As a composer, Rydman is self-taught. In his concert music, he has combined various ingredients from avant-garde to neo-modernism. Rydman is known to the general public especially for his songs, in which he has tried to break down the boundaries between art and entertainment. Rydman has written orchestral and chamber music (including two symphonies and six string quartets), a miniature opera, dance plays, choral compositions and song suites.
