    It's funny even when he was really old his teammates would wait for his slow ass to get down the court they would give him the ball and just let him do his skyhook and he'd make it every time

    The skyhook shot really is next to impossible to block. I’m a 5’9, brawny 210 lbs, and played shooting guard in high school, our coach had everyone on the team learn and master the skyhook. I’m so glad he did, because we won two local titles thanks to it. He showed us just how effective it really is. Case in point, when I mastered the skyhook I could shoot it over coach, and he’s 6’6.

    The skyhook is incredibly hard to do. You dont think people have tried? Despite the benefit of being harder to defend, its not an easy shot because of the control/balance needed. This is why you still see jump hooks most commonly. Jumping off 2 feet offers significantly more stability and its just easier. See Hakeem's jump hook, it is deadly and just as graceful.

    The problem today is none of the big men today want to play in the post that's why there are no more dominant centers today. Centers back in the day controlled the paint, averaged double figures rebounding, blocked shots and dared you to come down the middle. Rudy G is the only big to today who tries to control the paint but he lacks offensive skills. Hakeem, Kareem, Shaquille, Patrick, Schmit, were some of the last traditional great big men in the game. These guys dominated the paint and the game and there teams were always in contention because of their play. There are no big men in today's game that have that kind of impact.

I guess that's why Kareem is often ledt out in the GOAT conversation. He dominated high school. College, too. In the NBA, he finished with 6 rings and 6 regular MVPs. We all habe our GOATS, Kareem is mine. ❤

    Since the day when the Up and Under moves became famous.. I don't see much hook shot.. I never see any post player that master it. It doesnt look so cool unlike up and under moves but shit if you master this shot no one can defend you.. it's like taking a full vertical jumpshot and the ball is from the back of your head.. If someone attempts to block you surely its going to be a foul or a hard contact..

    because this is a difficult shot. up and unders lead to layups/dunks... which a player of this size will make 80% of the time. Hakeem revolutionized post play, and that is the new person to emulate as a big man. Ironically enough, Hakeem also had a pretty deadly skyhook in his arsenal as well.

    +Steven Chao I guess it is old fashioned. His shot is what made me fall in love with Basketball and I was born in 1988 and didn't start following and playing competitive basketball until I was 22. After seeing countless videos on the skyhook and how to do it, you come to realize how difficult this move is to execute. Executing it with the finesse and that beautiful release that Kareem did is beyond hard. Big men these days do not have the foot work and ball handling to execute the skyhook. Big men are a whole different species, they pick up things very slowly and for some reason, cannot pick up the muscle memory like smaller players can. You see true post players use hookshots, because you never see them go for a skyhook.

    It's really kinda laughable that he even bothered faking to his right first (with his back to the basket) before delivering the unstoppable hook. I noticed several defenders actually bit on that little "mini"-fake right too. Caldwell Jones for one. Kareem didn't even really have a threat turning the other way. I do recall seeing him shoot a handful of lefty-hooks. Imagine if his left hook was as accurate and lethal as the right. He might have another 10,000 pts.

  • @BartholomewSmutz

    @BartholomewSmutz

    Actually Kareem was enough of a threat to his right to keep the defender honest. What he would do if you overplayed to his left to stop the Skyhook was to turn quickly to his right and go to the basket for an easy dunk or layup. Kareem was quite nimble on his feet unlike Artis Gilmore for example. I grew up watching Kareem and saw this move often.
