I agree with you Chris. Although I think that Karen and Judith Durham ( The Seekers ) both had the best female voices even to this day. I’m 68 years old and when I married my wife in 1973, our wedding song was “ We’ve Only Just Begun “. There were so many wonderful female vocalists back then. I miss them but will never forget them or their song.

She recorded and released the song before the stage play, and it broke all of the rules for a song of this type. She was a virtual unknown by the mainstream, but the song rocketed to the top of worldwide charts in 1977. Therefore, it was an unknown song by an unknown singer from an unknown stage musical. The fact there was also no video clip means it should not have been a hit. It is worth a listen because Julie's version is hauntingly beautiful.

You were probably listening to a bunch of psychedelia and folk, Peter Paul and Mary, Bob Dylan, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Jefferson Airplane, Joni Mitchell, Judy Collins, Procol Harum. Did I hit any? A lot of guys eschew chick singers, but since you like Karen I'm guessing you might like Joni and Judy. I was just teasing you before, "Argentina" was never on the radio, so unless you were a Carpenters fan and had the album, yeah, you might have missed it. And it wasn't 1970, it was 1977s "Passage" album. By that time The Carpenters had lost their steam. Two lackluster albums (Now&Then, Horizon) had let the wind out of their sail, resulting in disappointing results for "A kind of hush," and it was over. "Passage" was an attempt to explore new territory but it also showed that Richard realized their radio days were over, even if he didn't admit it to himself. All that said, since you like Karen and you appear not to be a collector of their albums, I encourage you to listen in entirety to their two magical albums "Carpenters" and "A Song for You." Those are both blisteringly great albums.

Stop asking who is listening in 2019, 2020.....Karen Carpenter is timeless!

She is undeniably the best female vocalist EVER! I get chills listening to anything she sings.

Hard to compare between different styles of vocalists. But I would definitely put Karen Carpenter right up there with Aretha, Gladys Knight, Sandy Denny (of Fairport Convention), Dusty Springfield, Joni Mitchell, Annie Haslam (of Renaissance), etc. And on top of that, she was one heck of a drummer.

And I, at 87 years old, have fond memories of hearing Karen sing this song in Reno about the time the musical was first performed.

The purity of Karen Carpenter's voice, combined with the haunting lyrics make this a real masterpiece.

Its 2023 and I am still heart broken , but your music is still with us , you are here with us all .

I am blessed to have heard her voice since the late 70's. I am now 60 and she still has the voice of an angel and brings tears of joy.

Annette Sein, it was from the 1977 Carpenter's album "Passage". I think the reason why you probably never heard this version is because it wasn't widely released. It was on the B side of the "Calling Occupants of Interplanetary Craft" single.

Karen certainly had a beautiful voice, stunning. He said one of her versions of a Beatles' song was the best version. Some people think that Sarah Vaughan had the best non operatic voice in English speaking world last century. Tony Bennet for instance. But with greats like these two, both are wonderful.

Yes Royce, human feeling and emotion was something that came easy for Karen. I heard an interview of a man that was in the music industry and he had worked with the Carpenters in the studio when Karen was only sixteen years old. The interviewer asked him if the emotional presentation that Karen always conveyed was something that she developed over time. He emphatically said NO, she was born with it. It was not something she learned.

I wonder if Karen realizes how much we enjoy this, and all of her songs.

Her voice is simply out of this world...ethereal . A VOICE no one will ever be able to duplicate..

What a shame that someone who was so talented didn't see the incredibly talented woman that she was, impressive, admired, appreciated. For her to see herself as needing to eat less to have value is heartbreaking!

You are so right! So many people, including Helen Gurley Brown and the author of "The Fascinating Girl" push the garage that women MUST be thin in order to find love & be beautiful. If I had met either one, I would shove her face in a cake. And skinny people DO get sick, HGB!

Karen's mother was largely responsible for her lack of self-esteem and related insecurities. And when Karen eventually received public criticism about her physique/weight, it had an almost predictable affect on her self image. A very sad and difficult scenario. Thankfully, her incredible music lives on to inspire future generations.

I had no idea that Karen recorded this song. I love this song and thought I was aware of every song that she recorded. One of the best singers in the world. Such a great loss!! I grew up on the Carpenters and was so saddened by her passing.

I have heard many versions of this song, but this is the first to bring tears to a old man’s eyes. And that is saying much. Take a few minutes to enjoy such a great voice and historical song !!

She was reputed to have "perfect pitch"

I was shopping in the Safeway grocery in Jedda, Saudi Arabia when I first heard this version. I stopped to listen, and didn't move a bit until it was finished. Gone far too soon, Karen.

@Yvwic50 I understand why, and I'm not a Karen Carpenter fan. But song would stop me in my tracks, too. I'd pretend to decides between a can of tomato sauce, and a can of tomato puree -- for 6 minutes -- just not to look odd.

And the saddest thing is that she didn't think she was good enough... She couldn't have been more wrong... If anything she was too good for this mortal plane and the universe claimed her for its own...

She Does! ;-) She Sang Like a Real Angel when she was here...and Still Does, Where She is At ;-)

It is impossible to describe the heavenly sublime voice of Karen. Almost as if she was not of this earth, but on loan from God. Only he could have created an Angel like this.

One of the finest female voices of all time. What a sad loss of a beautiful person.

What a voice! A top 3 all time female singer by anyone's standard!

I I have listened to many versions of this song.....But, Karen's version is the best RIP Karen we miss you

I followed her singing from early 70s. It is a great shame how her obsession destroyed her and took her away from us - her brother was so broken . Thank Karen for the beautiful songs she left for us.

One must take into account what conditioned Karen to have the disorder from which she died. Indeed heartbreaking.

Karen Carpenter's voice was a divine instrument, ethereal and pure, capable of lifting the soul to heights beyond the physical realm. Her angelic melodies touched hearts and souls around the world, leaving a legacy of beauty and inspiration that will endure for generations to come.

Not over sung as it normally ends up, very pure expression from her crystal voice 👏💗

THIS! I love Elaine Paige, but this is supposed to be melancholy, not loud

She has the greatest voice, angelic and softness. She passed too young. She could have surpassed the 'greats' in her life. Loved her for the past 50 years.

Hats off to Karen Carpenter who died young at when she was only 32 yrs . RIP,

Im also a 71 year old man living alone for over 40 years becer smiked nor drank alcohol happy years still grafting 8 or 9 hrs a day as a gardener for good people in deffrent great locations so I'm too old to cry for the song but I did cry for the great singer concerning her early avoudable death. Oh what a voice.

Never heard her sing this before. A delight to the ears ❤

When she recorded this tune in the late '70s, Karen herself was beginning her battle with anorexia; yet amidst the odds she did a flawless, brilliant and powerful version of this song. Truly natural, with that unique brand of spontaneity as well as courage. And she captured those high notes perfectly 👏👏👏👏👏

she heard a few people make comments that she looked kind of heavy in her bob hope specials in 73. from this moment on..she decided she had to change and become "slender"

There are no really high notes in this. People just make a big deal out of the crescendos. Karen couldn't sign particularly high.

The amazing thing about her voice is that every note is friggin effortless.

Karen Carpenter is on a very short list as the greatest female singer of all time. After thinking about it, she is on a shortlist as the greatest singer that has ever been on this planet.

These are all a stretch, good voices for sure, but "best of all time", please.

I loved hearing Karen Carpenter's voice over the radio, especially Superstar. Her voice just draws you in and holds you close. RIP, Karen.

I’m 52 Karen had the best voice still no one comes close even now so clean and clear such a sad loss x

I am still & will remain brokenhearted to the end of my days to have lost her. I've performed her phenomenal songs for governors & a president. I only hope I did her talent justice. Much love & many blessings to you, also, Richard Carpenter 1/19/2022

How sad that she never knew how great her voice was....

Hearing Karen's voice is such a wonderful experience for me and for all. She had such a perfect voice. Her intonation, interpretation, timing and technique were outstanding. I truly cherish the times, in the seventies, when I was privileged to experience The Carpenter's projects. What an outstanding voice. I miss her.

Karen was the best female singer ever.... sure miss that girl....We've only just begun was the song we played leaving the church on my wedding day.....

This is THE version of this song. I have never heard anyone else come close. Her death was such a terrible loss.

Hey MaryAnn, now when you hear every other singer sing this song you will say the same thing that ive said and a multitude of others that have heard Julie sing it, she owns it like a boss!
