    Hepburn never shows up at these awards because she could never stand losing in such a public setting and she knew it was the best way to win attention by not being present. According to Jane Fonda, Hepburn was a very competitive person. When she later won her fourth Oscar, she told Fonda, "You'll never catch up with me now!"

  • @dalekdx

    @dalekdx

    Hepburn was also someone who avoided the press and the ceremonies most every actress attended. She also had a routine of going to bed at dark and waking up at 4 AM. She normally was informed about her Oscar wins the next morning. Probably the most under reported thing about her was her great sense of humor. When she said "You'll never catch me now" to Fonda she was probably joking. Just like the time Barbara Walters asked her if she owned a dress and Hepburn replied "One, I'll wear it to your funeral."

    That is not true to my knowledge. Kathrine Hepburn, never attended theese award shows, because when initially started her carreer, they called her "poison". In the beginning of her carreer she was blamed for the fact that the movies she was a lead in, never sold tickets. So in the end no one would hire her because of theese bad reviews that critics gave the movies. She ended up asking and PAYING someone to come up with a script, which she should have the lead role. She would pay for everything herself. And it was a huge success. All of a sudden the media and tabloids named her a genoius, and the best actress ever. Kathrine was appalled about the behavior of this. That they could just change their mind on a whim. So she never attended any award shows, regardless of the award. She showed up to 1 mayor award show, but it was only to acknowledge one her very good friends, for his achievements. So no.. it wasn't because she couldn't stand loosing. It was the spin of the media she didnt care for.

    @@PhantomTemple Actually president of the Academy at time Gregory Peck begged her to come to the 1969 Oscars. She told him she didn’t want to be in the audience if she lost. I think she liked to win, but it wasn’t the be all end all for her. The Lion in Winter Oscar remained in a paper bag for years after Harvey the director who accepted for her delivered it to her. Plus she said in the Cavett interview the Hepburn kids were raised to be the center of attention, so there was an ego there to be satisfied.

She deserved her win but, common, she couldn't beat Hepburn's monologues in The Lion in Winter (I could peel you like a pear and God himself will call it justice, We all have knives... we are the killers..., what a desolation...). Hepburn's stare when Henry kiss her mistress and her talk with Richard (Anthony Hopkins). Both of them deserved the Oscars. Streisand's character was a revelation but the Academy didn't care much about that. The Academy evaluated performances, NOT CHARACTERS.

    Katharine Hepburn won four best actress Academy Awards. Of the four Oscar's she won this one for 'The Lion in Winter' was the most deserving and she had to win it in a tie. The other 3 that she received could easily be taken from her and given to someone else. Two of Hepburn's nominations 'Alice Adams' in 1935 and 'Long Day's Journey into Night's in 1962 were easily her best film performances and she lost the Oscars both times. People in Hollywood either loved or admired her or hated her. In an article I read about her I remember director Joseph Mankiewicz quoted " Katharine Hepburn- the world's greatest artificial actress" They worked together and apparently he hated her.

    Became an instant fan after watching Funny Girl and what a journey the last 50 years have been, watching Streisand's career. i feel very lucky to have been able to first see her at age 12 and continuing to watch her meteoric rise to fame. She's still loved by millions of fans around the world and respected for her beautiful voice, her intelligence, and for giving the world her beautiful music. i also love her for speaking out throughout the years for those groups of people who, otherwise, wouldn't have a voice.

Streisand would be the first to say she was lucky to be mentioned along with Hepburn. The establishment in Hollywood never really cared for Kate- she snubbed the awards all 12 times she was nominated.

    Notice the only person she didn't Thank was her husband at the time, Elliott Gould, who was sitting next to her in the audience. They were actually going thru a break-up at the time and would promptly announce their divorce months later. But Elliott was a gentleman who showed up as Barbra's date that nite. I'm sure her quick rise to fame was a heavy burden on any man who was married to Streisand at the time. To Elliott's credit, he has rarely -- if ever -- bad mouthed Streisand in public.

    Too bad the Great Kate never liked to attend the Academy Awards ceremony and in fact, only attended ONCE as a presenter several years after this. Her performance as Eleanor of Aquitane in THE LION IN WINTER was one of the great classical performances ever rendered on film. And it also marked the film debut of ANTHONY HOPKINS. My only regret is that the late, great Peter O' Toole did not win for his richly deserving performance as her King. As for Barbra Streisand, that was probably one of the BEST acceptance speeches ever even though I have never seen the movie.

    What a wonderful moment. Three-time Academy Award winner Ingrid Bergman, one of the greatest performers in the history of the art form, honoring two of the most gifted women to ever have their faces illuminated on the silver screen, each giving legendary performances. Katharine Hepburn, the dame of Hollywood, taking home her third Academy Award, thirty-four years after her first, and her second in a row, and Barbara Streisand, the powerhouse-it just doesn’t my get any better than this. And what a field. Five women, all of whom won at least one Oscar in their careers, with Hepburn and Streisand being joined by Patricia Neal, Joanne Woodward and Vanessa Redgrave. Bravo, ladies! Bravo!

Put THAT performance in ANY other year besides 1972 (Brando for The Godfather), 1980 (Robert De Niro for Raging Bull), 1982 (Ben Kingsley for Gandhi), and 1987 (Dustin Hoffman for Rain Man), and F. Murray Abraham WOULD STILL WIN.

    Sorry....I thought Gaga's nomination was born of personal popularity, and I kind of thought it might have been manipulated into reality by the Academy to inflate tune-in ratings for a show that's been in years-long steady decline. IMHO I thought Gaga was nothing special. Cooper, so much the better actor, really propped her up. And the dead giveaway to an actress's limited range (cmon guys, she's NOT an actress), was her inability conveying grief to emote convincingly in close up, so they resort to the trash-the- furnishings-in-rage scene...always a default when the talent's just not there. I'm sure she'll never win in the future. Look at Cher, also a top pop star in her time, but brilliant in "Moonstruck"...Gaga could not have pulled that character off, and she's an Italian from New York City!!!
