Just HOW messy are QUAIL? They're pretty gross!

It's time for some weekly chores and I'm cleaning out the quail because boy, they're pretty gross.↓↓↓↓↓↓ CLICK “SHOW MORE” FOR RESOURCES ↓↓↓↓↓↓↓↓
If you keep Coturnix Quail, you'll know that they're pretty messy animals. They quickly start to smell, happily walk around in their own poop and can need continuous cleaning out. In this vid, it's daily chores on the homestead, and we look at quail, their enclosure, cleaning and a few tips.

I line my chicken coop with vinyl off cuts I got free. I can then remove the whole mess in one go and wash if needed! The best thing I ever did, cleaning is now so quick. Give it a try. We have a website in Australia 'Freecycle' where people post unwanted goods, cost me nothing.

I have mine in a cage with quarter inch coated hardware cloth on the bottom. Their poop is caught in a metal pan that is lined with brown paper. I just roll up the paper and put down a new sheet. The brown paper and all goes right into my compost bin

I found that sand is what they prefer. Closer to their natural surroundings. It drop sprigs of seeding grass in for them too because they not only eat it but as it dries to thatch they like to make nests with it in the summer to lay their eggs.

I love watching your videos . I watched this one as I am just about to put my quail out into a secondhand rabbit hutch . There was actually something quite therapeutic about watching you clean yours out lol and yes , mine are super messy too .

I use Serama bantam hens to hatch and raise my quail. They are about the same weight as heavier Coturnix quail. But I can tell you the quail produce 2-3 times the mess these little chickens do. They really poop a lot, large droppings for such a small bird, and then proceed to trample it into the bedding and create a solid mat. Chickens at least scratch up and aerate everything.

Yep, totally agree. Bedding lasts a while with chickens because exactly as you said, they turn it over. Quail just pound it down!

If you put your quails on deep mulch instead, they'll dig it up and eat the bugs and it'll compost down into good soil.

I'm always amazed that your quail are so quiet. When they get out of the coop, they just jump out and stay there. Mine are super super active and look like they would try to get away. Is there anything I could do to do better?

When you have animals in cages it would probably work better and easy cleaning if you had them on wire cage material .

I'm not so sure Tori. I've seen a lot of material that says mesh isn't good for quails' feet. I know many people who do keep them on mesh but I don't either.

@@BrimwoodFarm Really? I bought an incubator and then ordered some eggs. In a space of under two months I have 13 quail. Not boasting but I'm just surprised you'd say that. Love how you care for your animals. I feel you on the poop and dirty dried on toes but mesh and play sand in a washing bowl with half a hole cut out of it with a hole saw.
