The transition to high D at the last phrase is stunning, and she was able to fall back in key seamlessly. I’ve never heard any other artist do that with this arrangement! It has to be a gift given exclusively to Ms. Battle! ❤

That performance of Kathleen Battle was a top quality performance. It was nothing short of outstanding. Throughout the song, she had total voice control. There were no flaws.

Heard her live in recital with the Minnesota Orchestra in my hometown of Minneapolis. The woman is a true Diva, yet she got fired from the Metropolitan Opera for acting like one. Magnificent singer. Glad to hear she's coming back to the Met this Spring.

Such an array of comments that made attempts to marginalize and downplay her stellar performance, displayed in this footage... Many non-Blacks could not and cannot process this level of natural vocal skill/texture by being a women of color; especially from a Black woman.

I'm sorry to say this was not a recital it was a met gala. Kathleen Battle sing 2 songs the first one was called Ride On Jesus and then of course he's got the whole world in his hands. it was at the beginning of her career. her first performance at the Met was The Barber of Seville and she did a very good job. I was impressed I recorded it and still have the tape. Agape too all. and check yourself before you wreck yourself. no I'm not black take care

When you are black, you have to behave yourself. At all times. White people can misbehave till the cows come home but they are always given a pass. Maybe his piano accompanist was not very good? And i bet this accompanist waswhite which makes his feelings far more important than the lady's craft.

Kathleen Battle was diagnosed with bipolar disorder. please don't torment those that are mentally ill. that's why she was fired from the met. when she got this horrible disease under control she continued 2 sing. please leave this great lady alone. I know I am not black. I am not partial everyone is equal in my eyes. agape love to all of you just enjoy her. a Aria from The Barber of Seville una voce poco fa . is absolutely fabulous listen to that one. this is after she got control of her mental illness. take care Kathleen we love you carry on.

@@victorlewis3130 These trolls don't go to Maria Callas' videos and spew this hate, although she was also fired from the Met at one point, and would actually physically assault people in rehearsals, among other horrific behavior. The bias is far too apparent.

@@arnoldamaral7406 Kathleen Battle, who was "fired" by the Metropolitan Opera at the very height of a stellar, brilliant career was a victim of a conspiratorial whispering campaign. I was a firsthand witness at San Francisco Opera. A group of "men," whose sole purpose of being volunteers for performances was to take pictures with opera stars, and pretend to cozy up to them, praise them to their faces, etc., found out Ms. Battle didn't play that game. I witnessed how they began by calling her a BLACK "B-word" backstage. This was followed by some ignorant ranting about how she held her mouth, and many other insulting pieces of gossip. FACT THEY DIDN"T KNOW: It got back to her, and she began to disengage from those backstage non-professionals, and her envious co-stars who perpetuated this "mean-girl" behavior. While she felt she should be able to prepare for, and perform her work at the best of her ability, this "negative work environment" harassment got to her. Yes. She asked, no doubt, that those onstage not stare at her. Who wouldn't. How can you stay focused and in character while your colleagues, and extras, stare at you even when it is not in the plot or music? Eventually, I am sure it got to her. These same "men" reported her adamant, firm requests/demands to stay away from her to "Management". If you are a BLACK QUEEN, you have no doubt lived through similar hounding: You get enough complaints to your management on any job, that you are "Difficult" to work with, and BAM! Management starts to believe the reports, even without knowing the rest of the story. Your perfect work undermined, you're out of a job. For Ms. Battle, it nearly meant out of her career, in which she towered over her proteges. Learn from that story. What you hear is not always the complete story. BUT everybody believes it. IT CAN DRIVE A PERSON CRAZY. It drove Ms. Battle to the Lord GOD! An advocate in the time of need. First, the Billy Graham Crusade engaged her to sing spirituals at that same time. Then, Wynton Marsalis recorded and performed with her. Then, other Jazz legends. God brought her through. Don't believe what the "industry" says about BLACK WOMEN, or MEN. Remember, James Levine was molesting very young men at the time he fired her! Placido Domingo was insisting his ingenues play the game with him! Both worked in Opera long after Ms. Battle was fired for "unprofessional" behavior! It took TIMES" UP! for people to began to see how this stuff really is behind the scenes!
