If you watch closely, Coach Henes was likely telling her to take her time in the initial part of her leg. After she caught up, to just coast and save up some effort for a few laps. As the pace slowed after 800m she was released to overtake and continue her negative splits which is part of her training. The goal likely is to be able to run the last 1000 negative split laps in 1500, 3000 or 5000 m however fast or slow the initial part of the race is to compete at the global professional level

I can't imagine the feeling almost anyone has when she's breathing down their back, or pulls up next to them. After watching the ACC DMR results, even when kicking a PR in 1600, NC state was only third. The 1200m was again bad, the 1200 was third over all, but the 400 m was dead last losing 8 seconds to the first, it ruined the race for NC state. Tuohy gained almost 10 s against the others yet couldn't win the race because the first two legs were so bad. So Tuohy might not run the DMR in the nationals.

That's something you don't know, First of all Bush took 2 seconds from the others so not so out of it, Shaw comes from injury, they could have sent Chmiel instead, or Chmiel to anchor in the absence of Tuohy. Shaw is rusty but will get better. Heartmann was announced, maybe she could have done better than Shaw that seems rusty.

Have to admit N.C. States woman's cross country and track distance roster gets confusing to follow(lol)!! Meaning who has eligibility left because of COVID or previous injuries. Possibly even the 5th or 6th year thing coming into play. Shaw didn't run cross country this year but ran the 1200 here. Kelsey hasn't been on the track in more then a minute!!! They seem to have 3 really strong distance runners with. Tuohy, Chmiel and Bush. Starliper however got 9th in the 2022 outdoor NCAA 5K after missing most of 2022 and all of 2023 so far. Bush got 10th in that NCAA 5k. Kelsey as their 2nd best runner couldn't participate last track season but just got 3rd in the NCAA Cross Country Championship. It's your basic dream team that hasn't even run with their best possible lineup in both sports. At least I think. Not sure though with all the eligibility rules.
