Give the review on Amazon a 'helpful' if you liked it.
Prices seem to fluctuate on Amazon UK so shop around if it is over £20.
Fox Vibrax Spinners (Ebay UK): ebay.us/H24g7W
I bought my Ka-Bar Backpack Kaster on offer from 'Amazon Global Shipping' in 2019 but I haven't seen them on offer since. I would usually post an Ebay link but there doesn't seem to be any available there in the UK.
The Ka-Bar Backpack Kaster is truly the best way to pack a fishing kit into a backpack or even a pocket - I love it and it is an invaluable part of all my various day / bug out packs.
Basically if you're building a bug out / survival pack you need one of these.

    I'm glad you found it useful. This is definitely my preferred 'hobo fishing' type of hand line to use. Although the new (more compact) Exotac Xreel is more compact it is more difficult to wind the line back onto so as far as ease of use goes I would choose the Ka-Bar Kaster every time - I love using it on my own pond and the local river.

    I made my first hobo reel with a dowel and a tin can and it came out _super_ and feels really nice in my hand. I'm currently designing my second one. Haven't had a chance to try it out yet because there is _no_ fishing tackle to be had here in Citrusdal. The tin can holds _loads_ of stuff. Great fun!

  • @MDM1992

    @MDM1992

    It's not naughty naughty as you put it, nowhere in law does it state that hand reels are illegal, and the environmental agency declaring that they only accept rod and reel doesn't change the law, and at the end of the day, if it's not specifically illegal, then it's technically legal. Far too many people take the word of people who don't create or in most cases even know the law, and their own opinions and self regulate. I read the publicly accessable legislation and go from there, and nowhere in the legislation does it say hand reels are an offence. We're already absurdly over regulated as it is without people deciding to regulate themselves even further. I for one feel we should push back against most of the petty and flawed laws in the UK to have them removed. Every year it gets worse and worse and 90% of police officers don't even know the law or twist and omit parts of the law to gain them an arrest where no law has been broken. We let far too much slide.

    Yes, my cats show up in the background of many pf my videos. On the subject of this hand line it is genuinely excellent. Although the last video I put out was on the equally excellent Exotac Xreel the Ka-Bar is definitely easier to wind the line back onto. I've been comparing both with a variety of lures and fishing situations and even though the Xreel will fit into a smaller space the Ka-Bar is easier to use and holds more gear so I'd give it the edge.

  • @pondguru

    @pondguru

    3 жыл бұрын

    Yes, it is apparently illegal to fish with anything other than rod and line in freshwater in the UK but no rules for the sea. However, in a bug out situation there are no rules - it is either break the man-made 'law' or starve and you need to practice with all means of gathering food to get proficient. I love these handlines and have recently got some small (3/4") bobber type floats which clip onto the line - they are way better than standard stick floats as they take up less room in the hollow handle and can be added or removed in a couple of seconds. This is where I got mine: www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Bobber-Fishing-Float-Snap-on-Fishing-Tackle-Ball-Sea-Fishing-Floats-Buoy-Floats/322129227041?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&var=512451403110&_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649 and it is the 0.75 inch ones - the 0.5 inch are a bit small for anything larger than a maggot as bait.

I made myself a hobo handline following Blackie Thomas and I can't wait to get out and test it but matters around my caravan are keeping me busy right now. Fortunately all the places I want to try fishing are on my friend's husband's land because if I get caught with no licence fishing with this thing in a public river it's about a R2M fine and 5 years in jail. Which I find hilarious because last year after I got mugged by a guy with a bottle AND he got arrested 5 minutes later with statements and evidence left right and center, they STILL didn't bring the guy to court and that was a year ago. A UK fishing license for freshwater fishing covers you for using a rod and reel to fish for any freshwater fish but a permit may still be needed in addition to the license. Fishing with anything else is classed as being 'illegal' in freshwater in the UK. However, in a survival situation any method (legal or illegal) is going to catch you a meal and law goes out the window when bellies are empty. That is why I practice catch and release with all manner of 'bushcraft' fishing methods, target shooting with archery (it is illegal to hunt with a bow in UK) and familiarize myself with new types of traps whenever I can. For saltwater fishing there aren't any sort of crazy laws about what you can use so hand lines are fine. If you're going to practice bushcraft methods anywhere it is best to do it on private land (with permission) where there is much less chance of do-gooders with no idea about survival / bushcraft snitching on you.

  • @ThousandYardStare

    I don't know the answer to that unfortunately since using hand lines in saltwater or tidal stretches is acceptable (in the eyes of the 'law'). I realized that was a bit of a sweeping statement when I said it but some of the thick nylon I see makes me laugh when I see tiny Crappies or Bluegills being landed on lines more suited to deep sea fishing. I'd much rather go for a lighter set up but that's the beauty of having to make up our own kits - everything is scaled based on the potential catch and I'm sure that having the option to land an alligator on a hobo handline is important to some, lol

    Love your reviews, they show you actually USING the gear… if I see one more dude do an unboxing and talk about the box and other irrelevant stuff it will be too soon lol. 😆

    Unboxing videos do my head in and I won't do them - it's always better to show something in action even if it doesn't catch fish on that occasion. The Ka-Bar Kaster is definitely my go-to if I need a hand line so I would recommend it 100%

    I got both of mine from Amazon US! Wonderful item! The storage space in the handle is really out there! I have three bright long bobbers, five size six hooks, and twenty 3/0 size sinkers in my second one. And there's still alot more room for swivels, pre set line ends, and in the cap, I can stuff plastic baggies of swim lures and spoons! I carry it with a slingshot for the land bound game!!! Excellent combo if you know how to hunt and fish!!!! Any meat is a blessing, especially if you find a good amount of plants to add to the pot or make a salad with! I just need to learn how to make wild fruit juice vinegars so I can mix them with seasoned rendered fats for salad dressings!!!

    I wish you all the best on your journey as there is a nation of stuff to learn. I'm going through the same exciting journey. With regard to floats I now use these in all my bushcraft kits as they are so compact and effective: E-Z Trout Floats (Amazon): geni.us/U7xkguZ They're probably not so good for heavier set ups as used by many in the US but for the lighter gear which tends to be used for UK freshwater fishing. My line is generally only 6lb as it's rare to catch wild Trout over 2lb locally (and there's nothing much else but Trout in my local river, lol) Happy fishing.
