Scores:
After my initial score I add or subtract points relative on how I perceive value (based on what I paid for the bottle). A zero value means I think the price is justified.
0-69.5 - Don’t bother trying, life is too short for bad spirit.
70-79.5 - Worth trying, but you’re not missing out if you don’t.
80-84.5 - I recommend trying.
85-87.5 - Definitely try this!
88-92.5 - I recommend buying a bottle blind!
93-95.5 - Stuff you reserve for special pours!
96+ - The meaning of life.

This was part of my massive Kavalan haul. Can't wait to open it. Just like you I haven't cracked a solist I didn't love. So far the 12yr virgin, the sherry(oloroso) amd the Manzanilla (favorite so far). Great notes, this should be my next uncorking, Cheers 👍

Great review Jeremy. I have had the PX bottling thanks to you. :). It was delicious. Yesterday there was a live tasting and a live virtual tour of the Kavalan distillery in Taiwan plus an STR barrel demo with each stage shown. Fascinating. Out of the tasting I enjoyed the Vinho Barrique the most and there was a Port Cask bottling too but I will never forget that PX sample you sent. That is so far my favorite of any Kavalan I have tried.

I killed the last 2oz of that bottle the other night, amazing stuff! I think the Kavalan bar has living casks you can order pours from, so cool! I want one in my living room :)

@@SippersSocialClub Yes they do. The host Larry Schoen (who is a Canadian living in Taiwan as the Kavalan Brand Ambassador...go figure.) showed us the tasting bar and 4 living casks sitting there. His IG handle is @whisky_truth if you want to connect with him. Huge distillery grounds but pristine and the concert hall and other music related venues there are clearly reflected in the naming of their whiskies.
Great review, dude. Can't wait to pop mine.

I gotta get another :)
Had a 200ml bottle of the standard solist sherry cask. I found it over the top with oak on opening. Poured it into a 750ml bottle and left it for 2 weeks and it settled down quite a bit and was more balanced. Definitely a rich dram. Cheers Jeremy

Ive had an Oloroso solist that needed a good month to open up.

@@SippersSocialClub Yeah maybe it was more like 4 weeks ? I had a Balcones single malt single barrel at that same time and it's just ridiculously over oaked. A month in half filled bottles settled it down some but it's not for me. Also had at that same time a Cut Spike Nebraska single malt CS that needed the same treatment but it's really interesting. They are pretty serious about being a malt Whisky distillery and bought pot stills from a company in Glenrothes Scotland.
My favored so far is King Car. It’s incredible. Some Soloists coming up soon, may need to reevaluate
I got my friend to bring me a bottle of this Straight from Taiwan to add to my collection.
This sounds awesome😋 had to settle for Talisker 18y tonight😄 Have only tried the cheaper ones but really love the sherry oak bottle 46%( Watered down Solist sherry)

Talisker 18 is the best! For the taste and value.

Talisker 18 is a fine pour :)
Bought my first bottle of Kavalan when I visited Taiwan couple of years ago. Picked up the Solist Oloroso Sherry 1L travel retail version at the airport, for what is equivalent of ~200CAD which I thought at the time was expensive for its age. But as soon as I tried it I had to take that comment back, it blew my mind how a young sherry bomb can taste so good and much beyond its actual age. Still have about a quarter of it left, dreading the day when I savour the last dram.

Nice! What year was it distilled? Some of the 2006 Oloroso's are epic!

@@SippersSocialClub Mine was distilled March 2012 and bottled December 2018. I wish I was into whisky earlier!
You looked like you just toured to haven and came back at 1:40 😂
Ive only had the Port, oloroso, and Vinho barrique and I like the port the most. surprising since going in id figure that would be my least favourite based on my experiences with other whiskys but its quite good
@SippersSocialClub

LOVE the port, cheers
I think my favorite Kavalan so far is a toss up of the 9 year Solist Kavafan Oloroso Sherry cask and the Vinho Barrique. I have not opened the 13 year VO yet. so..
@WhiskyInThe6

That Sherry was epic. The port from kavafan was legendary as well. Still have to go with the virgin oak as my favourite.

Some of the vinhos Ive had are amazing, but the virgin oak is something else
I've just recently gotten on the Kavalan bandwagon and have yet to be disappointed with anything in their Solist lineup. So far, the PX would be my favourite, but I've only tried a couple thus far. We have a tasting for the Amontillado, Manzanilla, Moscatel, and PX lined up so that should be interesting!

Think of it as a 25 year old scotch at cask strength haha!
The fino is so gewd. It taste like a 25yr mature whisky while retaining the cask strength abv

@@SippersSocialClub you just got this too right? Give it a month or two to open up and it will become even better...at least mine did.
Great job! Thanks a lot! how does this compare to the Port Cask?

I've had some great port casks! But I'd score them a point or so less vs this
I heard you reconmend the tobermory 21 manzanilla finish. Is it comparable to the bunna manzanilla? Can buy the tobermory for 130 eur
@SippersSocialClub

hard to say, but i think I like the Tobermory more
I found a bottle of this today. It has a date stamp of 2016.04.16 on it, so I assume it was bottled that year??? I hope it lives up to the billing you gave it. Also, the price was $250, so I felt I couldn't pass it up

Depends on vintage, but probably Fino for me
