Had goose bumps when Harsha was explaining his moments of being part of the 83. I was born in 81 so i was just 2 years to be old. When I was going through these many years of what is the key point to our world cup victory after listening to so many interviews from the mid of 90s is one the innings by Kapil Dev Nikhanj and the supporting roles played by blistering knock by Sandeep Patil against England, catches taken in the final by Gavaskar and who could forget that ball of the tournament by Balwinder and and and the catch taken by Kapil to dismiss Sri Issac Vivian Richards. I have read in a book written by Gavaskar about why Jimmy Amarnath is a skillful player, like Harsha said he was a top-notch batsman against the Windie's on their backyard in the beginning on 80s. He used to carry a red kerchief in his pocket and before going into the crease there was one song on a never-ending loop called Eye of the Tiger from Rocky. O that Port of Spain test match where India was chasing 400 runs was too good, i had a paper cutting album where in one of the pages i had an image of Gavaskar and Vishy standing on the boundary ropes balancing themselves after the test match. Sad in anger i threw away my collections. It is also sadful that i am unable to store in my memory any test match nor ODI post 2010 except few like the 2008 Chepauk Test Match where Sachin scores a 100 to win the Test Match chasing against England. VVS Laxman's heroics and few ODIs like the 2003 world cup and 2011 World Cup Final. Cricketers are used like Billboards even in Test Match. Back in those days in ODI there would be only one sponsor name on the Jersey and One tiny bit on a Test Match Jersey, now even in Test Match Jersey there are 2 + & not to be asked on a ODI where they are literally the billboard, it is only on the pants they do not have a sponsor logo. I started to get irritated watching the matches getting over in 3days. Test matches in India are not panning out at least 4 and half days.

My dad loved the last episode and he said back in those days, they never really know how gavaskar and few others looked as they never saw even the pictures of them. And there used to be a postmaster who got the pictures of Viv Richards, gavaskar and showed them. And then, there used to be one in their company with a transistor and he used to run around the office & give everyone the live commentary of the 83 world cup. Cricket was always an emotion here and understanding where it all began feels surreal. Thank you ash & Harsha for this series ❤

What an episode! I paused the video and read the article written by our "Cricket Viswaguru" Harsha on 4th June 1983. Simply loved his command over language and the way he mentioned about Cheeka/ Kalicharan and other names . It was so nice to see his mention about Kepler wessels who was lucky enough to play for both Aus and SA. What a prediction that time by Harsha even when our own players had a doubt as Cheeka always says that they went for Honeymoon to US. On the way stopover at England for WC. In that sense, Harsha was then and now a "Dheerkadarshi"

Ashwin, thank you for organizing this fantastic series with the Great Harsha Bhogle. I've been following the game since India's tour of Australia in 91/92. I literally fell in love with the channel 9 commentary team (Ian Chappel, Richie Benaud, Bill Lawrie, Tony Greig etc.). And similarly with our very Gavaskar too. But Harsha holds a special place. What a storyteller. As an example, the 22 yards call out during Sachin's farewell. This man is a genius and well done to you for asking some fantastic questions. 83 is indeed a special one. Also you keep referring to your father as much as I do. My dad is a cricket fanatic too! 😊

After watching the Sri Lankan collapse recently, the story of Kapil Paa Ji's legendary 175* starting at 14:12, is put into such better perspective. It's one thing to hear the story and it's something else altogether when you witness what 17/5 looks like and then realise how our legendary talisman rose up to the occasion in such a hopeless situation to eventually win us the World Cup. Watershed moment for not only Indian, but World Cricket.

The narrative of Harsha and sharp questions from ash is a treat to watch. Kind of taking a tour down memory lane. Goes to show, the BCCI members took the onus on them to get the cricket in big way along side with the emergence of the super stars of Indian Cricket. Wonderful, how Indian cricket went on to become so great in the world. Indian Cricket owe a lot to Kapil Dev and Sunil Gavaskar. Financial dominance is there, but that the way Australia and West Indies dominance we are not seeing it from them in the play. Ruthless winning is missing even now.

What a treat to watch and listen to the two of the greatest cricket brains ..I mean there are enough experts to talk Ash the champion bowler..to me Ash ' s greatest knock which never gets its due is the Sydney heroics with Hanuma Vihari.. it's etched in my memory till my last breath for sure . our pinnacle of achievement down under ..and that greatest leave outside the leg stump in Melbourne.. and trust me he will be one of the finest cricket analyst / commentator eventually once he hangs up .. for a contemporary player to follow so much of cricket all around the world .. don't know how he does it .. ❤

Just on Holding reference - In one of the commentary stints Sunil Gavaskar asked Micheal Holding in early 2000s "Mikey did you bowl the slower ball?" Holding in his typical base voice said - "Sunny I bowled all types of variations, but I bowled it fast"...

@Ashwin - This talk reminded me of the 1983 memories ... Our whole apartment folks watching on one color tv and seeing India win! Brought goosebumps listening to Harsha reminisce. Absolute joy listening to the master & padawan (of talk show) chatting 🙂

@Ashwin This series has become my all time favorite due to the very fact that you are talking to someone who watched, enjoyed grown up along with the cricketing eras. And the insights that he could share are just mind blowing to even think of. I mean we can speak so much about the recent legends like my great inspiration Sachin Tendulkar then the Fab 4 then to move to the great cricketers that we have seen through and seeing now that India is producing now. But without money, without fame and nothing more to add any celebrity status all that the legends who paved the stones for these paths were truly and only done it for their passion for the game of cricket. Lots of goosebumps moments and I love the way you articulate things, and with Harsha as you rightly mentioned he is the voice of Indian Cricket and I would like to add he is the brain of cricket history as well. If only the younger generation has the patience to listen through these conversations and understand where we come from. They wont be sitting and comparing people of different era for silly reasons. Love it, keep it coming and thank you.

Really outstanding and stimulating discussions in two episodes. A key omission in the discussion is that Gundappa Vishwanth who played a major role in shaping Indian batting during that era was not even mentioned by Harsha. Vishy scored 70 odd runs against WI in the 1979 World Cup, and was the only one by the then Indian standards to pursue a more attacking batting approach. Vishy also had a stellar home series against the WI in 74/75 including the storied 97 n.o. in Madras.
