Basic Sprint Workout, Timer not required
First round just jog, then on each subsequent round sprint each distance, walk back, then immediately go to the next one when you get back to the starting point.
10m 20m 30m 40m 50m 60m 70m 80m 90m 100m
If you can't measure distance, it doesn't really matter. Put a marker down every 20 steps, that's close enough.
Do 3 rounds at first, then after a couple weeks four, then five.

Living in a high crime country, I can tell you that running has saved me from getting mugged at least 5 times. The times I have been mugged, I've been with people who can't run (i.e. girlfriend, daughter) or in a bus. Muggers have never chased me, not once. Lazy? Don't want to attract extra attention? That's anyone's guess. Im fit, but I don't run or train daily. I've been training BJJ for years, but if I'm being mugged or I'm about to (awareness is king), I'll choose making a dash towards safety over attempting to disarm or disable my attacker or attackers almost any day of the week.

Some additional points to consider: -an average untrained person is probably much better at running than they are at fighting, or rather they suck less at running than they suck at fighting -even if you're confident that you will win the fight, you are still likely to suffer some damage, whereas if you can manage to run away than you are likely not going to be hurt at all -running might move the fight to an advantages location, eg where there are more people around who could help you etc -if you get tired and stop running and the attacker catches up to you, chances are he will be tired as well, so it's not such a bad situation for you, and if your attacker has enough stamina to chase after you 'till you can't run anymore and then is still in a good shape for a fight, then the gap in physical abilities between you is probably so big that he would kick your ass anyway -beating someone up, even in selfdefense, comes with some legal risks, whereas running away doesn't -in some cases it might not be clear how the fight will really go down, maybe that guy you're about to fight has friends coming over, or he might suddenly pull out a knife, so in those circumstances it might be better to just get out of there on don't risk the situation getting more dangerous -for some people it is simply difficult to bring themselves to hurt another person, so instead of fighting their instincts as well as their opponent, it might be easier and perhaps safer for them to just run, because if they're going to hesitate in a fight, they will very likely lose -for people who do train a lot, but no combat sports/martial arts, it might be easy to outrun an avarage attacker, so why should they bother getting in a fight -if your avarge attacker is a kind of person who regularly gets in fights, then he might actually have an advantage of experience and also advantage of being more agressive, while not neceserily having great stamina, so and avarage person is more likely to outrun such attacker rather then win a fight against him -this I think is the most important point here: often you might be able to spot your attacker before he has a chance to get close (especially if you train your awareness), so if you decide to run away he has some more distance to catch up to you, making it easier to outrun him

Long distance running is not a good way to train. If you don't compete in long distance running then you should not do it. It promotes muscle loss. As you get older that becomes a real problem. Swimming (underwater breath-holding), Biking - long, steady distance, some kind of sport such as tennis or handball where it's easier to get partners, and of course everyone should learn filipino martial arts (weapons and stick sparring). Running probably kept me alive when I was growing up. The benefit of it is it allows you to pick your battles. I grew up in a neighbourhood with heavy racial conflict and gangs, where knife-fights and curb-stompings were the norm. I ended up becoming a sprinter. I've never been caught. As an adult I was once jumped by a group of guys. Two of them blindsided me and immediately chicken-winged both of my arms. I managed to get them close enough together that I could pop one punch into the one guy's ribs, and then I immediately started running with the bigger guy still trying to hold on to me. He nearly stumbled trying to do it and had to let me go, and I ran straight out into the road and down the block. That last one was probably going to be really bad, and there was likely no way I would have fought off five guys after getting sucker-punched from out of sight twice and held like that. Definitely I think the stakes of growing up where I did motivated me to become a faster runner and a stronger fighter. I'm no slouch when it comes to defending myself, either, but I definitely am under no aggrandized impression of my abilities to think I can fight off anybody. The ones I can't outfight I can likely outrun, though.

if you are weak or small or a woman or facing multiple attackers then at least running you have a chance. May be a small chance, but small is better than none. There is a good chance the attacker will not be motivated enough to pursue, running is much more taxing than hitting a small person. Running you have a chance to find help, to hide. Criminals don't like hard work. They are probably going to be fairly young, and fairly strong, but not conditioned, and will not have the will, the determination, that the person getting attacked will have. One will be fighting to survive, one will be attacking because they want something. Two disparate psychological states, one will give up before the other. Great video, great points made, but even if you're not a strong runner, running may be your only option

Good point. There are two ways to look at 'running'. One as a strategy, the other as part of your combat base. For the longest time, I concentrated just on gym work and sparring. Then I took two years off and pretended to be a runner. It was a joyous time. You get runner's high, you can just 'go' forever, and it gives you the mental drive to do your other sports and activities. So I think H2Hurt is saying 'running' is not the best, first goto strategy for self-defense, which is worth considering. I always tried to find the things that I was not that good at as a way of filling holes in my game. I was great at sparring, lifting, swimming, biking but not good at running. Two years invested in running and I was a decent middle-of-the-pack jogger in 10K fun runs. I never thought I could do that!

This guys an idiot. Promoting the idea of a smaller person (or any person for that matter) fighting their attacker rather than trying to run away when they don't even know if they have a knife or other weapon? Are you kidding? Plus, he's greatly underestimating the power of adrenaline and the physical fitness of the victim. A lot of times you ARE able to run away from someone way bigger than you. Your chances of getting away because they are slow or unmotivated to chase you down are way higher than your chances of walking away from a fight. And that's not even taking into account that the person you're running away from might be drunk. Seriously, some of this guy's videos are fine but this was just some utter bullshit.

There are 3 advantages to running that you have not addressed. First it allows you to change the environment where the engagement will occur (to one that suits you better). Second it should throw off his game (even if just by a little) You know what is going to happen in the next 5 seconds, he doesn't. Third and most important, running gives you a leg up in court later. If things get REALLY nasty (like taking out one or both of his eyes), you can tell the Judge and Jury 'I tried Sooooo hard to avoid this. I ran but he caught me'.

Another HUGE advantage, written down by a great commander in the art of war, is that they're not going to move at the same speed if there's a group so if you run you can engage with less people at a time and switch back and forth between fighting and catching your breath and running to keep the slower enemies farther away. I used to do this plus some extra stuff to my neighbors when there's 5 of them and one of me, I could run and take one or two at a time for a minute or so, catch my breath, and then run over and over again until I won or they got tired, which I didn't let them get away with I would just circle back in front of them and fight them once they're already gassed out cause 5 exhausted assholes can't take 1 warmed up, trained person at all. They all wrestled, I took kyokushin karate. Make them chase you uphill or into the sun or into some mud, make it hard as possible on them and easy as possible for yourself by running into better areas. Run into a crowd of people and most the time they'll stop trying to rob you. Do what my buddy did once and run through a fuckin ostrich farm, those dudes got messed up by those mean ass birds lol he made it though cause he went first

When i'm with my loved ones, in places I think bad things can happen AKA: "night clubs, bars, large events with lots of drunk people, places with lots of people, at night going to the car etc." I explain to them, before we even get ready to go, and just in conversations over time from knowing them. That if something bad happens, and a combat situation happens, you need to listen to me, very carefully. Don't try to help if i'm being attacked, you're not trained you'll just get in the way. If I yell at you to run, do not argue with me, and run, run for help, or to a more populated area. I don't care what is going on, the plan is for you to run, if there are kids, explain to them, to run. The most dangerous thing in situations, when you are with others is their lack of training will get you and them hurt. And the best defense you have is, awareness of situations, and your training. 85% of people that get attacked have no idea a situation is dangerous until it's too late, because they aren't trained to think that everywhere you go, dangerous things can happen to you by others.

As soon as they stopped the car, I pulled out my knife and ran straight at them, they then quickly drove about 20 metres down the road and stopped again, probably expecting me to continue chasing them. I then used that space and time to run off in the opposite direction around the corner and quickly went home. Obviously this was an extreme example, but yeah... Run Fu is legit. 1) If you ARE physically more fit than the attacker 2) likely to outrun them 3) have a clear exit with no obstructions then running is a viable choice. Running isn't the last resort. Actually having to fight is. In that sense, the best self defense training is probably sprint and endurance running.

I can run very well and I once had an experience of catching up with one of my friend, when I wanted to "beat" him up, just for fun, and I must say that he is an extremely weak physically person, but it took me time to catch him, and it is really not so easy to damage the person even if you almost get to he/she. You can't really punch a person hard while running, especially with your legs, of course... And once my friend got to the people and asked them for help, saying that I wanted to hurt him (it was a good joke)... And as I was a teenager that time, I soon needed to escape myself, as some people wanted to "defend" him against me))) And if someone thinks that this story is fake, try your own - ask a friend to escape from you and than try to catch him/her. You will understand that running is a good choice, even for a puny people, and especially for them, as far as they can't fight. By the way, running will not anger your opponent as much as fighting (if you can't fight but try to do something with person, that much more stronger than you...)

I've literally been put in the position where I'm being attacked and considered running. I took TKD and minimal boxing for a while before I was attacked. 4 people came around a corner on me in a park. I was confused and thought maybe they thought I was someone else. Once I realized they were going to attack me I wrestled with fight or flight. Initially, I was backing up from the lead guy. He swung a few times and I blocked them. Then for some reason I temporarily abandoned the fight and turned around to run. It seemed like forever but I'm sure was only a few seconds. I saw that the whole way I would have to run was up a hill. And it dawned on me that I can't fuc*ing run. Always hated it. So, I turned around and fought back. I did as decent as I think I could have done. They were getting more and more irritated that they couldn't hit me and one of them said something like, "just give us your fn money". And I was like oh, that's what this is. A robbery. Here... Idgaf, take it. Well, that's when they all 4 jumped in at the same time and broke 3 of my ribs. Basically, I volunteered. Just because if it was money they wanted then I didn't care to fight for it. I only had $2 on me. Dummy me didn't realize they would start kicking and stomping after they got it. Do I have regrets? Yeah, I do. In retrospect of course. I could have been killed. When they all got arrested I begged the police to just give me 2 mins alone with each of them. That didn't happen. But they all did prison time. And I learned another valuable lesson. Anyways, running is stupid.

If it's a meathead with a good dash, they won't even run after you, because their masculinity was asserted at the point that you began running away, so you're safe. 2) "Those who advise you to run, can't run very well themselves" ... ok? And even if they did, it's easier to learn how to run away than it is to learn how to fight -- stop eating and run a few times a week. Most effective fighters can't fight, they're just big, fat, and drunk. ... It's all kind of bizarre; this dude makes these very confident statements about self-defense attitudes, batons, etc, but never seems to think these things through. I’m late here to the party here and have 2 things to add: 1. Your situation may involve your social life. Turning around and running may make you look like a coward. With that said, nowadays many adults on the street who are willing to fight a complete stranger are carrying a weapon. That’s why many professional fighters will still tell people to run when they can. Strangers don’t use rules; and often public violence occurs quite close to crowded areas. You can sometimes save your life if you can just make it 25 feet. 2. You are used to dealing with in shape fighters. I think it’s easier for you to forget how often the bigger and stronger guy is also overweight or slower than the small guy. Most people know about the typical overweight and out of shape bully who picks in the small guys; guys who could run circles around him. This happens all the time in the wild. Small animals like rabbits and chipmunks are much faster and easier to change directions than their predators, hence their survival. The predators have to be tricky and very few can just straight up blast chase them like a cheetah would. Most of the time, the victim of a violent encounter without weapons is not the heavier guy but the lighter one; the one who can still outrun the heavier guy when both do not run regularly. I do acknowledge that you are at a disadvantage when doing so as all they have to do (if they can catch you) is shove you and you will most likely fall down on a hard surface when that happens.

I don't know but a lot of these points really don't make sense to me -"You get injured if you just start sprinting" I sprint a lot without any warmup and I mean like full force sprinting and I never got injured -"If they are better fighter they probably gonna catch you" like in some situations it's true but you can be really tall skinny person who would lose in most of the fights but outrun a lot of better fighters. Also running takes some technic and conditioning good runner will be faster than good fighter also as somebody who does a little bit of parkour depending on the location you could definitely escape through terrain your pursuer would not be able to chase you without training technics (but that really depends where you are ) -"If he catches you you will be tired" as same as he would like he ran also -"You gonna fight him somewhere you didn't plan to" you running first so if you not stupid you probably running somewhere where are people who could help you And overall I just feel like If you start running most thugs are not willing to run after you. That being said I am don't have any experience with fighting or being chased, I did run away from some dangerous people but they didn't chase me. So this is just my uninform point of view and if you want to add something or correct me I would be interested to hear you out.

If you just start running, the risk of injury is more than just you pulling a muscle. Step on a soft patch of dirt or wet grass and you'll be taking a really hard fall- now you're hurt and in a terrible position. Usually, someone isn't going to attack you unless they think they can win, and trying to run doesn't change their mind. You don't know what conditioning the other guy has, so you better be damn sure your own cardio is great, or you'll end up gassed out and still having to fight. If you doubt your cardio at all, just running isn't going to help you at all. If the guy catches you, it's because either you gassed out first, or he is in that much better shape- neither is good news for you. If he got tired first, you'd have successfully outrun him, so there wouldn't be a fight of two tired people.

johny trace he never says when “You get injured if you start sprinting” nor does he say “If they are a better fighter they will probably catch you.” Both of these statements are straw mans of his position and a misrepresentation. He says that if you are in an encounter with someone who is more physically strong than you are then they are also probably more physically fast than you are. Which is true. Stronger people also tend to be faster people at least among the average person as the reason men can run faster than women is due to more muscle being present within the leg which allows for more power and energy to be generated with each step. So if you are fighting someone who is stronger than you it is a bad idea to run because they are also probably faster than you. Which is logical, the reason fighting generally tends to fair better than running is because of much more complex fighting is than running which allows for intelligence and strategy to play a much larger factor. So if you train martial arts it will give you a much better chance against someone who is stronger and or faster than you.

Also alot of the time an attacker wouldn't even chase you, say if you were in a secluded area and he was trying to rob you, chasing after you might be risky and not worth the effort.

Snake Plissken if you find yourself in a secluded area standing across from someone that’s robbing you and you decide to run, most certainly he will instinctively chase you because he’s already decided that you are his prey and he is a predator. Additionally, the robber would be better at running than you (the person that wonders into dark secluded places where thieves lay in wait) so he’d for sure catch you

punxone I wish I remembered the source but I don’t so I’m fine with you not believing me. I once read a article where they concluded that almost no one would chase someone else for more than 90 meters unless catching the person was thier only goal. Many muggings and general attacks get fouled but things as simple as someone being at the same place unexpectedly. I see no reason why someone would try to chase you when it’s easier to just go for someone else who wouldn’t.

Don't you think that in some contexts, running away just ends the confrontation? It seems to take a particular kind of confrontation (such as getting mugged) for the other people to sprint after you and catch up with you 50 meters down the line, or so.

It really sounds like there's a lot of "it depends" here. If you were in a low visibility area (eg, dark alley), would you not want to run to a high visibility area (eg, high volume pedestrian traffic)? Sure, there's always the risk of bystander effect, but what's the net/net of the dark alley effect? Also, there seems to be a presumption that the attacker has mad cardio skills, and isn't just hoping that the victim wilts/submits. I don't need to outrun Usain Bolt, I just need to outrun/outlast the attacker. If I risk a hamstring pull even with regular training, then what sort of risks does an untrained attacker face? I'm not discounting the obvious benefits of pugilism or grappling, but I'm disheartened by what seems to be a "running? bah, don't even bother" message. If the attacker is about to go full "Jake the Mus", I'll take my chances with running. Can we talk about situational awareness? I think the message is that "Running without training is not a significantly better plan than fighting without training. Whatever your plan is, it is likely to fail if you don't train for it. So training needs to be step #1 in any plan." What I disagree with is that we're "talking about about [just] sprinting". Yes, you're going to want to start out very fast to open up distance between you and the threat, but after that you just need to maintain that distance long enough for them to give up chasing you. You will probably never have to run a mile to escape an attacker, but you should probably be able to sprint a city block and then run a mile (running the whole time) before "running" is your plan. And that's going to take training for the average person who is probably overweight and probably works behind a desk, or standing in mostly one place, or driving a vehicle, none of which are going to keep your cardio on point naturally.

@@strikesubmit - Well, there's your group of people to train running with... Lol Seriously though, you only need to delay the threat as long as it takes for them to get safe. So running (and opening up an insurmountable lead) while you spend 30 or so seconds delaying until you too find an opportunity to run, is probably the best bet for everyone. What you don't want is to have to make a "last stand" between them and the threat because they just stay there, causing you to have to stay there too.

What if you’re fighting multiple people tho? Or fighting people with weapons after your money? What if you’re running to a car? To a restaurant or store? To a locked bathroom? To a group of your people (or even random people) since you said yourself that being alone is much scarier than getting gassed out? It sounds like running is the best option unless you’re in a back alley in which cаse you decided to go into a back alley so you’re too stupid to defend yourself anyway. I like the idea that you should hold your ground tho. As a guy who’s 5’5” like you, I’d get outrun even tho I train every day. Also, like you said, the same people who would beat you up would also outrun you. I understand the video, but I just disagree with the idea that you shouldn’t run in most of or even just a lot of self defense scenarios. I think in any of the cases listed above which I believe is the great majority of self-defense scenarios, you should run (after giving them your money if they want it). In my opinion, the amount of times where one has a good chance of winning the fight (one on one, no weapons, size at least similar, etc.) are minuscule in comparison to the amount of times where at least something could go wrong since even the best scenarios have the chance of that one lucky punch going the wrong way even ignoring all the weapons, multiple people, etc. If I’m wrong about the type of fights that happen in self-defense scenarios, then I’m wrong about running. However, I would definitely be right if this were in the U.S. during the quarantine since people use Kung flu to kill you with the one inch cough. Run fu is the perfect counter to Kung flu (unless they have run flu in which case why tf are they outside anyway?). Love your vids man. Edit: I also think running (sprinting and cardio) is a good exercise if you warm up and be safe. Sprinting trains fast twitch muscle fibers for darting especially if you’re small and need to get inside like Mike Tyson would as a shorter heavyweight. Cardio trains endurance so you don’t gas out which as you said is scarier than getting hurt. Also, a lot of Thai fighters do it to lose fat and condition shins.

Run when you know or are at least confident you can get away. If your overweight, wearing tight jeans and your attacker is fit and wearing loose bottoms it should be obvious your not gonna out run him. Just an example. Its a contextual thing. Do they want to hurt or kill? It really always come to not being alone and not getting tired, not having any major disadvantages. If you have a gun or car you can stop ou outrun them. If u're alone and unarmed, your only option would really be to fight.

when I was a very early teenager (like 13 or 14) we had this 20-something thug sicc'd on us by someone who didn't like us for whatever reason. I pepper sprayed him and sprinted away from him, and sure enough, it was dark and I eventually tripped on a curb and got caught by the guy. the ultimate irony is that running separated me from my friends by a few dozen yards so the guy had a chance to get some hits in while i was trying to stumble back to my feet. if i'd just fought from where i was i would have had the benefit of my buddies right there (and not starting from the ground)... we were all a lot younger and smaller than him but i'd take that over being isolated against him for 10 seconds or however long it took my friends to catch up to us. a highly specific situation, I know, but a real-world example of where running wasn't the best play

THANK YOU FOR THIS! I've been saying the same thing for decades. Running away is one of the worst things to do in a confrontation. It's like encountering a wild dog. If you turn around and run, that dog will chase you, catch you, and kill you. The best thing to do is face the dog and fight it off, using caution. I hate those people who always say "Just run away." If it was that easy, then why learn self defense at all? Too many stupid people in the world.

The difference is that wild dogs are faster than people. Some people can, in fact, be faster than others. There is no safety net like putting distance between you and your attacker. Running away can make you find a safer spot, can make a mugger give up eventually, can make you find help. Fighting can get you stabbed, knocked out or shot at point blank, especially if you have no experience in brawls or are unarmed.
