Zauq-o-Shauq - ذوق و شوق
Ecstasy

دریغ آمدم ز ان ہمہ بوستان
تہی دست رفتن سوئے دوستان
I could not go to my friends empty-handed
From an orchard!

قلب و نظر کی زندگی دشت میں صبح کا سماں
چشمہَ آفتاب سے نور کی ندیاں رواں
Life to passion and ecstasy-sunrise in the desert:
Luminous brooks are flowing from the fountain of the rising sun
حُسنِ ازل کی ہے نمود، چاک ہے پردہَ وجود
دل کے لیے ہزار سُود، ایک نگاہ کا زیاں
The veil of being is torn, Eternal Beauty reveals itself:
The eye is dazzled but the soul is richly endowed.
سُرخ و کبود بدلیاں چھوڑ گیا سحابِ شب
کوہِ اصنم کو دے گیا رنگ برنگ طیلساں
The heavy night cloud has left behind its red and blue cloud lets:
It has given a head‐dress of various hues to the Mount Idam to wear.
گرد سے پاک ہے ہوا، برگِ نخیل دھل گئے
ریگِ نواحِ کاظمہ نرم ہے مثل پرنیاں
Air is clean of dust particles; leaves of datepalms have been washed;
The sand around Kazimah is soft like velvet.
آگ بجھی ہوئی ادھر، ٹوٹی ہوئی طناب ادھر
کیا خبر اس مقام سے گذرے ہیں کتنے کارواں
The remains of burnt‐out fire are observable here and a piece of tent‐rope there:
Who knows how many caravans have passed through this tract.
آئی صدائے جبرئیل تیرا مقام ہے یہی
اہلِ فراق کے لیے عیشِ دوام ہے یہی
I heard the angel Gabriel saying to me: This indeed is your station-
This is the everlasting comfort for those acquainted with the pleasure of separation.
کس سے کہوں کہ زہر ہے میرے لیے مئے حیات
کہنہ ہے بزمِ کائنات، تازہ ہیں میرے واردات
To whom should I say that the wine of life is poison to me:
I have new experiences while the universe is decadent entire.
کیا نہیں اور غزنوی کارگہِ حیات میں
بیٹھے ہیں کب سے منتظر اہلِ حرم کے سومنات
Is there not another Ghaznavi in the factory of Life?-
The Somnaths of the People of the Harem have been awaiting a blow for long.
ذکرِ عرب کے سوز میں ، فکرِ عجم کے ساز میں
نے عربی مشاہدات، نے عجمی تخیلات
The Arabian fervor and the Persian comfort
Have both lost the Arabian acuteness and the Persian imagination.
قافلہَ حجاز میں ایک حسین بھی نہیں
گرچہ ہے تاب دار ابھی گیسوئے دجلہ و فرات
The Caravan of Hijaz has not another Husain amongst it-
Although the tresses of the Tigris and the Euphrates are still as bright as ever.
عقل و دل و نگاہ کا مرشدِ اولیں ہے عشق
عشق نہ ہو تو شرع و دیں بتکدہَ تصورات
Intellect, heart and vision, all must take their first lessons from Love-
Religion and the religious law breed idols of illusion if there is no Love.
صدقِ خلیل بھی ہے عشق، صبرِ حسین بھی ہے عشق
معرکہَ وجود میں بدر و حنین بھی ہے عشق
The truthfulness of Abraham is but a form of Love, and so is the patience of Husain-
And so are Badr and Hunayn in the battle of existence.
