It is not back translated from Russian, the song was know well before 1930s. My grandfather sang this song in Yiddish and knew it from his childhood (he was born in 1905). Leonid Utesov adapted many Yiddish songs replacing the original lyrics with Russian version which is some cases had very little in common with the original (unlike the Rebe Ellimelakh song).
