Kansas City Chiefs Lin Elliott Game

Спорт

Chiefs we're the favorites in the divisional round on a frigid Janurary day. What happened? You have to see it to believe it.

    I hated Lin Elliot for years after that game. Having said that, it wasn't Elliot who lost that game. Both kickers were struggling in that weather. It was Steve Bone and his three INTs that lost that game.

    Bono was bad. But, at the same time, it's not like Lin Elliott was having to kick 50+ yard FGs. They were chip shots. Missing from 35, 39 and 43 yards. Come on. That's not good enough. I also think Rich Gannon should have been starting this game. He could actually move the offense. And Marty waited way too late before he finally put him in.

    I was all excited to watch this game live back in 1995. Had a vcr taping it but when the Chiefs lost I smashed the tape. Another opportunity lost. Little did I know at the time that it would be 50 years between winning Superbowl IV in 1970 until Superbowl LIV in 2020. Thankfully since Patrick Mahomes became quarterback the team is doing very well and won the last Superbowl.

    Elliott kicked for Dallas during their first championship year in 1992 but Jimmy Johnson let him go after two weeks in 1993. He said on FOX that he felt like Elliott was a disaster waiting to happen because he was so inconsistent and he couldn't take the chance that he might cost them a major game somewhere. Prophetic.

    It still baffles me at that last sequence before Lin missed his third kick. Why would Marty try a deep pass that has been proven to be ineffective throughout the entire game? It confuses me in a sense that they didn't try a short pass to the sideline on third down, or try a short run play with a spike on third down. After all, you have Marcus (freaking) Allen on your team. USE HIM!

  • @walterlv01

    @walterlv01

    9 ай бұрын

    Correct - you know your kicker can't make anything and yet you end up settling for an attempt several yards longer than the two he has already missed badly. I remember when they threw that deep ball on third down I figured that meant they had given up on the field goal kicker and were going for it on 4th down. Marty had to have been the only person in the stadium and the only person out of the millions watching the game on TV that actually thought he was going to make that last kick.

    I saw the name that must not be mentioned by any KC Chiefs fan. Not I have to go watch Mahomes highlights videos.

    Well, you know good old Marty Ball. The constant them is that the offensive play-calling was too safe. Hence, they get caught in these low-scoring games. Marcus should have got the ball a ton in this game. LT should have gotten the ball a ton when Marty was coaching the Chargers against the Patriots. Play your game. Don't play safe.

    @@pomerlain8924 Yes, it's true that Marty never learned to play your strengths. Even in 1985, up 21 -3 vs Miami in play it safe mode. Too timid to let Curtis Dickey relieve a worn out Byner. Browns trampled Miami for 250 rush yards, as it were. One extended drive in second half puts Miami on the ropes. Go for the coupe de grace. Instead, Byner is nicked ,halfway to the side line and gets waved back. Gets to huddle late, doesn't hear play and runs the wrong side of field, to allow Miami to begin their game winning drive. Marty flat out panics in postseason.
