Katana Mythbusting Extreme

Ғылым және технология

Note: This is not degrading Katanas in, Tameshigiri athletes and certainly not Japanese swordmakers. It is just a bit of Katana mythbusting, is all.
---------------------------------------------------------
The Katana is notoriously famous around the world. While it is no doubts a fearsome weapon and extremely lethal in the hands of the practiced master, how dangerous is it really when wielded by a total newbie?
Can a total amateur cut a "human leg" equivalent (Tatami Omote)?
Can a crude home made "sword" (sharpened flat steel) cut an Omote mat?
Can a Katana cut through a cheap steel sword without any damage?
This video has the answers.
A "The Slingshot Channel" production.

It has nothing to do whatsoever with forearm or bicep strength it's all in the wrist I mean for Pete's sake have you ever seen a samurai look like some beefed-up bodybuilder NO they're skinny as shit or about average build let me guess you're probably one of those guys who think that the technique is just the Smash down like you're chopping wood right you'd be incorrect I mean if you're using a broadsword or any kind of straight bladed sword yeah usually those are designed for crashing and smashing but there's a reason why a katana has a curved blade it's designed for cutting not smashing and the technique for a perfect clean-cut is.. as you come down on your target you flick/snap your wrist also most katanas back then were so sharp you could drop a cloth over the blade and just the weight of the cloth would cut it so it wouldn't take much to take off limbs or heads this is why I consider the katana the most Superior bladed weapon ever created you wouldn't want to face the Samurai with one of those

@@anom7715 It's a meme about an anime cliche (and the overly angsty and edgy teens it's made for). Instead of just winning a fight the normal way, someone who's supposed to be "cool" and scary will humiliate the opponent by moving faster than they can see (effectively teleporting) and landing the knockout/killing blow before they can move. The cliche then spawned a meme that's used to mock those angsty power fantasies where the author's avatar (originally Coldsteel the Hedgehog, a parody of edgy Sonic fan creations) teleports behind someone and says "nothing personnel kid" (the misspelling is intentional), presumably before killing them.

@@NaTatkaTiGust his was a lightweight example, being a modern reproduction with quality steel. Japanese steel up until the dutch began trading at deijima was low-quality compared to the rest of the world's. the multi fold forging technique was developed to get useable quality metal out of their iron ore, if they didn't put so much work into refining their billets it wouldn't even be possible to make a sword at all. Period accurate katanas are closer to 5kg, which _is_ heavy for a sword. The absolute heaviest swords known to have actually been used in combat were claymores, at only around 8-10kg. Edit: to be clear, the lower quality steel made thicker and heavier blades necessary for strength. This also lent quite a bit to their cutting ability (obviously) but meant that they were never exactly nimble.

Not only that, he cut the bamboo roll with the halfway point of the Orc blade. If he had cut the mat with the first six inches of the blade, he would have had twice the velocity of leverage. Plus, swordsmen always cut those mats with a downward angle of 45 degrees, and not a horizontal stroke. The Orc sword almost made it.

I’d assume the rule (myth) that only experienced swordsmen could cut mats is a leftover, historic guideline turned dogma, from when the tatami mats where still prisoners’ arms. You don’t want someone hesitating and fumbling when you use prisoners. Just imagine that experience (for the prisoner, the swordsman and the onlookers), and the need to have a rule calling for swordsmanship makes instant sense.

Quality sword is better in some ways and for specific uses, but for general bashing, the cheap steel "Orc Sword" is the better option. Several thousands of dollars / euros / pounds vs el cheapo if you are just going to smack it against things, go for the cheapo model, it won't hurt the pocket as much when you need to replace it.

I had a buddy who was an army vet that had a home intruder once (it was base housing so sometimes "home intruders" were actual burglars but sometimes people just literally walked into the wrong house because theres 300 identical houses on a street and they didnt live there long). My buddy is 6'2", a lean 200lb, and is an Appalachian hillbilly and looks/sounds just like it. He heard a noise and ran down stairs completely naked and then starts screaming at the intruder as soon as he hears him. I can only imagine the terror you feel when you see a 200lb naked hillbilly charging you, hurling random objects at you with his dangly bits flopping around aggressively.

I love your laugh. Kinda random, but it’s exactly how I imagine the laugh of a character in the Memory, Sorrow, and Thorn trilogy by author Tad Williams (which I’m currently reading) to sound. Isgrimnur is a burly, aging yet able bodied sort of knight/warrior with a kind heart and a warm, “cool uncle” kind of demeanor despite his intimidating rough-and-tumble appearance. Not that you’re old by any means! You just have a great laugh and you’re holding a sword so.. there we go! You’re now my mental image for Isgrimnur when reading his parts. Hope that’s okay 😂 (Also if you haven’t read those books and you’re into that sort of thing, I highly recommend them! GRR Martin said they inspired his Game of Thrones series and imo they are better than those) Cheers!
