Its a shame these guys don't get to make music a full time thing. Karnivool did more for the sound of prog than almost any band of the 00s and they remained criminally underrated. Sound awake is right up there with all the genre defining albums like Lateralus, 2112, Dark side of the moon, etc. I wish more people could see that

my exact thoughts! Sound Awake is definitely one of the greatest albums ever made. From top to bottom it was perfect!

Ian Kenny is also the front man of another very successful band in Australia called Birds Of Tokyo, which is more comercially successful than Karnivool. For Kenny, music IS a fulltime thing.

It's a great thing in my opinion. Do you know how many times I've listened to Fear Inoculum? It's not an album. It's an experience. And IMO Themata which was kind of in the back seat to Sound Awake and it makes me as a dumb American look at the full discography and it's like...holy shit! Assemetry took about two years after it came out before I realized how complex and beautiful it was. Aeons...the end of this song was so mundane but so f#cking good! That being said...Closure in Moscow is coming out with new music. So that will hopefully hold me over until new Karnivool. Aussie music right now is nuts.

Agree completely, Sound Awake ranks in the best Australian rock albums ever made. That’s aside from its progtatic ranking!
Saw em a few weeks back here in Luxembourg - they are fantastic artists - and their presence is just absolutely perfect - totally chill - very respectful towards their fans - it all just feels right. They are a beacon of hope amidst the mess of today's music...

He just said live on stage last week, "we love touring together because when we tour, we write". They just finished their Australian leg of their Tri Continental Tour so who knows - maybe after this we get an album
Karnivool have been my favourite band ever since I listened to Sound Awake in its entirety. My life’s mission is to see them live before dying.

I’ve been to a live music venue near my home at least 30 times to see bands play. Two of those time where Karnivool. Both those gigs where by far the most packed that music venue has ever been at any of the gigs I’ve been to! There live sounds is absolutely phenomenal and by far the best act I have ever seen live! I have seen more than a lot of live music and nothing will top there performance !

So fortunate to see them once in my lifetime. It was unreal.
Interviewer is extremely well prepared. Awesome questions! Just great
Asymmetry is an all-time favorite for me. So for how demanding the record must've been, I'm very grateful we got it.
God I wish they would make more music
It's nice to see them being more open and honest about where things are at with the band. I think in past interviews they've implied that they are hard at work on the new album, which I think is what has lead to fans having this unrealistic expectation that new music is coming any time soon. Knowing the reality that writing sessions are few and far between for them, it makes much more sense why we haven't seen an album in such a long time. Just gotta be patient and respect that their priorities have shifted.
So much talent in this band. The world is fortunate these guys found each other. Magic........
Karnivool is on my top 5 best bands ever. One of a kind band.
Really sad to hear that it didn't become a full time thing in that sense. Such a talented band that really could've fired up the music scene with their sound in the last 5 or so years, especially welcoming a new audience to join the ride. I fully understand why it was hard for all these years to sit down and pull together another album, I just wish the band was more open about it. I mean they went fully distant for many years with no real explanation or reason, I know that might sound a bit selfish but believe me I fully love this band, met a couple of the boys and seen them live about 7 times.

There was an interview awhile back I think its of hoss and he says something of "well management comes in and says hey why don't you write some music and we just tell em eh fuck off" jokingly of course, but hopefully the new album get to us this year.

The Aussie band Lucid Planet is also worth checking out, they have a tool tribal thing going on as well as a style similar to Karnivool and Tesseract. All amazing bands.

Swear ill die of old age before they release this new album.
They’re still quite underrated. Awesome band, great songs and a charismatic frontman 🙌🏼✨ I hope they continue creating new songs
One of my favorite bands. Honestly.. And I'm a Yank.. I wish they'd come to the States.
Love you Ken, but if vool had toured the US in 2013, believe me -- I'd have toured along with y'all. Much love though, I'm waiting and enjoying what's come so far and what's yet to come. Cheers, *Sound is the factor that holds it together.*

Huge props to being honest about the state of the next album. As a new fan, I'd love to see one released, but if it ain't there it ain't there. They seems to really have been enjoying touring over the last decade, which is really cool. I need to see them live someday.
so good, watched it with pleasure
Excellent interview! I miss them. I hope they'll finish a new record in this decade. 😅
A really great interview with Ian. New music, Ye we'll wait.. certainly one of the most amazing bands Ive ever had the privillage of expirencing. Exciting news theres new material on the way thou!
Great interview, Ian is cool!
Karnivool are honestly one of the best live sounding bands out there, I've managed to catch them every time they've come to the UK and they've blown everyone away every time! Great interview by the way, thanks for putting it out there!
I love this band with all of my heart, saw them 2 times

Come back to America! Man I hope these guys can release a new album soon. Soon in their timeline is like 2 years...
It's really hard to hear that there's still no new music on the horizon (certainly not that's "in the can"). I'd hoped that the Regeneration Tour would be to promote new material, but clearly not. It's such a shame it's a part time thing now as they are such a talented group of musicians. Their live performance I saw the other week just blew me away.

I'd say it's especially harder for them given the frontman is also in another more commercially successful band and everything that's gone on over the past few years with COVID and situations with individual band members.

I think he's making a correlation between the bands in the fact that their music puts you in a whole-ass mood. He ain't wrong, I love both of these bands for that reason.
I hope this doesn't come true... but they could not create a single new song and I would still buy every single ticket to their gigs when they come to town
Mahh boy Kenny did a hairtransplant i see #NoShame
"I think everyone has this assumption that Karnivool is full time working on this record." Nah, not really Ian. I gave up on them ever releasing another album several years ago. I'd love to be wrong, but it's clear they understand what their biggest priorities are and I completely respect that. It's bittersweet b/c I really wanted to hear what was next after Asymmetry, which I believe was their best album. Sound Awake was great but Asymmetry was bolder and more memorable. Aeons is their best individual song, full stop. I think I'll give it yet another spin today and pour one out for the two to three albums they might have been able to create under different circumstances. RIP Karnivool! ♥🤘
