The audience don't know what's going on, they clearly weren't used to this style of singing back then, most of them probably actually thought Kate will be a complete flop because she was so unique and out there.!

What did you expect them to do? Mosh? It's not the sort of music to dance to; more one that takes you on an inward journey. That Wuthering Heights was #1 and she was on Top of the Pops somewhat disproves your assertion that most of them thought she would be a complete flop. She released WH when she was 19 and, as she says at the start, she's 20 when she did this performance. She was already insanely successful. Also, if you watch any Top of the Pops from the 1970s, you'll notice the crowds are nearly always very passive no matter how upbeat the music. Maybe a sign of the times, or maybe they were told not to dance.

I mean, there's a reason the show was called Top of the Pops lol. It was literally a no. 1 hit either at that time already or shortly thereafter... So it's not like people didn't know who she was. But your point probably still stands that they're excited to have been there even all these decades later.

What are you talking about? She was a huge success in the UK and the rest of Europe in the 70s and really has been ever since. Wuthering Heights was her debut single and it was literally a no. 1 hit. All but one of her albums reached the UK Top 5 (at least one entered at no.1), and the only one that didn't still made the Top 10. And that's despite the fact that she only went on a single tour and then decided to never tour again. Sure, she wasn't as well-known in the States back then (don't think it was a focus either though) but even so, she was still nominated for multiple Grammy Awards during the 80s and 90s.

Serene, pristine and deranged, nobody should underestimate quite how shocking it was when the teenaged Bush emerged to the world with this haunting piano melodrama of her own creation. Casting herself as tragic heroine Cathy from Emily Bronte’s gothic romance, perhaps the reason so few pop songs are based on classic novels is that they’d have to live up to this.

Some sort of bureaucratic bullshit involving the musician’s union is the reason the backing track is so weird. She wasn’t allowed to use her own backing track. Instead, the BBC orchestra did their own very rough approximation of the record. Judging from this, they possibly should have invested in a metronome for starters.

Out on the wily, windy moors We'd roll and fall in green You had a temper like my jealousy Too hot, too greedy How could you leave me When I needed to possess you? I hated you, I loved you, too Bad dreams in the night They told me I was going to lose the fight Leave behind my wuthering, wuthering Wuthering Heights Heathcliff, it's me, I'm Cathy I've come home, I'm so cold Let me in your window Heathcliff, it's me, I'm Cathy I've come home, I'm so cold Let me in your window Ooh, it gets dark, it gets lonely On the other side from you I pine a lot, I find the lot Falls through without you I'm coming back love Cruel Heathcliff, my one dream My only master Too long I roam in the night I'm coming back to his side, to put it right I'm coming home to wuthering, wuthering Wuthering Heights Heathcliff, it's me, I'm Cathy I've come home, I'm so cold Let me in your window Heathcliff, it's me, I'm Cathy I've come home, I'm so cold Let me in your window Ooh, let me have it Let me grab your soul away Ooh, let me have it Let me grab your soul away You know it's me, Cathy Heathcliff, it's me, I'm Cathy I've come home, I'm so cold Let me in your window Heathcliff, it's me, I'm Cathy I've come home, I'm so cold Let me in your window Heathcliff, it's me, I'm Cathy I've come home, I'm so cold

@@grinsko6741 No, it is definitely a rare live TOTP performance. Other great live clips worth watching are Eurythmics "You have placed a chill in my heart", Bowie "Jean Genie", James "Getting away with it' etc

Kate was 20 when she was talking to Michael Aspel about this Song, I was 21 - funnily enough although I liked the song (the Chorus of which you couldn't help singing along to)! 🎼🎵.I wasn't a Kate Bush Fan - I'm 67 now and totally appreciate her Talent & Sheer Genius, to Connect and Speak to our very Souls, (how times have changed)! 🧑‍🦳🙏 I heard 'The Man With a Child in his Eyes' the other day on my local Radio- came on u-Tube after reading the Lyrics and created a Kate Bush Playlist! 🦻📻🧔👶👀🎧. Listening to her other songs reminded me how great and talented she is, not just her Lyrics & Singing, but her interpretation of them in her Videos, through Movement, which are Creative, Ethereal, Whacky, Timeless, but Totally Brilliant!🎼🎵🎧🎥🕯️🪽😇🪽🪬🕉️☯️♾️💜💚♥️
