I agree! I live in the Arizona desert and it amazes me how well Denis captured that subtle transition from dusk to complete darkness. They must've had to time it perfectly to make that scene.

What I don't understand about this scene is that Kate & Reggie were left unguarded by the Delta dudes & Matt. The latter congratulated themselves with their "clean fucking op" and complained about having to babysit Kate & Reggie - while in fact they didn't: (1) Kate & Reggie were attacked from the side and (2) Kate was able to follow Alejandro and go where she wasn't supposed to go. Two fuck-ups for which the Delta dudes and Matt were responsible and which could have ended worse.

The director stated that Emily Blunt's character represents the audience, you are supposed to resonate with the character because we go in to this drug cartel war without good idea what they are doing or what the purpose of it is. You are supposed to be clueless and idealistic. Not to mention, the team brought her only out of formality just in case shit goes south. She is the scapegoat if things go bad. Remember the part that "you need at least one domestic agent overseeing them to operate in US soil"? They intentionally picked her over her male partner because she would be more obedient while the black guy was questioning legality and transparency of the whole operation. She got picked because she was not questioning things that much

@@user-rc9nf4gx3gso true I think this movie was Villeneue way of testing the audience sense of morality through Kate’s perspective to serve true justice, but all of that was out the window when you heard of Alejandro’s story and realize what Alejandro did was right even if Kate were to turn in Fausto to justice which we all know doesn’t exist in the real world

She left her weapon (which is SI), she left her partner who told her to cover him, she went after one of the key players in the operation because she wasn't down with the plan. any of that surprises you? How did you know expect that I get the need for FBI on the "team" to make US operations legal but even the lawyer would have been better in reality. Kate is unbelievable as an FBI agent let alone a team leader & an assault team leader of all things. She's might as well have been pulled from first day basic or boy scout summer camp for the amount of good she does anyone from start to finish of the movie let alone in this pathetic scene. Just total amateur hour it's almost as "believable" Emily blunt as an fbi janitor let alone an actual agent or tactical leader as Denise Richard in James bond as a nuke scientist. At least get someone that fits the point. Angelina Jolie or Scarlett Johansson even Elizabeth Olsen would have been a more believeable fbi agent then Emily Blunt.

White phosphorus tubes are the gray ones. They give a more clear picture and are more expensive to produce. I assume that the different shots here between Kate's old school green night vision PVS-14s and whatever those dual tube NODs that the Delta guys had that were not only white phosphorus but also thermal capable (as shown by the blood and footprint thermal signatures left from the pointman when they entered the tunnels) is to serve as a reminder of how the CIA SAD guys are on a completely different level than the "humble" civilian law enforcement. In reality, law enforcement agencies for the most part, depending on which type and jurisdiction they are, often have better gear than the military. I know this well as an infantryman in the 101st Airborne Division. I think the contrast between the green and white phos night vision shots was mostly a cinematic tool to show the disparity between Kate and Reggie and the CIA goons. It essentially shows how much more prepared the latter are for, what the movie is constantly reminding us of, a new epoch in domestic conflict. A type of conflict that blurs the line between civilian and soldier. Which is why they need civilian law enforcement to tag along to justify their use of force on domestic territory. It's 4th generation warfare.

You don't ask ya mate what the rules of engagement are when you are in deep on a mission. You are told clearly and unequivocally during orders before the mission. Everyone must know that before setting off on your mission. I hate it when cinema cannot get some basic soldiering correct. It's not hard; you just have an advisor with you. Every soldiering movie must have a military advisor. Hell, every second Jack has served.

Emily Blunt's character doesn't represent the audience POV at all. She jeopardizes the mission by pointing the gun at her own team member Alejandro, for what? She expects Alejandro to just acquiesce and let the corrupt cop go? They'd all be screwed if the cop is let go, herself included. Even if you want to do things "by the book" that doesn't make any sense. I think her character represents the paralysis and ineptitude of trying to do things above-board, and not sinking into the depths, as visualized by their entrance into the tunnels.
