Performing lieder is a very specialized talent. The singer needs the kind of training and technique needed to perform oratorio and opera; however, the ability to deliver this kind of song to an audience requires a specialized talent that not all singers possess. My reaction to this performance by Ms. Battle is that no one could have performed it more beautifully.

Perfect singing. But she should have reduce her gestures. This song in an "inner monologue" not a performance like Voices of Spring.

Hello, EK. I am a male tenor doing experimentations on using my voice in higher and lower registers by using the Chipmunk-filter on Snapchat. I am choosing this performance because the piano is recorded clearly. Thank you for you criticism of Miss. Battle's performance. I will keep your words in mind as i near my recording date. By the time I pull this off, if will have digitally isolated his piano from my her voice, than then used his paino as my accompanyment. (If interested, here is a little sample of one of my Classical Munchkin works on my u-Tube channel) - kzread.info/dash/bejne/fnWr1qSEobLenMY.html

Absolutely beautiful! She can make the whole world stop around her with the beauty of her instrument and the sensitiveness of her phrasing. The way she creates the mood is almost unbearable! I was barely able to breath during the entire thing. Outstanding! Plus, the legato could not be smoother, the diction, crisper or the photography, more romantic. You also couldn't ask for a better pianist. The communication between voice/piano here is just great! It's everything being tied in four minutes!

There is no one better than Kathleen at this sort of song. Anything requiring beauty of voice is not going to be beat by Kathleen. Wow! Amazing thing is that now, in 2017, she sings just as well - saw her at the Met welcome back and once she was warmed up it was 1987 all over again. Magnificent.

I agree, but I hope you've heard Gundula Janowitz - in my opinion the greatest lyric soprano of all time.

Totally transcendental. Closing the eyes brings you to a divine realm. Only miss Battle is capable of transformation of such totality

Extremely touching performance, so different from the majesty of Jessye Norman but equally valid and equally beautiful.

How wonderful this is - typical of Kathleen Battle who cares for every note and expression. Dan Saunders very fine too. An excellent duet.

I would put this version a close second to the recording by Dame Janet Baker accompanied by Gerald Moore
