net but they also are adding that back now too so its not an issue anymore. Are there any other things that makes it incomplete?

  • @SecularSkeptic

    @SecularSkeptic

    3 күн бұрын

    @@michael_tunnell - I used Neon as an example and also referenced Tuxedo OS doing the same thing regarding to a stable base but the DE getting updates. LMDE is not a testing distribution but it is similar in concept especially with Tuxedo OS. Again, LMDE's base is stable and as the Mint team releases updates to the desktop, they flow to LMDE. Zorin works compared to my experience of using Ubuntu. Ubuntu either has installation difficulties or needs GDebi or Synaptic for Debian packages. The Ubuntu LTS should be complete upon release - it is far from that. I used to be an Ubuntu fan - no more - I just stick to Mint or Zorin.

There's no way anyone is going to buy that in a laptop so expensive. Actually, I would like a RISC-V SBC that performed at least as fast as a Raspberry Pi 5. It would be great for a local cluster, even if it was a little more expensive than the equivalent Pi 5.

If you want to buy a complete device, consider DeepComputing's full laptop instead - it's apparently much more powerful.

I would hate for a new user to try an install steam just to get horribly unhelpful message and they conclude linux sucks. There needs to be more effort on tightening the user experience and ironing out "minor" bugs, because a new user will always compare their experience against windows or mac os. New features are nice, but random glitches or cryptic error messages WILL turn people away, it's just how people are

    Switched all my Linux workstations and dual boot laptops to Mint Debian Edition months ago. Dont like the way Ubuntu is going. I realize there is a need to standardize Linux to a point where first party developers can use an OS to base App releases and support on. I dont think it should be the Ubuntu Fork. The support should be based on Debian native in my opinion. Ubuntu was my first desktop Linux but they seem to be making as big a mess as Gnome on their break to be "individual". Im not saying people shouldnt use forks. Im saying if people want first party support of software they want developed for Linux they should go Debian.

  • @michael_tunnell

    Hey, thanks for commenting and sharing your thoughts. In my opinion, Debian is both wonderful and a problem. Debian takes 2 to 3 years with no consistency for each new Stable release and between releases Stable sees practically no updates for anything outside of security fixes. This is fine as a foundational distro but for me a distro has to check every important box to be the standard. The slow updates of hardware support means making sure stuff works in Debian as the standard means anything that updates faster will not be guaranteed to work properly because it isnt being tested against new hardware and new software stacks. Debian is not the go to Linux distro for a lot of reasons and because it is not really that popular, making stuff work for it as the base level means a lack of support for other distros like Fedora, openSUSE, Arch, etc even forks like Ubuntu that move much faster. I dont think making DEBs or RPMs as the standard would be a good thing. I think Flatpaks should be used as the standard and that way it doesnt matter which distro it is.

  • @michael_tunnell

    @michael_tunnell

    3 күн бұрын

    Having Flathub is great but the rest is not going to be optimal imo. I assume LMDE has app updates solely for Mint apps. I assume it only has security fixes from Debian unless related to something Mint made. LMDE is slow to updates at the same pace that Mint Ubuntu is and somewhat slower. This isnt necessarily a bad thing but it is a difference tthat is there. I think a good sign of why Debian cant be the standard is because many people see it as too slow and want more, in your case you chose LMDE partially because of that right? So the Amazon thing was blown out of proportion in my opinion. There were so many people who started attacking thing making baseless claims. The first Amazon thing with the Unity lense was a huge mistake, they absolutely screwed up there but not in the way people claimed. Some people claimed that this was "Spyware", the person who started that rhetoric lacks any credibility with me but it gets much worse when I found out that Canonical had buffer servers in the mix so when you sent stuff out it went to Canonical not Amazon and the buffer servers stored nothing it was just to send queries for the search results. This means there was no data collection, there was no spyware whatsoever and etc. It was still a very dumb idea overall because its like they didnt even test the function before shipping it. The experience outright sucked and that is without a doubt the case but the reason it sucked was not what was claimed by most. I think it is fair to say that it was a dumb idea and should have never happened but the other stuff is just nonsense.

This is why the results changed upon every key stroke because it wasnt waiting for the query to be sent but rather realttime streaming through the buffer server. This is also why the results were hot garbage because if they were saving the data they could have used the data to improve the results but they didnt which meant it looked bad for reputation and provided no value at all. It was a very dumb move. lol

    If you are referring to the news about Ubuntu, they are letting people install whatever they want. This was news about them adding the feature to the App Center
