I think all Australian artists need to cover this song, it needs to be kept alive for everyone to remember

It sucks that there are so many comments just comparing this to the original. I think it was a very fun take on the song. I don't really expect anyone to be able to match the passion and scorn with which Tim sings his own lyrics... not really the point. This is still a refreshing and unique take on it. Rock on, Kate.

i get what you are saying, but thats the brilliance of Tims work. He doesnt just make a song about a point he believes in, but you can see it and hear it when he performs. This is just someone "singing words" and doesnt even make you think about what she is singing about.

I think you assume too much. This would be a very odd choice of a song to cover if she didn't care or have passion about the subject. Tim is just viscerally emotive on a level that is very hard to compare to.

I'm assuming, but it is the feeling I get from it. I 100% agree she must have strong feelings and a passion about this subject to even sing this, I just don't think her portrayal of it was a strong one and for such a serious topic and a serious theme, 'masked' by Tim's "funny" song, I just don't think she really pulls it off to anywhere near the effect of how Tim does

I feel the exact same! The point of this song was never the tune and melody and enjoyment, it was always and still is a protest song and a comic musician just happened to be the one who wrote it in a medium he felt he could express himself through, which was in a song. The point is simply the message

My biggest problem with this cover is that they didn't get tim back to sing as 'God' for that part of the song, that would've been epic

@@adamwaugh3373 that's a bit of a reach. The high court felt that the jury was swayed by public opinion. that doesn't = he didn't do it, and several other judges ruled that he did.

As someone who has followed the massive eruption of child abuse offences in the U.S., at the hands of Catholic clergy, I applaud Tim Minchin's efforts to raise awareness and benefit survivors. And I really enjoyed Kate Miller-Heidke's cover. The priest who married my wife and I was removed from the ministry twenty years after the Archbishop of the diocese knew he was sexually abusing boys. The Archbishop, now deceased, chose to keep knowledge of the abuse from parishioners as well as other members of the clergy. And while this is egregious, it is but one of hundreds if not thousands of incidents that occurred across this country.

there is no "massive eruption" of Child offences in the US by catholic clergy. Over decades it amounts to less than 1% which is less than in many other professions .. Minchin and others have served to persecute an innocent man and put back the cause of child protection

So beautiful, keep this song alive. It's a beacon to those who need it.

@@1234poppycat tbh I have no idea when the bible was written/compiled, but it does have some interesting stories. As for the other stuff, I don't need a book to tell me how to be a good human. But the church is responsible for brainwashing children and using fear to control them. Basically the bible was created in a time to explain things that could not be explained at that time. And to control large populations through fear to keep law and order without using soldiers/police. The concept has served it's purpose but is now outdated.

I think the reprise to this song needs to be called; " So Long Criminal Pell "

It's about how he spent decades covering up abuse within the church by convicted sex offender Gerald Ridsdale, who he used to live with. He tried to bribe Gerald's nephew not to go to the police. This performance was done in April 2017, he was charged himself in June 2017.

There is no evidence that he is a pedophile, wishing so does not make it so. The true corruption lies in the machines of the state and the media working to scapegoat an, obviously, innocent man. He was convicted based on the uncorroborated testimony of one person, whose testimony was refuted by the other "victim", who is now deceased; and the story of how exactly this crime allegedly took place is an obvious fabrication; the events, as described by the "victim", constitute an impossibility according to the amount of time given, the amount of people present, and the layout of the Cathedral in which this crime was alleged to have taken place. Have you actually researched the case, to any degree, or are you just parroting the mindless violence of the mob? This overturned conviction, had it stood, would have been a scandal akin to the Dreyfus affair.

It's not the audio guy's fault. This girl obviously has a pretty weak voice that naturally doesn't project well. She's also singing much higher. With all respect to the performers, this song does not blend at all with her style.

Will Pantaleo it's the audio guy's fault. He could've turned the backing vocals down in the mix but he didn't. Kate is an opera singer and has better control of her projection than most singers so it's far from weak.

George Carlin appears in the movie Dogma - where god is not only played by a woman but by a Canadian. I suspect a better question is can god be an Australian? -).

how to know when you've fucked up... Tim Minchin makes a song about how pathetic you are.... and then Kate Miller Heidke does a cover for it .... its a pity other Australian Artist didn't do a cover of this song as well while Pell boy was still kicking.... im sure they have youtube in hell :P

I really don't think that is relevant, Tim wrote this in solidarity with the victims, and now the message is being shared. I hope more artists pay tribute to his original song.

Actually, although I'm sure she's quite talented, her singing is too high for me--kinda made my ears ring a bit. Although she gets kudos for singing "fucking" there at the end, instead of 'fricking' like Tim did. I have no idea what's allowed on the air in Australia, being a Yank, where NOTHING is allowed!

Yeah ok, she should not have tried this. It's cool that she liked the song and nice to want to perform it, but someone really shoulda pulled her aside and said "Look, you just can't pull this off".

The way she sings cardinal pell is so beautiful and lilting I momentarily forget she’s singing about someone who is now a convicted child rapist.
