one of the best way to interview an artist is to allow the artist to express ... which most of the media lacks.. thats why i like this interaction as she was allowed to express her opinion... wonderfully done ..

This was more than interview. I have never seen any Indian artist express the connection between music, spirituality and philosophy in such a graceful way. This is a rare interview, very well done. Kaushiki Chakraborty is the reason I listen to Indian classical music these days. She is Devi Saraswati, the goddess of Indian music. Great job OSR. Every universe is covered by seven layers - earth, water, fire, air, sky, the total energy and false ego - each ten times greater than the previous one. There are innumerable universes besides this one, and although they are unlimitedly large, they move about like atoms in You. Therefore You are called limitless (Bhagavata Purana 6.16.37) Because You are limitless, neither the lords of heaven nor even You Yourself can ever reach the end of Your glories. The countless universes, each enveloped in its shell, are compelled by the wheel of time to wander within You, like particles of dust blowing about in the sky. The śrutis, following their method of eliminating everything separate from the Supreme, become successful by revealing You as their final conclusion (Bhagavata Purana 10.87.41)

It literally encompasses a life's lesson, for teachers, students, parents, kids, bosses, co-workers, a religious/ spiritual environment -- no matter who and where you are. I can't Thank You both for conducting this interview with Kaushiki ji and sharing with the rest of the world.

I have been away from India for 30 years...but India cannot be taken away from me. I have no musical talents other than singing in the shower, but I used to listen and watch Indian classical music on Doordarshan, almost had to force myself to do it, since I had no understanding, but just the sense that what I was hearing was the result of centuries of evolution of human artistry. Kaushikiji makes a very valid point when she says that people like Rick and Korbin being much more relatable to the present generation are doing a great service to Indians and to the world by venturing into Indian culture with the curiosity of a child, totally unknowing but discovering a hidden treasure that when shown to the world can only produce harmony and peace and love. And yes, I will be there to watch when Kaushikiji visits UCLA. Thanks a lot, all three of you.

This is an iconic moment in the history and growth of OSR. She is a supreme musician. Thank you Rick and Korbin for patiently listening, for respecting, for allowing her to express and articulate herself so very beautifully. She is a pride of India, still so underrated for her extraordinary capabilities as a singer. Thank you so much for this.

Hey, I'm a Carnatic musician here. I would like to state that not everything in Carnatic music is structured. There is a creative space in Carnatic music as well! It's not like Carnatic music is so structured and rigid. When she said that Carnatic music is structured, she meant that there are more scales and compositions. She didn't mean to say that Carnatic music doesn't have creative part. In fact, in a Carnatic music concert, the most important piece is the one with creativity. Hindustani style is much liberation in terms of how things are rendered. For example: In a Hindustani composition, a singer can change the scale, change or ignore lyrics. But in a Carnatic performance, you cannot change the lyrics or emotions set by the composer. But, you can do the creative part after you singing the composition once, and then change the way you sing. This is done because in Carnatic music, we have a principle that we should not dilute the emotions and lyrics of the composer. So we sing the composition completely, and then we improvise. That's what she meant by saying it's structured. Cheers!!

I cannot agree that Hindustani Classical is so flexible as to allow, under musical regulations, to alter the notes to bend the emotions and change or ignore lyrics. I see musicians paying less attention to lyrics amid musical articulation, but I doubt if that falls under permitted guidelines of classics.

I think she said that Carnatic training is relatively more structured than hindustani. That doesn't mean Carnatic is a 100% rigid. Listen carefully. PS: it seems that she has also learnt Carnatic music as shown in Rajya sabha TV interview.

Music in India has always be been about the divine, hindustani or Carnatic. But in the case of Hindustani, it's later patrons were islamic rulers. It was just a form of non spiritual entertainment for them. IMHO, This is why it allows a lot of Liberty to change the lyrics as we please etc. OTOH, Carnatic music is still rooted in its olden values of spirituality. Hence considered slightly more rigid. But not wrong.
