Keeping Quail Safe: Predator Proofing your Run

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

One of the most important aspects of keeping quail is making sure they have secure safe housing in which to live. There are many types of predators out there who prey on little quails and knowing what you have in your area will go a long way to helping you deter them - and don't make the same mistake I did - just because you can't see the predators doesn't mean they are not there!
RIP Cub!

First time for me. Great hints. I will pour large concrete run, use stronger gauge wiring but also two layers (inside and out of frame) plus, add a raised bed within filled with all that they need. And your door lock hint was great. Thank you.

Ha ha! Hello and welcome to my 'random hobbies that are too small to have their own channel' channel :) . Funnily enough the quail were originally going to go on the Tiny channel hence why they are on the logo, but decided they would be better here. Also I didn't realise my voice was that recognisable! :D

Subscribed to your channel! Love the video quality and editing! And your narration is wonderful! My quail hatched Christmas Eve and I absolutely want to keep them safe! I'm doing half inch by half inch galvanized mesh to be extra safe for when they move outside.

Those staples work for smaller predators but for coyotes use the 1 1/4 crown stapler way more durable.

I can see you let them roam around strawberry plants. Is there any veg / soft fruit that they won't damage that I could grow in a run? I imagine they might leave gooseberries and maybe raspberrys alone or atleast leave some for me?

I want to start farming quail for meat and eggs but I don't know where to start. I don't know if I want to build a coop or just buy one from amazon. I learned from another video that apperintly quail manure is better for plants compaired to chicken and\or cow manure, is that true? One thing's for sure I'm going to get a rat hunting dog for pest control.

Thanks for uploading this. It is normal behavior for rats to kill quails! They also destroy birds nests. Rats kill birds mainly at night. They will certainly kill racing pigeons aswell as many people who keep pigeons have found out the hard way. . Once they get a taste for them they will be back until they all gone. Not only that but the rats carry disease too. If they drink from the quails water and saliva from rats get into the water. Signs are quails going round with eyes shut. There is a long name for the disease that I cannot remember. Will edit this comment if I get the name.

Thanks for your videos. I am in the UK, assuming you are also. Any advice on where to get some decent wire? I've browsed many of the usual DIY stores but most seem to only have the weak stuff.. online the prices seem to range from unbelievably expensive (£200+ for a roll) or an ok price but I'm worried the wire would be too thin...? Any advice you have would be great. Enjoying the videos!

Yeah, rats are a nightmare! Had a whole family of them visiting and deciding to rip my poor quails to shreds. You could imagine my shock when I got out in the morning. Four quails left, and one of them badly hurt. Moved them away from that run, and placed one of those cages that close automatically once something goes inside them. Caught rats everyday for weeks! Drove them out to a transfer station and let them out there. Hope they have a good life there, I really don't want them to find their way back!

I don't have any quail yet. My fiance and I are planning to get a bigger house and when we do we are thinking of getting some. We haven't decided weither to keep them outside for three out of the four months (winters are very heavy and cold where I live) or to just keep them inside and only let them outside for the day and bring them inside at night if we want them to have a little fun. My worries for outside is raccoons and coyotes. Snakes are less common but rats are another thing to worry about when I get them.

Hey Jenna! It’s a tough decision to make between inside or out, quails are very hardy when it comes to the cold so long as they can keep dry, their sort of potato shape holds body heat very efficiently and a flock will cuddle up together for heat if they need to. But predators are a pain all year round so indoors might be easier to make safe. Just to point out on the subject of moving quails inside at night, I find them virtually impossible to herd, they just ignore me, so you might want make life easier and get a set up where you can move the whole run rather than just the birds! Good luck, Lauren.

If rats are eating the feed and you don't address it they'll eventually bring friends. A rat pack could easily take a bird a bet.
