Fela Anikulapo Kuti was a Nigerian musician and political activist who was born on October 15, 1938, and passed away on August 2, 1997. He is often regarded as the pioneer of Afrobeat music, a genre that combines traditional African rhythms, jazz, funk, and high-energy percussion. Fela's music was known for its socially conscious lyrics, addressing issues such as government corruption, human rights, and social justice.
Fela was not only a musician but also a fearless political activist. He used his music as a platform to criticize the Nigerian government and advocate for the rights of the oppressed. His songs, such as "Zombie" and "Sorrow, Tears, and Blood," were scathing critiques of the military regime in Nigeria during his time.
In addition to his music and activism, Fela was known for his eccentric lifestyle. He often wore colorful clothing, smoked marijuana openly, and lived in a commune known as the Kalakuta Republic, which was a sanctuary for artists and activists. Despite facing numerous arrests and harassment by the authorities, Fela remained a symbol of resistance and cultural icon in Nigeria and beyond.
