Kawasaki Vulcan S | First Ride And Review
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
Here is another awesome installment of the first ride and review series. Today we are riding a Kawasaki Vulcan S. This is a great little cruiser. With the power plant of the Ninja 650, configurable ergonomics, and excellent handling, this bike is sure to please. Here are a few of my thoughts and experience with a day riding the Kawasaki Vulcan S.

I have a 2016 Vulcan S and it's everything you could ask for! It's got power and it's comfortable. Perfect for the beginner! And you won't get bored on it.

Nice man. It is an awesome bike.
Stop moaning about the forward footpegs! You're obviously not used to them. Ride the bike for a few days in a row and you'll wonder what you was going on about. Ride safe.
I think it's fair to say that Kawasaki makes the best looking bikes ^_^

*I am a young at heart (born 1949) rider. Today, I am eagerly waiting for my KAWASAKI Vulcan 650 Cafe (ABS). It will be delivered Tues 19 Dec 2023. Thereafter I’ll hit the road AH1 (Asia Highway 1) from Bangkok to Northern China Mai. 680 km. Soon, I will have two bikes. My old ‘Thumper’ =RE= Meteor 350. Two years. Mileage 30,000 km. All over sunny Thailand in tropical heat and heavenly downpours. No more 350 cc Royal Enfield! Enough is enough! The nasty VIBRATIONS! Thanks for the chronic Wry Neck (Torticollis) And the Neuropathy (numb right hand throttle hand & fingers) usually after one hour in the saddle. It’s been good to know ya! =RE= No more. There is a Royal Enfield Super Meteor 650. But, I chose the 650 cc KAWASAKI cruiser. I am sure you’ll understand. The ‘KAWA’ Ninja 650 cc engine and the KAWASAKI’S reputation, legacy. Greetings Johnny BikeSanooK! I’m KZreadr, too. My channel: CarSanooK. OK. Thanks*
You are the exact person I was wanting a review from. I am wanting to get a vulcan s coming from a ninja 300. Just for the type of riding I do I think this would be a good fit as it kind of has a bit of both worlds.

So...how do you feel about forward controls? ;-) Seriously, great review, so thank you. Most of all, I'm so thrilled to get a review by a fellow-5'7" rider! To see you flat foot that stop early in the vid was just music to my...eyes? Anyway, the Vulcan 650 is becoming my front runner for my first-in-awhile bike. Thanks for the input!

Samuel Lopez Jr. Trade it for a Vulcan S 650 ASAP. The HD Street 500 is a cheap feeling bike, no tach and no gear indicator, and very uncomfortable. The Vulcan S is one of the best bikes ever made. I can hardly wait to buy one. I think it may just be my ultimate dream bike, as long as I get one in either matte pearl white, or the SE red version.

Nice review sir.. How about the throttle response in all rev range? Is it accurate and smooth?
I'm curious if you had a chance to also ride the 650 versys? I know it's the same engine, but I'm wondering if one is tuned differently than the other?
The engine side is no news, this is the same ninja 650, er6n, versys 650 in a different ergonomic package. Interesting though. Kawi is doing everything possible to keep on using that twin.

Heard of the ergo fit on the kawi? You can move the foot controls back 4 inches.
I want this as my first bike just one question as i am going to start driving fairly soon if i would buy this bike then want a car later would my good score of motorcycle insurance be transferable to cars to get cheaper insurance when i want a car later on in life? Thanks for any help guys
Thinkin about getting one , had a 500 Vulcan and the wife and I took long trips on it . I like forward controls , do need a windshield a really good backrest and a tow hitch , set back on the bars and it's good to go for me . A 650 isn't that small , remember when a 650 was a monster ?

Great review and it's a gorgeous looking bike. Definitely needs an exhaust upgrade to give it a bit more of a beefy sound. I've had the opposite experience where the forward controls go. A cruiser is my first bike and my first time on a sport bike had me feeling all awkward and I really couldn't get used to having my feet slightly behind me.

I'm in a dilemma... Been looking at getting the MT-07... But also like this Vulcan S. I'm getting one of these two bikes for town mostly, but a couple 300 mile trips a year. The Vulcan S looks like it would be better on hwy... What is your opinion between the two?
I agree about the forward control. I hate it. The main reason I don't buy it. I feel like my foot is too far away from the ground, and cannot react fast enough if something goes wrong.
I'm pretty sure there are suspension options for stiffer or softer rides
Great review, especially from someone who rides a similar sized bike as me. The Vulcan S is one of the bikes I am really thinking about upgrading to in the future, and I am definitely looking more into comfort. My Honda CBR 150 has a little more aggressive riding posture compared to the Ninja 300. My back starts to hurt after an hour or two riding it. It's either the Vulcan S or the naked version of the NInja 650 (ER6N) for me in the future. After watching this video, I am definitely torn between my next choice of bikes lol.

One point on comfort, something I edited out of this video, I complained about how uncomfortable the forward controls are on this bike. Going down the freeway, it felt like I was being drug by my feet and hands. Seat was awesome though.

I didn’t get his point either😂 Apparently you use your foot to steer. I’ll let the manufacturers know that handlebars don’t matter😂
@BarryObaminable
4 жыл бұрын
leg movement puts more weight to one side i use the leg on the side we would be pushing forward to countersteer. you can stand a little and move right. While you can use either leg to do this, if you use the opposite side, there is a chance your foot slips and goes to pavement. This is not possible on the 'push side' as when you slip, your foot hits the bike, not air.
I'm going to move from the CBR 125 to Vulcan S, it made me laugh hard that people say that the vulcan s does bad on the freeway when I've done thousand of miles on the freeway with my CBR 125 xD I think I'm going to enjoy my freeway rides like nobody else with the vulcan S, bye everyone! ;)

Nice. Thanks man.
have to disagree with thoughts on the forward controls. mine (Kawasaki Eliminator 125) are kinda mid-slightly forward. what I cannot get comfortable with is my legs tucked & curled under me. at all. I absolutely HATE that position. also, the "naked bike" thing... & again, FOR ME, that's the best thing about cruisers. I love being part of the ride. give me the wind & the weather. let me & the bike steer & lean & ride the elements as two halves of the one whole. I prefer to be part, not just of the ride, but of the whole environment OF the ride. I will say & it should be well noted, this is highly subjective - horses for courses, as the saying goes. Many thanks for the honest review. to be frank, been looking at this boke a bit lately & you just made me want it more ;)

snap with first bike- i really loved it. gently cruising in back roads nice and easy going and relaxing. 1.5 years now with a ninja 300 and im seriously considering a cruiser again for exactly the reasons you describe. Whats the point of hanging off/knee down in corners on a sports bike on the roads. save it for the track- on the road its a quick way to get a ride in an ambulance cause it just begs to be ridden hard.
Just picked up one of these today(well, yesterday technically. It's 2:30am now) as my first bike. 35 mile drive to my house and dropped it a half mile from my place(so close!). Need to master those low speed turns, still a fun bike though.

+John Kersey Yeah, when I first started on a cruiser, I struggled with low speed turns a lot as well. Congratulations man!
So I was wondering if any of you could help me decide something, I've been thinking about getting my first bike at the beginning of next year, I really like the Honda NC700X because it has DCT and my friend says that makes it 1000x easier to ride, but I'm worried that 700CC's is too much for a beginner, Do you think the DCT out ways the extra CC's in riding difficulty or should I go with a smaller none DCT bike to start out on?
@ThisLifeRiding
7 жыл бұрын
My policy is to always start on the smallest bike your situation allows. The smaller the bike the faster you can learn and the more fun you will have. I started on an 1100cc cruiser. It was fine and I didn't die but I wish that I had started on the Ninja 300 instead. I have learned so much more quickly on the smaller bike and find it much more enjoyable to ride. Plus, I think it would be better to start with a manual bike so you can learn all the skills necessary for shifting. Just remember, you can always upgrade later.

Hey, thats awesome. The Ninja 650 is a great bike. I haven't had the chance to test ride it yet but everything I hear is great. I once considered buying it over the Ninja 300 but the 300 was more in price range and a little lighter. What are your thoughts so far?

I love my bike!! It's fits me perfect as far as flat footing goes. The power is awesome and the seating position isn't to aggressive or to relaxed it's perfect. I got mine for $3600(it's a 2012) off Craigslist but it did need a new rear tire so a little bit more in the end. I didn't think pricing was to bad(definitely not the $2500 some 300s run for) but the bike was in great condition and over all a steal😊 10/10 would recommend pic- instagram.com/p/BLDCEFQjGPjhTAeEK6Q8MOHem4mYMKul5IMmlU0/

Hell yeah, especially in heavy traffic when you need to keep your feet on the ground.
I am used to foward controls so they don't bother me. What I am not used to is when they are too far rearward. I grew up in the 60's and the foot controls back then were straight down below your knees. Anything farther rearward seems very uncomforable to me, at least on a long ride they would be. I like the Vuclan S because it is NOT a V twin. I've had cruisers since the mid 90's and I'm tired of V-Twins. If I ever buy one I would equip it with a flyscreen, I think a full size windshield would ruin the bike's good looks. And I would add a luggage rack so I could add a top box. It may look dorky with a top box, but I'm spoiled after having two HD TriGlides with top boxes. No more bending over searching through saddlebags for me. Of course I'm 70 years old and don't care if I look dorky. At least I'm not wearing plaid pants.
What kind of controls does it have again?

I've looked into this bike as a second bike, one that my wife and i can ride together. Going from a Ninja 250 with its controls right under me, the Vulcan S forward controls took some getting used to. Nice bike though! I am trying to decide between this one and a Shadow Phantom. ~Ride On

Hmm, sounds interesting. Let us know what you decide in the end
My wife has this bike and there is enough power. For the reviewers who say it dosent, there most likely the same ones who say the Polaris scooter is a rocket. Well the Vulcan s is only 2 tenths of a second slower 0-60.
I've only driven a motorcycle for about 20 hours and learned on a Yamaha 600cc cruiser don't remember the model because it was like 6 to 7 years ago and haven't ridden since. I will say that the forward controls is a major deal breaker. Ugh just seems scary having those controls where they are.

+kwazykilla87 Yeah, I can understand that. I find controls that are more central are more confidence inspiring for newer riders.

Hey there Mr. TLR, I just got back from my first day at MSF and I was really weak with the throttle/clutch handling and just riding in general. Any quick tips you can give me before I go back tomorrow? I kept stalling the bike while trying to take off using the friction zone as they were teaching us, and got moved to a scooter that's an automatic, but I really do want to learn how to operate the manuals. Thanks! and also thanks for the great videos
@gilly66369

dragonvslvr to prevent a stall you have to accelerate the bike as your releasing the clutch a quarter throttle should do to get the RPMs up.
@ThisLifeRiding
7 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I would say try to engage the throttle earlier. As you let the clutch out, roll on the throttle. Think of it as one motion rather then two. Feel free to cover the clutch and pull it in if you feel like the bike is going to stall. It will take a little practice but I think you can get it. Ask them to let you start on a manual again and just practice letting the throttle out a little earlier. It just takes time. I remember my first manual car, I killed that thing so many times before I could stop without it stalling.

Listen to the engine. When you let go of the clutch, the engine slows down, it get quieter. Just compensate with the throtle so that the sound stays the same, the more you let go of the clutch, the more throttle you put, so that the sound stays the same. And the bike will move forward :)

I know I am late, but in your humble opinion, how would this bike do on a weekend trip with just a back pack strapped on. Let's say 350 Miles, (A 5 hour ride according to google maps)? Just cruising at 70 MPH? Yea or Nay? And can the Ninja 300 do that same task?

I would much rather take the Ninja 300 on that trip. The forward controls and lack of fairing coverage just make this bike a little too uncomfortable for long freeway stints. Ninja 300, on the other hand, I love to take on long trips. Never had a problem with it.

Vulcan s
What do you think would be best to start on? Sport bike, Crusier, or Supermoto? I've been considering all of these options and I really can't decide what I feel would be the best. I absolutely love sport bikes, but I am not a very confident/crazy person and I worry with the leaning you need to do to take turns that could really screw me over. Supermoto would be nice because once I start riding my dirt bike a supermoto would be a very similar bike that I think I could feel safe on, with experience. Crusier I really have no idea or experience, but they are always out there. Whatever I buy would still be in the 300cc range for my own piece of mind and somewhat cheap. I still have a long while before I ride and my situation is that this will be my first and only vehicle, to school, out of town and all of that.

I have a maintenance contract with GO AZ Motorcycles. Whenever I get the bike worked on, I get a loaner bike for the day. I pay about 80 bucks a month for the Ninja 300. There are a lot of things that affect insurance rates. Age, driving record, and vehicle, can really impact your rates. Someone under 24 on a supersport is going to pay through the nose while someone over 24 will get a much better rate. Yes, it has the same engine. They detuned it to better suite the Cruiser profile. Same thing happened when they put it in the Versys.

Haha, sorry man.
At your inside leg length bring the pegs forward and you will be happier
A good slip on will cure that quietness Two Bros or Vance Hines

Two words..... Ergo Fit. Change to your specs. Also I want the ABS.

Sure. This bike can be modded by the dealer into several configuration. I always tell people to sit on one to know for themselves though.

Security Lloyd The Vulcan S has 3 different settings for the set and the pegs, two different settings for the handle bars, there's standard handle bars for mid reach and riders with longer arms, then handle bars for riders with shorter arms. The set has a short reach, mid reach, and extended reach set and pegs. Pegs can be moved by changing the positioning. the handle bars and the seat have to be changed out for different ones. I can tell you a lot about a Vulcan S because it's the bike I started on and still currently ride. Or you could go to the Kawasaki website or just go to a Kawasaki dealer near you. Extended reach is for taller riders. Bike also ways in at about 498.3 pounds.
“You can no longer use your legs as much to control where the bike goes”. The hell are you talking about? There are parapalegics that ride bikes, because you don’t steer the damn thing with your legs

Did you ever ride the Ninja 650? You'd probably like it.

Sat on one but never ridden. I originally considered getting the Ninja 650 over the Ninja 300 but the Ninja 300 fit my budget a little better.
A lack of confidence is from the 350 ninja ride.

Good fun though, I'd like to see them make an unrestricted one in Aus and maybe bump it up to an 800cc or so for more advanced riders. That being said it was a laugh when I tested one a year or so ago
At 6ft 1 there is no way to make this bike fit. The whole ergo fit is NOT for tall riders.
I wish there was some way to contact you. I'm a fellow KZreadr who would love to pick your brain.

OK. Thanks*
If you listen closely enough, that bike sounds kind of like your ninja

+TheOnly PUG ThatRides Yeah, kinda does.
Light weight, peppy engine and best of all, IT'S NOT A V-TWIN. I hate the chug chug chug of a V-Twin. You complained about the forward comtrols, but that is a matter of choice. I was going to but Triumph SPeed Twin but the foot controls were too far rearward for me. i like my feet straight down from my knees like the bikes were in the 60's or forward controls. I will never own a bike where my feet are rear set. It's just a mtter of choice. Once you get use to wha\ich ever you like the control of the bike comes natually.
second like....

ThisLifeRiding Then why still keep whining about it if u do have experience on forward controls?
Think too much power for starter learner bike
Whine about forward footpegs
You have just as much control with legs up front as back -_-
i AM SAVING MY MONEY FOR THIS AWESOME MACHINE VULCON
Both feet on the ground is POOR riding technique. You shouldnt be encouraging new riders to do it.

You actually don't know what your talking about when you say you don't have control with your feet forward. Its not a sport bike so you're not used to it. Go back to riding 300cc training bras
