Katfish - Dear Prudence
Музыка
Katfish was a band in Lewiston, Maine in the 70's. Moe McKenna (bass) & Jeff Wright (lead guitar) are the 2 guys on the left... The drummer is John Hart. Nick Knowlton is far right.
To see a list of many of the bands on the scene back in those days, check out this website I found... it'll bring back memories for some of you: www.billsnighttrain.com/id57.html

The biggest fan of this song was an 8-year-old boy in Easton, Pennsylvania sharing a room with his older brothers Timmy and Eric, who introduced their music-loving little brother to many bands flying under the Top-40 radar. Though if memory serves... I first heard this on one of those "Sound Explosion" compilation LPs I bought with my pocket money. Either way, this is a brilliant example of a well-produced and -recorded remake bettering the original.
I'm the drummer's brother: Jim; I came back to this page to see how many, if any, were fans. I had no idea how many people loved this version. We used to affectionately call this: "Dear Prunejuice"(4 no reason but the sound of it:). I used to think Mainers loved the tune because they(Katfish/Speed Limit/Kahtahdin) are Main-ahs(that's how we pronounce it:). To my amazement, I felt, at that time when few were doing remakes, that they were riding on the back of the Beatles; but, if it sounds good

I first heard this version way back in 1975 by happenstance. It caught my attention. Couldn’t recall the name of the group. Nobody else on radio unfortunately played it again. As least in LA. Didn’t hear it until just a few weeks ago while surfing through KZread. Wanted to find out how many bands have covered this. I just bought the promotional single a couple of days ago. Great musicians, and a great arrangement.
Wow... I'm reading these comments and I can not believe how many people had that Ronco "Sound Explosion" Too wow!!! Peace!
The first time I heard this song was on the K-Tel album. I didn't learn until later that it was a Beatles song. Yeah, I probably shouldn't admit that... LOL But I sure loved this version...
That's my brother John, the tallest one. The photo was taken at the Armory in Lewiston. They were opening for some big name band, can't recall who. Andy Govatsos was managing them, and tried to give them a new look. Kiss was new and theatrical make up is what was becoming popular. Moe(left) was the only one willing to try it out.

Oh lord that photo :) If that was my kids would never let me hear the end of it! Solid tune!
Damn good version of this song!
1976, 5 best friends just finished our Junior year of high school. We're all piled in an old pickup truck hauling ass down the levee road on the Rio Grande valley. It's late June, a sunny day, we just got a case of cold beer and this is blasting on the 8-track. It didn't get any better than that - good times. Thanks for the memories.
Truly, my all-time favorite cover of any Beatles' song. Love the use of the echo-o-o-o. Lovely.

This is a great cover but Earth Wind and Fire's cover of Got To Get You Into My Life still tops my list.
Back in 1975 I was looking for a '45' of this song, but I was looking under 'C' instead of 'K' in the record store and never found it. Found a demo copy about 20 years later. Awesome song!

Lol that explains why I couldn't ever find it. I swear the 8-track spelled it with a C.
I didn't know much about music when I first heard this, so I hadn't realized until later this was a Beatles song. 😀
these guys did for dear prudence, what elton john did for lucy in the sky in about the same year.(1975) i remember hearing it on a k tel album called (sound explosion)

That's where I first heard this song. I didn't realize until later it was a Beatles song. :D
Excellent rendition.
I heard this song today on KXFM 98.3 Lancaster, CA (online) KFXM-LP is a low-power FM radio station broadcasting an oldies music format, from a large record library spanning the 1950s, 1960s, 1970s, with over 35,000 selections in rotation, including novelties and instrumentals.
Oh, man! I saw these guys perform at Deering Oaks in Portland, ME. I think it was late 70s? I met them all and got an autographed poster. Great memory!
I thought I was the only person in the world who knew about this song. Thank you. I haven't heard this since the late 70's. Thank you again!
RIP Nick Knowlton.
I just heard the full version of this song here after 42 and a half years. Before, I had only heard the edit from the Ronco "Sound Explosion" album. Even better as I figured except puzzling ending.
Listening to it again 😂 ... your version of this song has so many memories with my friends
Taped this great version off the radio in 1975. Confused about who's version it was - until now!
Incredible version produced by the legendary Bobby Herne at EAB Studios in Lewiston ME. Came out first on the local Gonad label (with picture sleeve), later picked up by Big Tree, and also released overseas on Phillips. They hit a grand slam with this brilliant psychedelic cover!
BEAUTIFUL !! Can't stop listening! !!
This song was on an 8-track that I had as a kid, called "Sound Explosion". It was a mix of R&B, ballads, some rock songs, etc., and was released by K-Tel records (it was one of those TV ads at the time, around 1975). I begged my parents to order it - it really did take 4-6 weeks for delivery! Anyway, I've since found every song that was on that 8-track, on Itunes. Except this one. If any of the original band members read this, please release this if you can.

This is amazing
My mother loved this version of this song. We listened to it a lot when I was a child. Beautiful song - thanks for posting.
Been looking for this since it came out on Big Tree records.
still remember the first time i heard this version in Warner Robins, GA around '74 or 75. Loved it and it is a great cover and better than any other bands tribute. so psychedelic! thanks, i was searching for this version for awhile but didn't know who did it.
Aha! I LOVED this song when it came out. I was a young teenager, starting to pay attention to music for the first time. Thank you for posting this and for solving a decades-long mystery for me.
TY 4 posting this. The BEST cover version I've ever heard. Had looked for this song for years, w/no luck till now. Love Katfish. They should have been huge back then. Moe, John, Jeff, and Nick-luv ya from KY as well as Tennessee. Great version!
Holy crap! This is great! I had this 45 forever, it was gone when my mom sold her home years ago. I remember going to the Waterville Me, YMCA to see these guys, and being inspired to play guitar. Many years later, my band opened for them in Lewiston *then named Speed Limit* and it was a thrill. One of the best rock bands to come out of Maine in my opinion.

hey been waiting 40 + years to hear this and more from this band was a best friend of steve hart and clint knowlton knew most of the hart family great to hear this again jon [jonathan] sawyer
I couldn't remember the name of this band, so I just typed 'dear prudence' and hit return. KZread helpfully pretended it never heard of this version - until *I* remembered the band. Thanks YT.
The drummer (3rd from right) is John Hart. Nick Knowlton is far right. Hi Ray, I see you beat me to it. You're always on top of things, good to have your memory. I have a pretty keen one too!! ;-)
Splendid job, fellas! You did it justice.
Hey, DayLightStranger! Thx for posting this video! I've been looking through all internet for this song, which I haven't heard for about 30 years! Thx so very much! Keep posting good old things like this! See ya!
What a great cover...thanks for uploading!
I heard this all the time on WJBQ FM, Portland Maine. It was as good if not better than the Beatles version. I listened to the Beatles version last night and then wondered later, I wonder if that other version is on KZread. I finally remembered the name of the band while in the bathroom. And here it was. Awesome! So pleased. Maine, always the trend setter ;-)

we had this on an 8-trac (K-TEL lol) in the 70's and it still sounds great today!

My sister had a copy of this song on a compilation called "Sound Explosion." That 1976 album was produced by Ronco (not K-Tel as a few other people posted).
Ronco's Sound Explosion
Hey Katfish fans, did you know that DayLightStranger just uploaded the song from the flip-side of this 45? It's called Street Walkin' & it's also really good!
This version suddenly disappeared just as it was flying high. I was told by someone (A local DJ) that The Beatles sued the hell out of Katfish forcing katfish off the air and as part of the settlement that they couldn't even step into a recording studio together or solo as they didn't get permission to do the song and release it. Does anyone know if this is true? the local label was Gonad Records and the national was Big Tree/Atlantic. I never did see an Lp from them.
I remember this tune being played at a record store in the Maine Mall around 1974.
Thanks for posting this DayLightStranger! Hope you are having a great Christmas! Love, Pauline

@hartistry1957 I love this version of the classic. I remember I had the RONCO Sound Explosion lp. I miss that album. So glad I found this video.
Wow...I haven't heard this in years. Where's Butch Tardif?
Nick also recorded a magical pop single under the name "Jonathan Cloud" circa 1970 which is worth checking out.

Pretty Cool Thanks for Sharing. Link no longer works
Rarely do I like a remake better than the original, but this, and Gimme Shelter (Stones/Grand Funk) are some of those times.
Don't know if the Beatles actually took legal action or threatened to. Perhaps someone conected to Katfish could comment. Great cover I remember it went national and folks were very proud of the band

I'm from Westbrook and knew this song; Old Beatles song but they did it better
I had that same 8-track
entered Cashbox Sept 20, 1975
They played at my high school. I heard this version before I heard The Beatles version. I like them both. Ultimately I like the Beatles version better, but the one part I think Katfish handles better is the "look around..." part. I think the Beatles "Look around, round, round..." part is weak. On the other hand the bass, guitar, and John's lead vocal in the Beatles version are superb.
