I was 3 when my mom started reading us Jock of the Bushveld. Two pages a night was too slow so I taught myself to read. I read the book myself. Wonderful, wonderful book. Those dogs at Dogtown are each perfect. 🙏🕊🌹😇

Jock's dam, Jess, is referred to as "a bull terrier with a dull brindled coat". Fitzpatrick writes "the father was an imported dog and was always spoken of as the best dog of the breed." I haven't found direct references to breeds, but he does write that the sire was a "yellow dog". I reckon there was a lot of what was later called Boerboel in Jock.

The boerbul was not formalise as a breed until the 20th Century, they were a real knock about guard & hunting dog.

Exact location is uncertain, but I found some fascinating information and GPS co-ordinates on www.lionroarsafaris.co.za Unfortunately I haven't been there.
