I sent this to my daughter who's playing for a D3 school in GA. She's having a hard freshmen year in the clasroom and on the court. Then I realized that's what I'm planning. I'm planning on life getting easier for myself in 2 years, but the reality is that it will probably get harder. So, I'm going to play the video again. This time for myself.

The Lord never said life would be easy on earth, it won't. We will all go through life's struggles, down days, up days. It was no easy for Him, it won't be easy for us. Never give up no matter what or how hard.

I awoke this morning and turned on my TV, which was on ESPN. A feature on Coach Lawson and this speech was already playing, and I watched the rest of it. It may not be possible to have such an important philosophy expressed in a more succinct way. I then watched the full video, and I encourage everyone to do the same. Thank you to Coach Lawson and to the person who thought to record and later to share her speech with everyone. I'm always going to root for you.

Coach Lawson's speech is excellent, but Yerushalmi's comment is ridiculous, "an entire college degree" from Duke? Really? Coach Lawson is going to teach the players more than their pre-med professors? You may be an anti-intellectual, however, Coach Lawson is obviously not. Coach Lawson is encouraging her players to embrace challenges, including their academics. Why can't you acknowledge the power of her speech without putting down Duke University? The "colleges are useless" trope is getting old. And she is 41, very nice of you to call that young, I agree with you there.

You have to show her how to though. The best way is with excersize, with sports, science fair, travel, all with good coaching and guidance for incremental wins. Get her to try new things where it's safe to fail. Just telling someone to "handle hard better" doesn't help them.

This was incredibly inspiring. I’ve just finished six months of chemo, and the consistent thing I e heard from friends, medical staff etc is how well I handled it. I did - because I knew I would be better at the end, and that crying and being a victim doesn’t solve the issue. I took care of myself when I felt sick - but always looked for the positive. I got a therapist to help through the hardest moments, because I knew I’d need some support. You can tackle what’s in front of you. I know you can. Be good to yourself, you’re worth it!

Pain and Struggle are the key parts of growth, but they do not need to include suffering. Many believe being uncomfortable is not right and hence wait until they are comfortable. Kara you hit the target, DON'T WAIT. Run towards the challenge (pain and struggle). Fun, joy, and gratitude come from focusing on what went well, often surrounded by pain and struggle. I love George Mumford's analogy of the hurricane. In the eye, the center of the hurricane, it is all calm, but outside the eye, the winds are howling.

But take one day at a time and the Good Lord everyday for His help in handling all you have! Loved this from Kara, gave me something to think about... even at 68 years old, it's not easy! Coach Kara Lawsons motivational speech is a wonderful lesson and it spoke to me. When you want to achieve your goals, it can’t be handed to you, but you learn how to surpass the hardship. You cannot learn what is handed to you. But to be better, you find the courage, the strength, and the integrity to surpass that hardship. When you want something, you will find a way to defeat it. It won’t be easy and that’s ok.
