Kanye focuses particularly on what he perceived to be limitations on taste, style and self-expression due to his background, something he sought to change with the release of his then-latest album, 808s & Heartbreak. Though receiving initial critical backlash due to Kanye's change of direction, 808s arguably wove in many more genres than modern rap had previously dared to, and the charts agreed: it became his 3rd #1 album in the US, going on to influence countless other R&B and rap artists.
Kanye's charmingly naive perspective on politics in relation to the world of pop-music rears its head at the end of the video, marking a stark contrast to his 2018 monologic rants, odes to Trump and chaotic tweets. Where did it all begin?

1:38 lmao man the reviews for 808s must have really killed his self esteem for him to be self deprecative like that. 808s & Heartbreak sounded like nothing in hip hop at the time, very forward thinking and simultaneously paying homage to 80s new wave and synthpop. To hear him say 'I'm glad someone else likes the album other than just me' is just so jarring considering how beloved the album is now and how many people it touched, really shows how different the reception was at the time.

I love tht ye came out and expressed himself for black kids tht had more appreciation for more styles of music then gangsta rap, which is cool but he made it cool to be different
People know MBDTF was made AFTER 808s right? Idk what’s with everyone saying he sucked from 808s? Plus, 808s is still an amazing album (and personally my favorite Kanye album) and legit that album is the reason why hip hop has changed and impacted so much after the 2000’s!

Yall dont understand. This era of Ye was very much needed. I can remember being around my friends dressing very preppy, business like with relax colors and cardigans, sweaters, and scarfs with messenger bags. Being a 🤓 a fan of music, the afternoon brunches, the calm night life with good music playing. My friend nick had this dope highrise apartment where we all meet and just kick it. Poem nights, open house talents. Now I am 30 its was such a beautiful time with this beautiful album
