If they weren't unionized, you would have a higher standard of officiating. MLB hitters lose their roster spot and their job if they don't know the strike zone. Do umpires have that same incentive? Or is there an organization that specifically exists to insulate them from poor work performance? Hire and train non union umps, increase their pay (to get more applicants), and make it easier to get fired (increasing opportunities for new umps). Also require them to do post game interviews like managers are made to do. It's all about fixing the incentives. What reason do umps have to train and perform at the same level as top players if their union will shield them from consequences of their poor officiating?

Bryce saw him, took his hand and walked him back to his family then took a pic wtih the boy and his brothers. How sweet is that? He didn't have to do that. Could have called a security guard over to escort the boy back but did it himself. I'd love to know what the brothers were thinking when they saw Bryce Harper bringing their little brother to them.

The union represents all its members as strongly as possible. That's the union's job. Being a tenured union member does NOT mean you can never be fired. It just means there's a process. MLB is afraid to utilize that process because Hernandez has proven he not only WILL sue but he will pull the race card. MLB is to blame because they are too cowardly to do what they need to do. They've decided to just wait until he retires rather than risk bad PR.

To put the bigger size of bases in perspective, if 1st base is 2" closer to second and 2nd base is 2" closer to first then... * the 40/70 means that Acuna had to run 23 feet less to steal 70 bases ((70 bases x 4")/12 inches per foot) * 3000 stolen bases means runners had to run 1000 feet less to steal a 1000 bases ((3000 bases x 4")/12 inches per foot)

  • @chrissanborn1678

I don’t have an issue with much said here, but I will say it’s straight denial to say Acuña would have a 40/70 season with the smaller bases. The larger bases this year helped a lot, he had 29 last year, he’s at 72 now, in 2019 (the year he played the most games) he had 37 stolen bases… you can’t say 72 steals has nothing to do with bigger bases

I hate the new rules. It's not fair to other players that played before them with the bases when their numbers are compared and I personally liked the fact that a pitcher could throw over as many times as they wanted. We're missing out on pitchers and batters being able to use all their tools. Taking forever to throw to mess with a hitter and then the hitter calling time out to reset or the hitter calling time out to mess with the pitcher was a part of the game.

Two things people need consider when doing the easy thing and piling on Angel Hernandez: 1. The current MLB check-swing rule is broken and 100% subjective. It is a strike if "“a pitch that is struck at by the batter and is missed.” What most people think the rule (he went half way, the bat crossed the front of the plate, he "broke" is wrists) are not actually part of the rule, although different umpires may use one of those standards when making this subjective call. 2. There are certain things all players know will lead to an automatic ejection and walking up the baseline to argue a call on a check swing is near the top of that list. Whether the umpire is right or wrong with their call has no impact on the decision to eject. Hate on Angel all you want (I do too, it is fun and the majority of umpires would have called that play a no-swing) but the MLB rules committee and Harper are as much to blame for this as Angel is.
