Sure, safety equipment isn't as sexy as a new spinning reel...
But it's way more important - it could literally save your life!
So in this video, you're going to learn the 8 safety items I always have on board with me, as well as 2 other tips to keep yourself safe out there.
Of course, there are obvious items like life jackets and whistles, but there are also some things you might not have thought of that would be really helpful in an emergency.
Hopefully, you'll never need these items, but if you do, they could save your life!
Have any additional safety tips or equipment?
Let me know down in the comments.
And please share this with your kayaking buddis so we can all be safer out there!

Hey dude, another tip I learned that may be worth passing on. On my PFD with permanent marker I put my name, phone number, blood type and any allergies. Just in-case the worst case happens and SAR/rescue or someone finds me alive but unconscious they know that critical info and if I have any allergies. Great video, and thanks for sharing!

Never thought about using a anchor as a safety tool but opened my mind up to the idea of having one now. Thanks

One thing I would say about the pocket knife is 100% how important that little thing is. For most functions that I would use a pocket knife for a straight edge blade would be my go to. However, for watercraft purposes I would carry something with a serrated edge as it will cut through line and rope much faster then a straight edge. All in all great list and really like the manual bilge pump. I have a basic bailer cup, but that pump looks like it would be a lot more efficient.

Helpful! Tethers are helpful to keep paddles or essential items from floating away

Safety first! Fan-BASS-Tic advice! I never use an anchor because I fear the wind/current could cause me to flip. However, I now realize if I had an anchor when I got caught in current and forced through underpasses too low for me in the kayak. I grabbed the top and flipped! Maybe an anchor would have stopped me. Even if I flipped, I’d have been in a better location (I went through the underpasses and had to beach at a person’s home and haul the Hobie up a hill). Great tips! Thanks. Roger, The Smiling BassHole

EPIRB is always a great thing to have on your body. Not in a boat that could float away.

Hey Tony. I’m new here and to inshore kayak fishing. Great video. I realize this video is a year or more older, but I have a couple of questions. If you are on the water before sunrise or after sunset, is an all around light required? And if so, where should it be placed and how high should it be?

Great question! Make sure to ask this over on the actual blog or in the Community (www.saltstrong.com/) where the coaches spend their time. The blog can be found here: bit.ly/3qHRpU1

AUTOMATIC INFLATABLE LIFE JACKETS ARE GARBAGE! They don't always work! I use a simple snorkel vest. It's hi-vis and the fill spout is right under my chin. 3 good breaths and I'm floating! $20-50 vs $200 for something that's unreliable.
