Just HOW BAD was NYCK DE VRIES in F1?
Спорт
The latest casualty of the F1 scene is Dutch world champion (FE) Nyck De Vries.
Take a look with me at his career and just what he got up to that led to his replacement, and if it was needeed
Nyck drove for 1 race for Williams in 2022 and then was signed for Alphatauri in 2023 to finally get his shot.

Yes expectations were high. But entering at 27 having so much experience at lower levels i think the expectations were warranted
The thing I always say with Nyck is that him being kicked out is somewhat harsh but it's not like he's helped his case. I can't really view him as a rookie as well since it's not like he just graduated from the 2022 F2 season. The expectations of him being in FE (a series that needs drivers to be careful about not crashing into each other in narrow circuits) and his racing career and experience were always going to be there, not to mention his age. Yeah we've seen with Alonso and Hamilton that age doesn't matter at that point, but when you're 28 years old and older than more than half the grid including Max, the pressure is always going to be there. His days are already more numbered than other rookies that the series has seen in recent years. Technically, 28 would be around the middle age or lifespan of a driver in F1 already as most drivers we'd consider established in the sport are around that point in their lives. Though I don't think him moving to Alpha Tauri was a mistake at the time. Because assuming he performs well, he'd have a shot at a Red Bull seat (if Checo retires). He'll probably be number 2 to Verstappen, but that's way higher than Williams will be able to get him. It only became a mistake when Hungary came around and he got dropped.

His failure was going into the Red Bull Young Driver program. He was barely given a chance and the pressure was unbearable.
I have little doubt that he wouldn't have gotten a full season to prove himself had he just signed with Williams. This is why, at least in Nyck's case, I can't blame Red Bull too much for doing Red Bull things.

When you listen to his radio you realise he didn't only have a "meh" start, he didn't study. You don't ask for settings and which button to press half way through the year... For me it's mostly because of that he got kicked. That and his f'ing ego. Sorry but glad he's gone

Things would’ve been better for him had he gone to Williams who supposedly also offered him a full time seat. However, can’t knock him for going to AlphaTauri which was the best option to one day drive a top car. Had he gone to Williams they’d have been more patient, the knock on effect would’ve meant Lawson probably goes to AlphaTauri and Sargeant would’ve stayed in F2.

@@On_Track_91 back then De Vries was a hotter prospect as he had won FE the year prior and scored a P9 in the dog that was the FW45 (2022 Williams), whereas Lawson had finished P3 in F2 but was very far from Felipe Drugovich in the overall points scored, Drugo dominated, back then I don’t remember Lawson being a serious contender for a seat in F1.

With his performance he would not have lasted long anyway. He got the chance to perform, he failed.
I think this season shows a difference between Williams (+Mercedes) and Red bull with how they handle rookies. I would argue Nyck at Alpha Tauri was on level with Logan at Williams, both are rookies, both are in bottom of the barrel cars, and both were easily beat by there teammates. Alpha Tauri Kicked Nyck out before the half way point while Logan completed a full season and is set to have a second. I cant really say which method is better, they both have heavy flaws but at least Williams is forgiving. But Red Bull tends to find better talent. Keep in mind that Hamilton started at Mclaren and according to wikipedia started in the Mclaren Young Driver Programme in 1998. Meanwhile Max was brought into F1 by Toro Rosso.

Yeah personally from a RB perspective not aure why they didn't go with Liam straight away
I said it from the start and i will say it again: scoring points at Monza with a Williams that had a tremendous amount of straightline speed, is not an indicator of a great driver. We already saw he had multiple seasons in F2, wasn't that great with his tyres, and always had a bit of that "Better-than-everybody-else" attitude in Dutch interviews. Sure he had a god-awful car in the AT, but Yuki did better & de Vries was just too slow. I'm Dutch myself but i was glad he had to leave. The funny part is that to this day, AT is still in the same situation with Daniel doing absolutely a great job at dissapointing everyone & Yuki being the better driver again.
So basically he was slightly better than Ricciardo is doing
There was some team insides (im commenting before watching so, not sure if it was mentioned), that he was a diva in the team. He was CHAMPION of f2, he was CHAMPION e-series, he was THE MAN in the paddock - ofc only in his mind. And that was the biggest problem.
It’s a shame he didn’t go to Williams I know logically AT was a better option because of the RB possible seat, but I still think his shot would be longer lasting in the Williams

Instead, Williams got the freedom tower, who arguably has an even worse finishing position than NDV and Goatifi
Nyck de Vries, former Formula 2 and Formula E world champion, he was driving in one of the worst cars of 2023 and the start was difficult as he was driving on a lot of unknown circuits. He was not given enough time on circuits in Europe he is familiar with. A pity he could net even drive at his home race. But F1 is a tough world, sad for him, now he is back in the Formula E again.
Some things I have to mention. At the start of your video explaining Nyck’s time before F1, he was a McLaren junior and left McLaren during 2019, Nyck was not yet affiliated with Mercedes. Also, Alex Albon wasn’t a rookie in F2 in 2018 as he competed the season before with ART Grand Prix

13:05 idk about Ric
De Vries don´t need F1, he is a brilliant WEC driver, and the Endurance is his true "pazzione".
There's a reason nobody wanted Nyck. He was mid. He got lucky when he filled in for Alex. Marko wanted Nyck for Gasly's seat, but Franz Tost and Christian did not. If Franz had gotten his way, the AT seat would have been offered to Mick Schumacher. Was it harsh to cut him halfway through a season where he scored no points? I think he was exceedingly lucky to be in the seat at all. Every other team had a chance to sign him for several years, and no one did. I don't see Toto Wolff lobbying for DeVries.

Saw him in F2 and not once did I think:"This is a promising, young talent." the F1 teams must sign immediately. 2019 was a watered-down field of talent in F2 and although Nyck won the title his main competitors for the title were Nicholas Latifi, Luca Ghiotto, Sergio Sette Camara and Jack Aitken. I said the same about Mick Schumacher in 2020, without his famous last name very few would praise him on merit. DeVries came to Williams and did better than Nicholas Latifi. Well, Latifi wasn't much of a measure for any driver. He wouldn't even be in F1 if not for his dad's sponsorship money to Williams.
