lassic Footage of Nigel Short vs Garry Kasparov
In 1993, Nigel Short became the first Englishman ever to challenge for the World Championship. It was a welcome change for the chess world which had seen 5 consecutive matches between Kasparov and his predecessor, Anatoly Karpov.
During the Candidates Final - where Nigel was playing Dutchman Jan Timman - Garry was asked who he thought his challenger would be. He replied with the now famous “it will be Short and the match will be short!”
London was the setting for the hugely anticipated Nigel Short vs Garry Kasparov match, played outside the auspices of FIDE for the first time. This video - a free preview of GM Magazine 9: Nigel Short vs Garry Kasparov - includes analysis of the games by GM Ray Keene plus rare footage of mid-match interviews with both players.
The match started in dramatic fashion. Nigel Short, as Black no less, managed to go a pawn up. Noticing Nigel was in time trouble, Garry offered a draw. Short refused. He played the final move to meet time control and… his flag fell before he could press his clock! He had a winning position, he’d turned down a draw… and he’d lost.
The next few games were full of incident and excitement but no better news for Nigel as he earned a solitary draw from the first four. Game 6 was superb. Short played Bobby Fischer’s favorite 6.Bc4 against the Sicilian Najdorf. Most of the minor pieces were traded off early but Short still managed to drum up an attack, breaking through with a Bishop sac on h6.
However, Kasparov had counter-chances of his own and would have checkmated Short if it hadn’t been for a brilliant resource which Nigel had seen many moves before.

Actually did not know that Short had a tremendous ran before the match. Defeating in Candidates round 1. John Speelman 5½-4½ 2.Boris Gelfand 5-3 3. Karpov 6-4 and finally Jan Timman 7½-5½. That is an awesome performance. The sad thing is that Short is mainly remembered by his losses and Kasparov totally dominating him in the Championship match but also the Battle of Legends in 2015 when Kasparov crushed short 8½-1½

Yes, he had an incredible run, unfortunately for him, Kasparov was just too strong and prepared for the WCC!

Nigel Short was so amazing in the years after he left school without taking a degree. He skyrocketed to the world elite, but hit his peak in 1993, and then, despite winning to this very day, was never a figure such as a Kramnik or an Anand or a Topolov.

Vigorous and partisan commentary by Raymond sharp-intake-of-breath Keene. An interesting item nonetheless.

Yes Nigel lost (7.5 - 12.5) but when his #1 critic during the match (Tony Miles) took on Kasparov in a mini-match he managed a truly woeful 0.5 - 5.5. It's really nothing shameful to lose a match to Kasparov.

Short is not of the calibre of a Karpov to shock Kasparov! Keene's commentary is clearly partisan. Kasparov went on to crush Short as he has done so many time before and after!

Of course, Kasparov was a much greater player and probably would have won easily - even if Short had won this first game with black.

Yes, this match WAS Short and no matter how many :highlights" u speak of for Short, he was destroyed, demolished, wiped out, slammed by Kasparov. You cant explain a score of 7-1 away, regardless of how much spin you put on it, but it seems all the British GMs and fans at that time AND now wont admit that Short was out classed in every single phase in that match...and Kasparov has owned Short since and always did. I had a book on that match by Dominic Larson and OMG he tried to spin and spin and spin ho wonderful Nigel was and how he was so hating Kasparov and was going to win..BUT that Game Keene speaks of the novelty in the 4.Qc2 variation WAS worked out by him and Kavelek.not by the Short camp ...so just a terrible attempt to make Short looked like 1/2 a match to Kasparov, he wasnt. Very sad and as said, to this day...people think Nigel ever had a chance...

Actually, Short earned himself a poor reputation amongst many British chess players, not least after his disgraceful obituary for Tony Miles (England's first GM).
