Ich bin a Bucher jîng în frailech, ich fil sech gît,
es bengt sech mir nuch Libe,
es bengt sech mir nuch Glik.
Ich vill gain in alle Gassn în vill schrain: Gewalt!
A Maidale git mir bald!
Wail ich bin a Bucher jîng în frisch,
´ch gai sech ous mamesz far a Kîsch,
tref iech mir a Lodze Ponienka,
sie red poilisch în ich mîss stenkn:
Ja sze kocham a ty ´spysz!
Schpiel, Zigainer of dain Fidl,
schpiel mir up a Liebesliedl,
falsch is sie vie alle Frouen.
the lyrics on english:
I'm a lad, young and happy,
I feel well
I've spirit for love, I aspire to be lucky
I'll go along all streets and
Shout: People, listen!
Give me a girl then.
Becouse I'm a young lad
I aspire to a kiss
I meet a girl from Lodz
She spoke polish and I had tol isten:
'Ja sze kocham a ty ´spysz!' (I love you, but you...) (I love you, but you sleep)

Play a lovesong with me:
I've lost my heart in Budapest
In the night in moonlight
I wanted to build a nest with her,
But she laughted about it
I thought, she should love me
Just me, and any other
I thought, I can't trust her,
She is false as all the womans!
In the corner, I'd let her go.
NOTE FROM CHRISTOPHOROS76:
"If „Ja cię kocham a ty śpisz!" would not be show In propper way -- just try to use this: Ja cie kocham a ty spisz!"
NOTE FROM JUREK46PINK:
"There is whole line in Polish language sung : "Ja cię kocham a ty śpisz !" /I love you and you fall asleep !/."

My stepfather was a Holocaust survivior from Budapest and he had a reording of this music for quite a few years... he loved to play it and do a little dance. Oh what a great memory. RIP...Daddy Laszlo!!
I love how the Yiddish, Roma and Hungarian tradition and heritage is mixed in this unique piece of music! This is how Central-Europe (should) look like!!

So sad to admit it's nothing more than history now. Several catastrophes of XX century destroyed the heart and identity of Eastern Europe. What we have now is nazi revival and it's a terrible reality.

Karsten Troyke is great!!! I`ve seen him live two or three times so far. Great voice and great performance! He is a very polite and likeable person and supported several russian singers to start a career in Germany.
Three of my Grandparents emigrated from Hungary, near Budapest, to the U.S. in the late 1890's and early 1900's. My Dad loved this kind of music, but I don't recall this song. Love it

Great song, I love it!!! The melody of the refrain "Ich hob gemaint...." reminds me of Zarah Leanders song "Nur nicht aus Liebe weinen". Panienka is polish and means just "little Fraulein".
Thank you for your comment. It is not I who misspelled BUDAPEST. This is the title of the yiddish song by singer Karsten Troyke. It must be the yiddish pronunciation of BUDAPEST. This song is well liked all over, especially in Europe. I will add BUDAPEST next to the title so people will know.

Sinan Saltykov It's a great song, but happiness and cheerfulness? It's about disappointed hope, unfaithfulness and embitterment.
I'm happyyou liked the video. Since this is supposed to be an old forgotten yiddish song, I imagined that Chagall must have been a young man at the time the song was written.

Maybe it is but done in Klezmer style. The Yiddish version is quite quite old though.
I asked the Yiddish Book Center for a literal word-for-word translation. They catered to my request, and here's what they gave me. I'm a lad, young and happy, I feel well; I yearn for love, I yearn for luck. I'll I go along all streets and shout: help! A maiden give me soon Because I'm a lad, young and fresh I’m really dying for a kiss Meet I a Lodz Polish girl She speaks Polish and I must grumble. Ja cie kocham a ty ´śpisz!' (I love you, but you sleep) Play, Gipsy, on your fiddle, Play me a love song, For I have lost my heart in Budapest In the night when the moon was shining. I have wanted with her to build a nest But she of me has made light I have thought she is in love with me She loves only me, and more no one I have thought I can trust her, False is she like all women by the toll house have I left her standing.
