Another example of this is Joe Cocker covering "with a little help from my friends" by The Beatles-check out the live video (one that has 12K views since there are several) where he brings it to a another whole level. It was once said "imitation is the highest form of flattery" Oh yeah!

This is a studio track overdubbed to a live performance, so some things don't line up perfect. The drums he plays aren't even audible here. Yes obviously they're still talented both live and in studio.

I forget sometimes what a masterpiece this was....what an era!!

I'm a 62yo drummer that played in bands since I was 16. Did some studio recording. Played with some pro's. (one of my buddies moved on and ended up in LA. His work is in movies and commercials. My point? Kansas is ane of the greatest, most professional, bands I've ever heard...and believe me, I've seen and heard a lot. Classy, outstanding music. I bow and tip my cap. If people only knew how difficult it is to put a band together. This was magic in that way. What an outstanding band, and song writing....

I feel like a combo of tech (all the auto-tuning/synthesized sounds instead of real instruments) & Capitalism (particularly having so few people writing all the 'big studio' songs using the same exact formula & being so unwilling to let artists experiment) makes that unlikely :( The industry has changed so much, & not for the better. (Note: I realize Capitalism has always been involved in the industry, but it's gotten so extreme in the last few decades).

I love how you did not pause the song as to not interrupt the momentum, the lyrics, and the instrumentals , so I definitely subscribed!. I went to all of these concerts live in the 70s and the talent is unbelievable!

Here’s a small list of great Kansas songs: Song For America (prog) Lonely Street (blues) Down the Road (road house rock) Icarus (prog rock) What’s On My Mind (radio friendly rock) Sparks of the Tempest (still relevant today) Dust In the Wind (their biggest hit) Hold On Crossfire Power There’s a ton more but these give a good spread of their sound.

Known it for over forty years and thankfully never seen that TV show!!

What you really see here is 2 lead singers, 2 lead guitar players, and when the main lead singer steps away from the keyboard, one of the guitarists steps over and plays the keyboard. It shows the skill and professionalism of groups back in the day. No back up players, you had to do it yourself and bring it to the stage.

He is totally right about one thing, that song is filled with hooks. It still holds up as a great example of mid 70’s arena rock and well crafted arrangements.

I saw Kansas live Feb 12, 1977 and the opening band for Kansas was Styx, if you can imagine. I still have the ticket stubs. Total admission with sales tax was $5.50. It is so gratifying to now see the younger generation doing reaction videos about music that I always believed was great and still do. Honestly, yours is the 10th reaction video I've seen to this song and it never gets old seeing the look in all of your eyes as you all discover something that was such a huge and important part of my life. So far, every one of you have loved this song. Keep up the good work.

I too saw both Kansas and Styx in concert in my teens. I don't think I ever saw them together. Must have been a great night.

Indeed man,seeing them on Masque,Leftoverture and Monolith tours ,living in Wichita ( 75-84 ) and was always monumental to me every time.They were my 2nd concert(Chicago for 75 for 3 hours!! 4 encores.) Only so many bands could ever reproduce faithfully on stage what they did in studio withut some assistance(solo recorded,tracks,etc.) and to do what they did.But without Kerry at it's very soul and heart of it as the single most influential person of the band.Mainly because lyrically he produced or co-wrote or helped shape I think, what they became as band, an image in a way, as his words produced images of a quest for truth, and meaning on a journey.He took us all with him,and what a trip it was.And the adding Walsh,Hope,Steinhart,and Ehart and Williams helped develop a band ,unlike any other in my humble opinion. Truly unique, standing out like a red rose in a wheatfield.My fave band in America.Peace man. p.s. When they did Lonely Wind that night(3rd song), from Lp ,it moved me so much,I went and found it next day- ( Masque was not out yet)and wasinstantly there again, as it was exactly like concert.Instant fan.They did entire 1st Lp starting off with in sequence every song.Some off SFA then launched into Icarus(BOWOS) and more. Instant fan.

The tambourine man is Robby Steinhardt, who is the band’s violinist and second lead vocalist. Check out his mad talent on Dust in the Wind, Miracles Out of Nowhere, and Cheyenne Anthem to name a few. We lost him just this year, far too early. R.I.P. Robby.

Dust in the Wind is my favorite Kansas song, brings back memories of a loved one who passed away too soon.

You need to see "the guy with the tambourine" when he picks up his violin. ;)

Seen them in concert in 77. Can't say it was the best only because I seen 4 Pink Floyd concerts. But then... this concert was even better than we thought it would be as Rick Wakeman showed up unannounced and began performing with them. Another night I well never forget! I hope... 🤠🐂🏞️🛩️

Wow, Wakeman,Walsh and Livgren and co.Quite a night eh? Far out.Haha.First time seeing them 75,my 2nd concert,they did entire forst album in sequence before going thru SFA and into Icarus from Masque lp before it came out.Awesome night.

I love your reactions. One of the unmentioned things about the old days,,, It was ALBUM ROCK. Some albums are so strongly composed, as groups of songs, that nearly every song is a jewel,and the entire album from. Beginning to end, is an experience like hearing a symphony. Left overture,is one of those albums.

I saw them in’82. Awesome band! The guy with long red hair plays violin also.

I just LOVE Your reaction - "Flabberdasted", right?! I saw Kansas Live in Stockholm Sweden and they were fantastic! The singer organist Steve Walsh was like a maniac on stage, doing gymnastics at his Hammond, singing his lungs out but sooo Good! What a showman and what a group of Musicians with a Capital M! You must also listen to their "A Song for America" - a genuine Composition, not just a Rock song ...

My first live concert was Kansas backed by Thin Lizzy. Simply amazing and the most poetic lyrics.

WHAT I REALLY APPRECIATE IS The structure of this song is so masterfully arranged; everything is just perfectly in place! actually if I had to pick as my f#1 favorite American album it would be surely this Leftoverturei it's so artful how they integrate the sound of violin into Rock music: I never get tired of listening to the album, hope you who read these lines feel the same: you're a real music lover, I solute you!

Their second biggest hit is 'Dust In The Wind.' Which almost wasn't. The guy who wrote it (same guy who wrote this song) said it was a case of 'listen to your wife.' He said his wife convinced him to write a song using what to him was just a practice drill he'd come up with. The result was the second biggest hit of their careers. The redhead with the 'mountain man' look plays the violin in that song. And here I thought Animal's instrument was the drums. (lol I can joke because my dad's a redhead)

Carry On Wayward Son was their first major hit. They were pros beforehand, but decidedly small time. There is a sort of mini-documentary on this song and the group in general you can watch here on youtube if you want to know more, its worth watching. The group says that they liked the song when their lead guitarist presented it on the last day of recording. It was the last song on the album because it was a last minute entry. The guitarist had written it *the night before.* They said that listening to the recording, they all somehow knew this song would change their lives.

I watched the whole song so excited for you to hear @5:00. So nasty. This video showed their talent. Love it!

In case ya can’t tell, I’m seeking out you videos…. The 70’s were the last era before electronics allowed one man to make all this sound…. It was the apex of true music.

@@shanegainer9640 Look it up and doubt no more. Most of what ended up on Boston's first album was Tom Scholz in his basement - he played all the instruments. Brad Delp eventually added vocals and Epic Records signed the 2 of them.

Star Wars was 10 years after Star Trek.😁 I can't tell you how many times I listened to this on vinyl. This is the definition of classic rock.

This also became the "unofficial" "official" theme for the SUPERNATURAL tv show.

Great reaction! Saw them several times back in the late seventies, early '80s. Talented musicians, many of whom are multitasking on various instruments and vocals!

Those of us that were in high school in the 70s this was our music. It came out every week every day a new song, a new band. None of us realized how absolutely talented. These musicians were now that all of us are in our 60s and 70s we realize music is nothing but garbage today 60s 70s and 80s music and then music died. I remember driving to high school at 16 years old and listening to this song and many others that y'all are listening to. We had no idea they telling these people hard because everyone had talent in that era unlike now.

This song was one of the good parts about Fear Street 1978. So glad I heard this song. It got me through my exams

Now do you know why it is one of the most iconic songs? Every time I hear it I am just as amazed as when it first came on the radio back in the day.

Incredibly enough - this was the LAST song added to he Leftoverture album the day they were suppose to wrap up the main production. The band, nor CBS records were convinced there was hit on the record and Don Kirschner had already sunk millions into the band over 5 years with not much return, but he saw the potential for super stardom and stuck with them despite the losses. At the 11th hour Kerry Livgren went to producer Jeff Glixman and asked for a few extra days as a he had a new idea for a song. Under pressure to keep to the schedule Glixman and CBS reluctantly agreed and Kerry went to work. He describes an inspirational process,(divine intervention maybe LOL?)he'd never experienced before in his entire professional life as "hook after hook" came to him while building the composition. Within a week, the body of the song, including the studio work, was complete, and the rest - is rock history. So many amazing gifts these talented musicians have left for all us the discover - thank you!!!

I actually saw John Elafante in concert this past weekend and it made the night seeing all the kids singing along to this song because they all knew it because it was the theme song for the show Supernatural.

Besides the amazing quality of Steve Walsh's voice, the lyrics of Kansas are powerful. And while Walsh claims that they were never meant to be "spiritual", you can't help but attribute something in the spiritual realm that inspired the words of most of their songs. I mean check out The Wall.... that is my fave.

Steve said that was his favorite or one of them too.Concidence? I think not.Yes Kerry was searching and took us with him.He found what he was looking for(Seeds of Change book).No other prog band or rock like them I think.The lyrics were almost rapturous. and mystical(a la Moody Blues?) On the Other Side, A Glimpse of Home,Angels Have Fallen,etc. So many Kerry's solo material is outstanding also I think. When Electricity Comes is one of them, Then Collector Sedition.Anyways,Peace.
