Kazuo Ishiguro | On Being Human | Edinburgh International Book Festival

Ғылым және технология

Having added 2017’s Nobel Prize for Literature to his 1989 Booker Prize, the unassuming Kazuo Ishiguro has quietly been established as one of the world’s greatest living authors. It is a far cry from his early years as a writer, when he also worked as a residential resettlement worker at the Cyrenians charity. Yet this was surely the kind of experience that lends novels such as 'Never Let Me Go' and 'The Buried Giant' such tenderness and grace.
With 'Klara and the Sun,' Ishiguro has produced another deceptively simple novel, in which the writer’s pen strokes leave plenty of gaps for the reader’s imagination to fill. Given that the main character is an Artificial Friend - a humanoid machine trying to forge a relationship with the teenage girl who bought her - the effect is all the more remarkable. Ishiguro’s abiding interest is in the complexities of human relationships, in the enduring power of love. Hear from a true modern master as he shares his ideas with author and critic Erica Wagner in this unmissable hour of discussion.

It's always joy to listen to Kazuo and the way he talks to the interviewer. He is not clear with the revelation of his writing process and all that but he tries to tell us all something valuable......

Fantastic. I was absorbed the whole way through. What a wonderful brain, and writer. I’ve come away inspired.

Absolutely fantastic and very helpful interview, thank you!! I’m only starting out as a writer and there are many important take away messages. Top of my mind now, the relationship focus rather than individual character sparkling, leaving some pondering and underlying philosophical issues unanswered and the fact that even the masters must accept their loved ones criticism 😊❤

Stumbled across this interview, so glad I did, found it fascinating and I will now go read some of Kazuo’s books. Great insight into being human.

I’m a little bit confused…is this a brand new interview with Ishiguro or a re-post? Because this interview was during the 2021 Edinburgh International Book Festival. Can someone please clarify? Thanks!

I'm watching this interview on 2nd September 2022, and have checked the description as a result of your question. It gives the date and context there: as you say, Edinburgh ... and 2021. 😍

I found Klara and the Sun strange and disappointing. The AI character reminded me too much of the humanoid characters of Never Let Me Go.

That's interesting. In what ways did she remind you of the "students" of Never Let Me Go, if you could elaborate.

The story sounds so boring, like it was an act of mechanical imagination.

Kazuo Ishiguro gave us a glimpse into one of the biggest aspects of his process from the 51 minute mark, yet you cut him off with a banal question from the audience at the 56 minute mark. Ugh... I would've loved to have listened more on what he had to say about that. It's like hearing half the secret from one of the greatest author's of all time.
