I don't think that today's defenders are better than those of before ... besides, Diego's time was much more violent. Nowadays defenders barely touch the players and it's a foul!! And btw he was 2 inches shorter than Messi too so there's no chance that he could've used his physique!

I'm English and even i concede this guy was one of the greatest there has ever been. You cant use stats in comparison to the pub league that la liga is now for Barca and Real. He played in Serie A when it was the highest level in the world and when teams could win the league scoring less than 40 goals together (See AC Milan winning the league scoring 32 goals) He was completely unparalleled in his generation and fundamentally changed the game, arguably the first player to ever win a world cup by himself.

I am from Spain. I am 31 years old. I have been enjoying Leo’s dominance for years. I saw him in Camp Nour the first time he played for FCB first team against Juventus: he broke a prime Cannavaro many times. Last year I started watching Diego’s games since I was way too young to see them when he was active. KEEP IN MIND one little piece of info that no one mentions here: Leo has played in the best roster on a football club ever: FCB 2006- 2016. He was surrounded by other diamonds. Maradona NEVER PLAYED with teammates that were close to that level. Never. FCB wan’t. Napoli was a mid level team in a competitive Serie A. Still, he brought glory wherever he went. For me, Maradona is one step above.

From you comments it's mostly on Maradonas leadership and his ability to make his teammates better, I do think he has that over Messi, but Messi is a one of life time genius, individually skilled wise messi has no comparison, this is a team sport though so probably Maradona leadership qualities couple with his insane skill might make him a better pick, but on skill I don't think Messi will ever have an equal

His dribbling, heading, passing and creativity was superb. Many don't understand he played Serie A in a time where defenders that were out to kill you. If you don't have this man in your Top 3 of all time you don't know football.

At that time, Italian football was the undisputed best league in the world and the quality in that league was unbelievable. People forget context when we discuss great players in the past. He came out on top in spectacular fashion when quite a lot of things were against him. The world cup has to count for a lot of it. And Messi losing 4 finals in a row has gotta be a part of the conversation. He choked when it mattered most in his career. All those trophies and numbers for Barcelona are not gonna make up for losing the final in 2014, 2015, and 2016.

Maradona is beyond statistical measurement and comparison. He was pure magic and unlike anything the world had seen. Also, he was a great leader. That's something people tend to forget...his mentality on the pitch and his willpower to win is unmatched. He made everyone around him a better player and he changed the game forever.

He was like an iphone but in 1986, before his time, did things that players cznt do today.he won the world cup by himself. He was that great,the greatest in a time when pitches were awful and players were allowed to tackle,ive never seen anyone control a ball like him, the greatest ever and there will never ever be another diego maradona he is on top of the greatest players. Amen

It is always difficult to compare eras. But for me, look at the pitches, and the tackles that Maradona had to put up with. Add to that the fact the he basically played in average teams and almost single handedly turned them into champions, and Maradona, for me personally, is head and shoulders above others. The goal against England constantly blows my mind.

Science Talk that’s a tough one. Romario was insane and I believe he’s up there with the most official goals. But that Brazil team was very good. Yea it was a while since they won it but Romario didn’t repeat any of those heroics for Brazil again. On the other hand Maradona took not such a powerful Argentina to 2 back to back finals. While also takin charge of the toughest league in the world at the time. He was just different. I’ll Maradona any day over Romario.

All Romario did score goals and be a poacher for a team that was a lot better Argentina’s. You mentioned literally the 3 players that scored in the final. While i can name you the star studded team Brazil had from front to back. Don’t forget he had Bebeto. All he did was bully the weak teams that year. Only important goal was against Sweden. Reached the final and was put in the pocket of 35 yr old retiring Baresi. Romario is one of the greats and surely legendary but will never be on the same topic of Diego.

Serie A was the most competitive league while maradona was there and he brought a team battling relegation to the title whereas Messi has had arguably the best team in the world around him his entire career, I know it may seem a bit biased considering my profile picture but no one is better then Diego.

@Tech Guy He had an incredible peak, one of the best peaks I've seen but his overall career wasn't as impressing as some of the other guys in history who rank higher, Ronaldinho essentially had one of the best seasons I've seen in 05-06 but what followed was a mediocre 06 world cup and after that he was finished at the highest level, 2 mediocre campaigns at Barcelona followed and the rest.... meh. Other players just had a lot more longevity than him in the history of football so they deserve to be rated higher on my all-time list.

Dude doesn’t have top stats but his playing style was something else.

@@krum6334 41, so old enough to remember watching him actually play. Mexico '86, was the first time, when I was 7 years old. I remember everyone getting worked up about him cheating with his Hand of God goal. As a Welshman, I figured, oh well, at least he did it against England! lol. What he did at Napoli was just as incredible. In both cases (Argentina/Napoli) he elevated bang-average teams to another level entirely, practically dragging them to glory on raw talent alone.

Maradona is in my view the best player ever. Living legend. Better than Pele, Messi and Ronaldo by far. He won the WC by himself. dribbling the whole opposite team to peaces and scoring. I have never seen any other player doing that.

Dude, Maradona was on another level. He was a bigger threat with his heading, he both worked harder and more effectively defensively, he did it with worse shoes, worse footballs, worse pitches, and dirtier opponents. He did it without highly developed physical training programs, he carried a whole national team to victory in the WC, and the most mind-baffling thing of all is that he did all this shit while on cocaine. Well developed video, but i highly disagree with your summary.

Go to napoli, see how many people called their kids Diego (which is not an italian name) and see the graffiti and shrines all over the city. He has become more than legend, he has become a god. Napoli won a UEFA CUP... not a Champions Cup... it's not the top of Europe... also they won 1 league title... weird but Totti won 1 league title for Roma (a team of the same dynamic)... I don't see anyone saying Totti is as good as Maradona... also Maradona's and Pelle's careers are the most blatantly overblown crap ever... How are they better than Cruyff (since you want players from that era)... Cruyff won 3 straight CHAMPIONS CUPS and Ajax was unbeatable... and after he left they never won again until 1995... and all his teammates say that "if he hadn't left we could have gone for 7 in a row"... well there is some truth in that you have to consider a lot while looking at stats including that Maradona played for a lesser team, but Maradona still lacked consistency, something the other goats do have. Maradona is goat tier worthy together with Messi, Cristiano and Pele but he doesn't particularly stand out to claim the goat title as his own, him the only one. These 4 players all have their different arguments to be the goat but no one of them can really claim it as the only one, neither Maradona. Personally based on talent Maradona is the best of them, 1986 Maradona is the best player that ever played the game, but like I said he lacks that consistency, and being the best ever is more about having talent it is also about the achievements, dominate the sport for years, winning tons of awards and that's where Maradona lacks it to really claim it alone.

@@louisg7147 Pele is a fraud... he scored 1000 goals against amateurs, Brazil won the WC even when he was out injured, so they didn't really need him and when he played in a pro league (brazilian pro league was formed) he scored 0.43 goals per game... meaning he was the equivalent goal scoring ratio of Olivier Giroud in Premier league... for real... this guy is the GOAT of football??? People need to at least learn some history before they say such crap... on the other end... Maradona won the WC but he only won one league title with Napoli, 2 cups with Barca which is nothing and a UEFA cup (which means his team was the best B tier team... which is not that impressive when you're considered as the best player in the world)... The title of the best player in the history of football can be claimed by 5 players... Johan Cruyff (the best football mind in history who led his team to 3 consecutive CHAMPIONS CUPS and when he left they never won again and got knocked out in the round of 16... and he also led Netherlands in the final of the WC and only lost to Argentina cause the cup was being held there and the dictatorship of the country wanted them to win and the game was a total setup), Ronaldo Nazario (before his injury he made every other football player in history look like an amateur), Ronaldinho (in his peak he was the most unstoppable player ever to play the game and the greatest showman we've ever seen) and of course Messi and Ronaldo for obvious reasons... even in the late 2000's and early 2010's that everyone thought Mourinho was the best coach on the planet and parking the bus was the norm for football games and very few goals were scored if any, these guys still scored 50+ goals per year with Messi even reaching that ridiculous 93 goals in a calendar year... both of them completely unstoppable...

The “we have better defenders now” part is a poor argument. The training methods got better for everyone, so the good players are as good as their era let them be.

I think you're very unfair on players from previous eras. Of course technique and fitness levels will improve over time but you can you can only compete in your own time. If Maradona had access to all the sports science and coaching today then who's to say he wouldn't be better than Messi? In 50 years time are we going to say the likes of Messi and Cristiano are less skilful and talented than the players of the future? Think about your logic. You also don't mention that there was far less protection for players like Pele and Maradona. Check out the treatment Maradona was on the end of vs Bilbao in the 80s that included a horror tackle by 'the Butcher of Bilbao' shattering Diego's ankle and nearly ending his career. That was why Maradona was so angry in that brawl in the copa del rey final.

U forget to mention.. Back then no yellow card for tackling from behind...the beating Maradona took is beyond comparison to any ball player today.

I was lucky enough to have seen him play and he was nothing short of amazing. And I was really lucky to see him live make that amazing 1986 goal against England. Ruud Gullit said it best. "You can put Maradona in a shitty 2nd division club and still win the Champions League". I think he is the best of all time.

I was lucky to watch Maradona play live at the stadium, at his prime, when on Napoli, by that time the italian league was the world top league at the time, all the football mega stars were there, any team was a powerhouse, i watched messi and cristiano live aswell and, well, maradona was just in way higher level, gullit is absolutly right, this guy could carry a team alone on his shoulders and win the champions cup by himself, i know it might seem exagerated now, but believe me guys, if you had seen him play, you would understand, he is indeed the very best ever, and by far.

At that time, the 'champions league' didn't exist - instead it was the European Cup and only the winner of each national league would get a chance to compete , along with the previous winner of EC (if not also the winner of its league). Therefore, Maradona had EXACTLY 1 CHANCE to win the European Cup (1987-88), the year after Napoli's first of 2 serie a titles with him as captain (and still their only 2 to this day). the second serie a title was won in his last season 1989-90 and so he couldn't play the European Cup/ Champs league in the next year. They lost to a really strong Real Madrid team that were en route to winning 4 consecutive La Liga titles before Cryuff turned the tables around 1990. Its easier to get multiple stabs at champs league when all you have to do is finish in the top 4 of your league; something especially in today's era of super cups is ridiculously easy as the gulf in financial power between the top 4-6 teams and others is waay too high - you basically need to come 4th out of 6 realistic contenders. In 80s serie there was the '7 sisters' - 7 realistic contenders for the title itself - which no league - none- have right now (restrictions of only 2 foreign players - not their being such high financial gulf etc were all factors). For context, Juventus finished 7th - yes 7th! in the year when they won the frikking European cup with Platini (84-85), and then they won the serie a the following season! Its like Man City or Bayern or Barcelona finishing 7th and then winning again. Per contra, I don't think there has a single season out of the decade and a half Messi and Ronaldo played when they didn't play champions league. Maradona also had only a couple of stabs at UEFA cup (years after the two other times Napoli finished runners up in serie a) and he won it once. Don't confuse the UEFA cup of that time with the current Europa league which has 4th - 6th best teams of major countries and 2-3rd teams of other leagues. The UEFA cup at that time would have the 2nd placed teams from all major and minor European leagues. You can imagine that some of those 2nd place teams may on paper or immediate form be even better than the last years champions. you know who they beat in that UEFA final of 1989- Bayern fucking Munich. the same Bayern had supplied many players to the World cup finalist teams of 1982 and 1986 and winners of 1990. Like I said, a bit of context matters. If you were expecting Maradona to have won 5 UCL trophies, you have none.

I am 47 years old, i played football when younger, watched football all my life, I was lucky enough to watch Maradona, Messi and CRonaldo playing live at the stadium each at their prime, and well, however messi and cristiano are indeed amazing players, maradona was at a way higher level, i mean, he was just that good, the man was a phenom, i never seen, to this day, anyone close to him, he was just plain out alien.. the most gifted player ever, maradona is by far the very best footballer ever so far. Raymar you simply cant put it by the stats, i wish you were old enough to have seen him play live at his prime with your own eyes, you would understand what we, older people talk about. there are no words to explain how good maradona was.

I saw George best at his peak, remember the Dutch teams of the 70s, and appreciate Pele's legacy (world cup winner at 17! ) But Maradona as you say was a phenomenan!! We are lucky to have witnessed Messi and CR7 the last 2 decades, But ask anyone who remembers, how they would have faired in Maradonas era!! Defenders didn't just go out to kick you, but to try and put you in hospital!! Yes the greatest!

By the time he was 21 he'd won league titles, European cup, been the leading goal scorer, player of the year, and European player of the year !! Yes he was special! Equally good on both feet, great header and goal scorer. But for me it was when he was at a standstill surrounded by players but could still find a way out! And had great acceleration. But it was all gone far too quickly!

All jokes aside, to this day Napoli has won 2 Serie A title. The 2 titles won with El Pibe as their leader. Imagine nowadays Messi or Ronaldo going to play for Sassuolo and become champions... and win the UEFA cup 😅

Diego was the most naturally gifted football player that ever lived, he was a prodigy already better than his coach at Five, a Mozart of football, he would do things on games that most kids today have never seen done by anyone and probably will never see, he carried his home country into the greatest world cup final, and most people talk about his drug use which we cannot deny, the drug use began in europe in the latter days in Barcelona, how many players didn't smoke a joint or drank till midnight, party life etc//in those days it was very different the game was very different, and despite all that Maradona had already proven to be the most naturally gifted and best player of his generation. Scoring over 20 goals in a season for Napoli in the 80’s when the Italian league was the best in the world is an incredible feat. To win seria A twice and uefa cup with them is also incredible. This guy could carry a team which he proved, both with Napoli and Argentina. Do not compare his stats with Messi or CR7, his stats are great in a time when it was a lot tougher. Not over rated one bit, one of the best ever.

Yeah besides Messi and CR7 have always played in teams that are world class, teams that even without Messi/Ronaldo would be world class. They are always surrounded by stars. For instance I love Messi, but I mean he has always played alongside greats like Ronaldinho, Iniesta, Xavi, Etoo, Henry, Suarez, Coutinho, Neymar etc. Maradona took a team that had never won the Serie A, a below average team, and made them into a world class team. So it's incredibly hard to compare players with such different careers.

Hey, I would like to point out that Maradona was a CAM unlike Messi and Pele, who played majority of their careers as Forwards. And if you look at his stats from this perspective, they're crazy, because I don't think any other midfielder has scored that many goals or provided that amazing amount of assists.

The question is how good he would have been without being addicted to cocaine.. Far superior to anyone else in the history of the game

In my opinion, Diego was and still is underrated. He played at a time when pitches were, at times, barely fit for purpose and defenders were given the benefit of the doubt in the tackle. These days, the brutality of what Maradona faced would be considered assault. If you only want to consider one aspect of why Diego was the greatest, then look at the way he kicks the ball. No back lift. It’s like the ball is propelled by magic.

I grew up watching both Pelé & Maradona when they actually played & let me tell you. They were *_EVERYTHING_* their lengendary status encapsulate & more! Difference between Maradona & Messi is: If you swopped Messi for Maradona in that all conquering Guardiola Barca side of 2009 to 2012. Maradona is winning that Champions League. Am not so sure that if you replaced Maradona for Messi in that 1984 to 1990 Napoli side, Messi could have made the impact Maradona had with them, as Napoli werent a dominate team like Juventus, AC Milan, Inter Milan, until Maradona went there & won the Scudetto with Napoli. Similarly, swop Messi for Maradona in the 2014 world cup final & my money would be more on Maradona landing that world cup, than what we saw of Messi in that final. Again, swop Maradona for Messi in that Argentina 1986 world cup team & would Messi have made the same *_impact_* as Maradona? Driving a not so great Argentinian team to world cup glory, with Maradona producing *_the greatest ever world cup tournement perfomance?_* . Highly unlikely

Maradona would play with a bottler like Higuain and Messi would be playing with Valdano, Almiron and Burruchaga. Messi created a one on one and Higuain missed it. Where as Valdano and Burruchaga stepped up and scored to win the final. It's not just down to one player. There's a reason football's a team game.

@@jkjkjkjkjk537 this is a fair argument, but to debate on this, if you do the research, you'll realize Maradona's teammates missed way more chances than they put away as well. If you take the 86 tournament and see how many chances Maradona made, Valdano alone skewed more than 60% of the chances Diego created for him. Contrast that with Higuan actually being the most consistent performer for Argentina until the fateful finals, Higuain's numbers are much better than Valdano's or Burruchaga's. That being said, it's still a what-if situation, and none of this conclusively settles the argument, since it doesn't matter how many chances you miss, rather the ones you put away. For eg, Fernando Torres may have had a horrible time in Chelsea, but he still stepped up to the plate and scored the winning goal in the CL finals. The one thing that you can conclude though, is that both Messi and Maradona contended with teams that weren't getting the best output for their effort - personally I believe Maradona's strength of character and personality for leadership could have a better drive at making a team better than Messi's individual brilliance

Okay, let's settle this once and for all: Messi is good, really good, arguably the most naturally talented player especially in terms of longevity. Plus let's not forget that he plays football in an era where video technology has made it possible for opponents before games, to analyse everything you are capable of doing, from several videos, YET he has remained a game changer for years! You cannot compare Messi or Ronaldo to Pele from an era with less video footage, who showed up and opponents didn't always know what to expect, until he has done the damage to your defence. Having said that, charisma is the only thing that separates Maradona from Messi. When Maradona played, every other player on his team instantly became confident and performed as the best player in their position. If Messi had that thing in him, he would be undisputed of all time. For those who didn't see Maradona play, there is a KZread video titled _The Maradona Challenge,_ where you have to guess what he is going to do with the ball. You will be amazed at what makes him so great; he isn't cut from the same cloth as Messi, neither did Maradona have the longevity and discipline that Messi has. Truth is, *we can't really compare them side by side.*

But I'd rather have Maradona in his prime than Messi if I have to be honest. I fucking love Leo and he's my favorite. But Leo's character and charisma are not as good as Maradona's. Maradona elevated the fuck out of Argentina and Napoli. Imagine what he could do in your favorite team? Mine is United. But longetivity has to be an issue with Diego. As you and many others have pointed out, he had a lot of issues whereas Ronaldo and Messi have just stayed on top for years and years and dominated the game. But perhaps with better training, technology, science, and more knowledge, Maradona and Pele could also reach teh same heights. On a more personal level, Maradona has won the league with Napoli and a world cup with Argentina, and he won in spectacular fashion. Messi failed to win anything for Argentina and I doubt he ever will. That's a big fucking black spot in Messi's career. If we're talking about being the "greatest of all time", you can't have any excuse to not achieve or surpass the level of achievements of the other greats. You can give all the excuses for Messi in 2014, 15, and 16... but in the end he choked in all those tournaments and they matter in the long run.

His best years were when he demolished opponents, where when the opponents also had to focus on other threatening players in his team (like Xavi, Pedro, Suarez, David Villa, Neymar etc). But in Maradona's team, the opponents all focused on him, because the others were mostly nobodies, YET he will stand out and even make his fellow players shine in their respective positions. PS: It's *a common misconception in KZread arguments, that Messi has never won any international titles.* But off the top of my head right now, I remember he has won the Junior World Cup (which they retained again when Aguero first came to the international limelight), and also Olympic football gold (when Di Maria first came to international attention).

Yeah, I remember when my mom told me she saw Maradona play in a football match while he was in Napoli. She said - and if ask her about that, she always uses the same answer - that Maradona was like he had the ball on his feet like he was using a magnet or something like that. Think that says a lot about this amazing player

Diego played at a time when defenders went for his legs - horrendously broken on one occasion in Spain - not the ball, and he still rode the tackles whilst dribbling. You need a tough mentality to play that way.

The reason why I consider Diego maradona the greatest footballer ever has nothing to do with these stats.... you only need to watch his matches .. the passion the drive and the ability to motivate any average team to win... this was never repeated or done before ... pele had a team that safe guarded his interests , Messi too never faced the pressure to revitalise a team like maradona did .... yes Messi is a more consistent footballer , yes pele is a great ambassador of the sport ... but maradona is the greatest footballer ever

Pele was superior to Maradona Maradona himself once said " people who call me the greatest footballer probably has never seen Pele on the pitch" . It was Pele who creates the legacy of no 10 jersey.. Pele in his prime could play at any position and can still be the best... He could even play as the goalkeeper that's why he was complete and most importantly he was an honest player who never betrayed with football.....

Maradona was really that good, a class above the rest!

Serie A in the 80's was probably the closest thing we've had to a super league in football history. It was outrageous how many legendary players were all playing there at the same time. The fact that Maradona went there and was undoubtedly considered the best player and the best player to ever play in Italy shows how ridiculously good he was. Plus the guy had the absolute shit kicked out of him in every game he played in. Imagine him today in our cupcake leagues where defenders are afraid to crunch you if there's a slight chance they wont touch the ball. In Maradona's era no defender ever thought twice about going straight for his ankles every time he got near the ball. He's the goat.
