Kasparov seriously surprised Anand in game 11 with the Dragon Variation of the Sicilian Defense, diverting from his normal Najdorf Variation. Anand responded with the ultra-sharp Yugoslav Attack, however his kingside attack was stunted by Kasparov's pragmatic 12. ...h5. Kasparov's subsequent play in this game is extremely instructive because he demonstrates that even though the queens can be traded off, the attack against the opponent's king can still remain in full force. After a few defensive inaccuracies by Anand, Kasparov concluded his attack with the sparkling tactic 31. ...Rxc2 - forcing white's resignation.

    (continued....) Arbiter Carol Jarecki went to reset the clock....and she dropped it! It hit the board, bounced off the table, and down to the floor. Kasparov, who had had his game face on (fierce glares everywhere), turned his head and burst out laughing, Anand laughed, too. As Jarecki set the clocks, Kasparov quickly quashed his smile and put his game face back on. The rest of the story is in the video.

    A few things about this match. In the 9th game, after Kaspy played a6xb5, Kaspy quickly left the room, and Anand started smiling. You can see on the video; Anand brings both hands up to his mouth to cover it, and it took about five minutes before he face relaxed to the point where he brought his hands down. Also, before game 10, when Anand was supposed to start Kaspy's clock, Anand protested that the clocks hadn't been reset after game 10. (to be continued...)

    haha man that is a great story. Carol Jarecki is awesome, she was still running tournaments smoothly when I used to play scholastic events 10-15 years ago - really a classic person in american chess, awesome promoter/organizer/arbiter

    Do you define winning as completely ignoring the two threathening queen planes on f7 and g7 for 5 whole moves and thus getting his own two tower rooks completely demolished into oblivion, resulting in a complete and utter destructive checkmate. Bush got his ass beaten and checkmated so hard you can't imagine it.

  • @vuralmecbur9958

    @vuralmecbur9958

    No, I define winning as making millions of American believe that 9/11 was a terrorist attack. Bush made people believe that story, thus he won.

    Vural Mecbur well yeah, he cheated the spectators all right. but that doesn't change the fact that he got his ass beat, intentionally or not.
