Kalevala - Finland's National Epic Explained

#kalevala #finnishmythology
Kalevala is Finland’s national epic. Compiled by Elias Lönnrot in the 1800s, it consists of epic poems of creation, magic, lust, vengeance and death. A story of the sons of Kaleva, the forefather of Finns, it takes the reader to a mythical ancient land filled with monsters and magic, and even to the realm of the dead.
This animated documentary, narrated by Reidar Wasenius ( / reidarwasenius , introduces the epic and why it was written. In the coming months, we will cover the story of Kalevala on this channel. Stay tuned!

    I adore the Kalevala! I read all of JRR Tolkien when I was in high school (40 years ago), and when I learned how Kalevala inspired him I just had to read it myself. Found the Crawford translation at my local library, and ended up loving it! Favorite characters? Hard to say. Lemminkainen of course is a lot of fun, but I think I admire Ilmarinen the most. I am a craftsman myself (though not quite so good as him, I haven't figured out how to make a Sampo. . . "

    There has even been a comic made inspired by it, by Disney drawer Don Rosa, in effect Donald Duck & co. going to the land of Kalevala. The comic was at once translated to Finnish and received local astonishment for an American of absolutely not Finn background who knew this epic. A year or so later mr. Rosa found himself in Finland. He had no idea what awaited him - airport staff must have revealed because soon everyone knew that Don Rosa who had made a comic resume of the work for an American audience was in the land... He was invited to comic conventions, literature festivals and to top it all, to an audience with the president of Finland...

    Compiled and, in places, written by ol' Elias. It suddenly struck me that what you said about the going and return of Väinämöinen is what legend says about King Arthur. (Sorry about the redundancy of that first sentence but I was typing while listening. Had I just listened to it all and THEN typed, that useless line wouldn't be there.) Truly trivial: I inherited a lovely hardcover copy of the Kalevala (printed in simple two colour type and safe inside a leather slipcover) published in 1947.

    @@Anttimation In same sense as there are arch types for heroes and such - or that a hero-story has a certain structure about it. It seems to be some kind of a wishful addition to a story for those who find the old times a lot more interesting for being mysterious and magical per say. True heroes have to always return or the story will not end well.

    @@Anttimation I think that first off you would have to find out whether the two myths were contemporaneous or not. I would guess that they weren't so, an attempt to find out when the two stories were "born" would have to be made. If there's any overlap at all, then you would look for the ways in which the two sets of people might have interacted. If no point or points of contact, direct or indirect, can be established, then you might as well have a sauna, a barbecue and beer while you think up something else to research.

  • @Aurinkohirvi

    I don't recall why Arthur said he leaves. But there's a big difference with Arthur and Väinämöinen. Väinämöinen is a god in folklore, although Kalevala made him an ur-hero. Wikipedia says he was the master of lightnings and fire in folklore, the highest of gods, which certainly hints to prime god Ukko-Ilmarinen. Agricola says Väinämöinen was the god of hämäläiset tribe (Tavastians). And he is known from the creation of world runos where he is the son of goddess Ilmatar. As Ilmarinen is found with his own name in runos, its possible Väinämöinen is Ukko: so both are the same, the Bronze Age and the Iron Age versions of the prime god. And it's the folklore that has this runo of Väinämöinen leaving, angry and sour because his ways are judged wrong by the son of Marjatta (Mary). When leaving he boasts that he will be back when heroic deeds are needed and the universe stops working.

  • @ThisTrainIsLost

    @ThisTrainIsLost

    @@Aurinkohirvi Good King Arthur didn't leave so much as he was taken away by rather supernatural women (probably related to the Lady of the Lake, who once again became the custodian of Excalibur) after he passed away in his victorious battle against his (magically inbred) son. You know that magic was involved because it is said that, though Arthur died in his final battle, he must have been in some state in between life and death because the mysterious women took Arthur away by boat to the mystical isle of Avalon from which Arthur will return when his land is once more in such peril that only Arthur's return can save the day. It was that going and returning that made the connection in my mind between Arthur & Väinämöinen.

The runes originate both within the borders of modern day Finland and Karelia's Finnish and Russian sides (and some maybe further?).
