She shows why she's got superior gifts. She retained basically the bulk of that coaching, and used it in that performance. Which is pretty astounding... the tone was round and not "thin" or spread, like Kat was complaining in the lesson. Round and big and vibrant. It's exceptional.

No its not, thats for sure! It takes lots of practice and the voice is really a "double reed" instrument with the vocal chords and folds becoming the instrument reed. and sinuses, and the chest cavity the resonators. It also means controlling sibilance and "plosive p's. And seamlessly moving through your vocal registers. All without strain or you can get vocal fold nodules. And you have to learn to not only do all of that but do it with appropriate emotion. And of course you have to be able to tell an Ab from an A# You have to work at it constantly - and discipline in diet, activities including proper sleep and physical strength. Having a vocal coach is very important BUT the coach has to attuned to the type of music you intend to sing. An operatic vocal coach could do more harm than good for a pop singer and certainly vice versa. Listen to Sarah Brightman in Phantom (of the Opera) or Idina Menzel singing "Defying Gravity" from Wicked.... masters at work.

Love Kat's humility in getting help from Natalie! 😍 I've followed Kat since she was on Idol in 2005 and have always loved her tone. Her belting used to get so high-larynxed, nasal, and thin in her mid-upper range, though, so I am happy to see how much she has improved since then.
