Kalle Grundel testing the Group B Peugeot 205 T16 ahead of the German Rally Championship.
Kalle was Chosen by Peugeot Talbot Sport to drive their all conquering 205 T16 in the 1985 German Rally Championship which he went onto win. Jean Todt impressed with his performance also gave him World Rally Championship drives in the more powerful 205 T16 evo 2 on the 1000 Lakes and RAC Rally's that year.

    Portuguese Rally Sintra stage finish control was at my door the famous snake like Turini that I went also to see Montecarlo! All the pure sound from Stratos Escort Alpine to the Groupe B era live in my brain! Thanks for being such an inspiration and for creating Amazing videos! All the best👍

    C'est super sympa de montrer les voitures du Groupe B comme les Lancia Rallye 037 et Delta S4 , Peugeot 205 Turbo16 , Audi Quattro Sport en introduction . Parmi les pilotes comme Markku Alèn , Bruno Saby , Henri Toivonen , Timo Salonen , Ari Vatanen , Walter Röhrl , Michèle Mouton , Hannu Mikkola , Stig Blomqvist , Attilio Bettega, Juha Kankkunen , Massimo Biasion il y a Kalle Grundel qui lui est un bon pilote mais il est surtout connu pour avoir piloté la 205T16 au championnat d'Allemagne et au championnat du monde contribuant ainsi au titre mondial de la firme sochalienne en 1985 et en revanche en 1986 il avait été recruté par Lancia comme mercenaire lors de la guerre Lancia Peugeot pour aider Markku Alèn dans sa lutte pour le titre pilote face à Kankkunen et pour le titre mondial des constructeurs avec la Lancia Delta S4 qui est une vraie machine de guerre dans un contexte très particulier où la politique prend le pas sur le sportif . Grundel et son compatriote suédois Mikael Ericsson ont tenter de remplacer un Henri Toivonen hyper talentueux disparu le 2 Mai 1986 alors que c'était lui le futur champion du monde 1986 .

    @@Marvdogger2 : I’d forgotten about the Groupe B Visa. It would be nice to see a video on some of the Groupe B rarities such as the Visa, the BX, RX7, Lada Riva etc.

    @@frazerguest2864 The only good amount of footage for the BX 4TC is Sweden since that’s the only rally it finished. The other two rally’s it contested, it retired so early there is barely nothing.

    @@Marvdogger2 : What about footage for the Visa, the Riva and the RX7? I’m trying to think what other oddball Groupe B cars there were? Porsche 959 would be an obvious choice, as would the Escort RS1700T, and didn’t Opel do a Groupe B Corsa / Nova, and I seem to remember Ford making a couple of prototype Mk1 Fiestas that were RWD with the RS1700T running gear in them? I can only guess that these were development mules of some kind. There’s quite a bit about the RS1700T project and other unusual Ford stuff in the excellent book ‘The Works Escorts’ by Graham Robson, who I had a bit of email correspondence a couple of years ago. If you want me to put you in touch with him I’d be happy to pass your details on, as he was heavily involved in the RS200 project and Ford SVO throughout the 1980’s.

    @@frazerguest2864 Mazda RX7 has a little footage since it did a few RACs, Acropolis rallys and the Swedish in 85. Graham has just done an new book on the RS200 with lots of great photos in.

    Wasn’t he a bit of a journeyman Kalle Grundell? I remember him being a ‘works’ signing for Ford with the RS200, then doing a few stints for Austin Rover with the 6R4 at the 1000 Lakes, but I didn’t realise he was at Peugeot as well. I wonder whatever happened to Kalle Grundell. He just seemed to disappear after the end of 1987.

    He started with a Group A Golf in 83 and 84 and then moved to Peugeot for 85 and then got a works drive with Ford for 1986. A third place in Sweden that year in the RS200 got him an A driver seeding for 1987. After Corsica Ford cut back its rally program which left him with time and Lancia came calling for him to drive the Delta S4 on the 1000 lakes as they wanted to score maximum points towards the manufactures title while his Ford team mate Stig Blomqvist drove a 205 T16 on the event. His next outing would be in the RS200s final rally the RAC in November. I think he stayed with Ford for 1987 and ind Iam not sure after that without looking it up.

    @@Marvdogger2 : Thanks Marv. I didn’t know that about Blomqviest moonlighting for Peugeot. Thanks for correcting me about Kalle Grundell’s appearance in Finland driving for Lancia. I was thinking about Harri Toivonen driving the 6R4 there. Kind regards from Sheffield, England.

    @@frazerguest2864 Another thing not many know is that Lancia called up Rohrl to drive the Delta S4 on the Sanremo in 1986 but he was enjoying his time off too much and kindly declined.
