Lucky you! Babs should have concerts just for people who are low income! When she was at the MGM Grand back in the 90s, the tickets were $1,000 piece! Who can afford that?! I want to hear perfection 🥰 , but not at those prices!

I have always loved everything Barbara does, sing, act, direct... Even more impressed when she was getting industry pressure to get a nose job, she refused, stating her nose was an intregal part of her voice, and she refused to change it for someone else's idea of beauty. I think she has always been stunning and uniquely herself.

Exactly. She’s a singer, an actress, a director etc. She’s said that when she’s busy with other stuff, she knows that the voice is always there in the background. Like she can use it when she wants/needs to. To think it’s a one of a kind voice, yet for her, in some ways, it’s almost like a side skill in her wheelhouse. Additionally,like many other singers, who are belters, such as as Celine, Mariah etc, Barbra is also a belter, but only does it when she needs to, when she thinks the song requires it. It is never gratuitous for lack of a better word.

Barbra and not Barbara. Should have been Barbara but someone made a mistake writing Barbra.

When you hear Barbra for the first time, all your attention is focused on that wonderful, velvety voice. I remember being a child and finding a Barbra cassette in my grandmother's drawer. I was totally hypnotized by her voice and I have been a fan all these years.

My dad told me that there are very few singers that if the mic failed, they could go on and still be heard. Streisand’s voice is almost an instrument. The way she can do her range and jump from high to low without very little effort is just amazing. There is a song in Hello Dolly that she has to push out her voice quickly and hard and the way she does it is like nothing.

She sings a lot of love songs. The dipping she does is meant to resemble a sigh. A love sigh. I think it is intentional. Its awesome.

Her vocal talent surpasses all others. Beyond words ... the greatest natural singer of all time. 💞

Her voice is truly a gem!

She has always taken my breath away...and always always cause me goosebumps and tears.. she is SO GIFTED! I just adore her!

One of the most beautiful live moments I've ever witnessed is Barbara & Neil Diamond on grammy's singing "you don't bring me flowers"💜

Everyone must know by now that they went to the same high school Erasmus high. Neil was a year ahead of her and remembers her as being quirky. oh and her major was Spanish and her favorite ice cream is coffee- oh stop me-I love her.

I worked on one the beach residences in MALIBU colony in 1989? I had went up to LA to check it out and soon got on a crew making good money. At Malibu there was a house of some movie producer getting remolded inside I remember it was. next door to Michael Landon's. These were on the beach side the peons lived across the street and didn't have beach front . So poshandclassy laid back feeling. Man went all around santa Monica. Marina Del Rey hidden hills. Beverly .Venice. land of cosmetic surgery Lamborghinis and bloods and crips.

She's always been easy breezy with her vocals. It's effortless. I always loved her voice. I really listened to her on her Guilty album. She also sings wonderful duets. Barbara is top tier. It's interesting that we have subconscious tendencies when we sing. It's our mark of expression in my opinion.

I am really enjoying your analyses of truly talented vocalists. As we all know, there are so many “stars” who cannot sing live, outside of a studio, without significant support via technology. I’d love to see you do Josh Groban.

Barbra literally has Absolute Pitch (like Ella, like Sarah, like Stevie and many others) so everything she does is a choice. She’s also an actress, so she sings in character. Especially as she got older she mixed between singing and speaking in her characterization of the performance. Hence the descending vibrato pitch moments People think that having Perfect Pitch or Absolute Pitch means you sound like a computer, no, it’s a very very human perception and interpretation and feel for music. Barbra is a great example of the humanness of having Absolute Pitch.

Barbra's control of her vocal technique in her twenties was truly remarkable and with a minimum of vocal "messing about" . Her breath control allowing her to sing very long sustained notes was almost operatic and remarkable. Loved your analysis.

This is Barbra's best performance that was filmed in her backyard at her Malibu Estate many years ago! I would recommend the DVD to everyone and you won't be disappointed! Extraordinary! Send in the Clowns and the entire show is off the charts phenomenal!!! Great Job Fil as usual 👌

When she descends in that white outfit, she’s angelic, then comes 😅the voice that has no peer. The audience was already enraptured.

I cannot get over how much I appreciate you zeroing in on Barbra’s voice like this. She has always been a favorite of mine, and I’m even more impressed with no distractions. She really is a super power of a star singer, actor, and entertainer.

I was 12 in 1986 when I first heard this live performance of Evergreen . I was hypnotised at the way her voice floated and glided through this song that she wrote for her film “A Star is Born” . A more “modern “ 80’s version of a 10 year old song . The “killer “ finale note that you aptly described was spellbinding and something I have never heard and never will from another artist .When she reached that crescendo “ TIME won’t change the meaning of one love “ was the moment I fell in love . Indeed , after 3 decades of listening and admiring her genius as a vocalist , time never changed the meaning of my one love for Barbra , the greatest female vocalist of any century . Thank you so much for this analysis. You are pure genius , it is a joy to hear someone articulate in detail how unique her voice and technique is . Her creamy voice and fabled breath control . And it is a joy to hear her voice isolated from the instrumentation . Please do more videos of Barbra . She has many songs out there that I cannot wait for you to discuss . Barbara Streisand is an emotional singer I appreciate. Her high notes were piercing with quite full time and cord closure. I think the thing about her pitch dropping through the vibrato / end of a phrase, in the lower range, is about the decreasing "energy" of the note towards the end. In my observation, classical singers seem to focus hard on energy efficiency throughout the note at all parts of their range, as much as possible, even with using vibrato. Maybe having a more breathy tone causes the breath energy to be more quickly dispelled, leading to an inevitable fall-off at the end (as reflected on the pitch monitor) .

Her voice is so powerful and amazing, when she hits some of these notes it causes me to cry. Wow.

Her apparent ease is all the more remarkable to me considering that she had such serious performance anxiety. What a unique voice, just unmistakable, and now it's much easier to understand why.

Some of the figures are not the singer not being able to hit the note, but intentional singing outside the 12 notes on the piano, like a guitar player bending the pitch.

I had no idea that she suffered from that. Reminds me of the great Lawrence Olivier. He would vomit before each and every live performance. He was terrified right up until the time he began to speak, then... magic.

@@tiffsaver Yeah, she didn't perform live for 27 years - though from time to time she sang to raise funds for some causes. She said many times she didn't enjoy performing, she only liked singing with orchestra in a studio.

Did you know that Sir Lawrence Olivier, the greatest actor in the world, vomited every time he had to go on stage?? Even the great Franco Corelli, for my money the greatest opera tenor who ever lived, actually had to be PUSHED on to the stage, permanently retiring in his prime because of his continual fears.

I used to listen to Barbra singing every day as my mum drove me to school over 40 years ago. I remember listening and watching this Concert on TV. Amazing voice. One of if not the best female vocalists of all time.

There are only a few that have a truly magnificent voice and Barbra has one. She can always give me chills.

Barbara Streisand is wonderful in concert. When I was a teenager, I thought she was one of the best, and wished that I looked like her (still think the same!). I would love to see her live again! ….Fil, thank you for how you explain the “why” of everything. It’s refreshing to listen to someone who is so knowledgeable, so humble, and so engaging!

If she sang in a language I didn't understand I would still be completely blown away by her ability to deliver goose bumps.

Simply a voice from the heavens. Great analysis.

This was from 1986 and it was her first live concert for about 15-17 years, and that was because of insecurity. (This concert was held in her back yard as a charity event)

These analyses just keep getting more interesting as I get better at viewing the wave forms. Thank you so much for such informative videos.

In the song Enough is Enough with Donna Summer, just as they were going into the disco part, Barbra held a note out for about a minute.

I've seen her in four concerts, she is flawless. Now that she's much older it's harder for her to hold the long note. She is, arguably, the best vocalist who ever lived.

It's great to see the objective proof of how fantastic Barbra is. I'd love you to do a Bee Gees song, particularly a live ballad like Run to Me from their peak in the 70s comparing Barry and Robin. There are some great performances from Chicago and Melbourne.

Fil another great analysis! Barbara has always made it look effortless, since the 60s, when I first saw her in movies and other performances. She always grabs the listeners attention when she "all of a sudden" hit the high notes. Thanks for the attention to the minute details!💖

I’ve sung all my life…My late Mom said that I was “born with a pencil in one hand (portrait/art) & a microphone in the other!” I was going to be part of an “Elvis Review” with the original “Jordanaires” who backed Elvis; it fell thru in the end -but the organizer/auditioner immediately said that I carry my voice just like Linda! (Wow! ❤️🎶 That’s just careful listening from age 12- as I’m self-taught…& still listening!)

What do the lines thru words mean? Weird!

The descending vibrato? I doubt it is subconscious. It is a deliberate part of fading the volume, softens the effect of the note. Descending pitches are relaxed and relaxing. Ascending pitches are exciting or alarming. It's what we do in our normal speech. Sometimes perfect pitch isn't the perfect note for a song.

Many years ago around the time of her singing in the movie Funny Girl I noticed that one of the reasons Barbara's voice has such a unique sound is that the waveform she produces which is her "tonal" signature born-in if you like as that she is almost two voices in one. Her sound has a very strong 2nd Harmonic that is an octave above the note her vocal cords are producing. It's very strong in proportion to the fundamental tone and gives her completely individual purity.

I feel singularly blessed to have lived through music from the mid 50's to today and have loved through all genres. Barbra was a later exposure for me as I didn't know her early work and first saw her in A Star Is Born. I then went to look for her work to discover a whole range of performances. I don't know music but I know what I like and have always felt she was exceptional. Your analysis tells me why. Ha Ha, "for those of you who sing". We all sing, Fil, just not very good!

Beautiful! I heard Babs could bend a note within singing the note. What it started out as changed and then sometimes led into the next note and sometimes returned back to the one she started with. Quality, Talent, Personality, Beauty................all in one voice. Wow!

I tried to follow you and wanted to be present while you were live on youtube, however, the monitor would not allow my thoughts to be seen/read. I felt that was not fair as many other comments were more inappropriate than mine = all is relative. So, "When someone shows you who they are. Believe them the FIRST time." And thus, I no longer visit you or your videos. I miss them.

You know Fil can sing when he matches the pitches of one of the greatest singers who ever lived.

Thanks for doing this analysis of Barbra Streisand who is one of the true mega stars. She has spanned over 6 decades of music. This lady has a fabulous voice & can sing many genres of music. She is a singer, actress & filmmaker & one of the few performers to have received awards in multiple fields of entertainment (Emmy, Grammy, Oscar & Tony). Love the musicals she was in especially "Funny Girl" & "Hello Dolly". She has so many great songs that were hits & she has done numerous duets with famous people.

With respect, I don’t care how accurate her vocals are, I simply am sometimes moved by her performance. She is a great artist with a great voice. Especially Yentl made a great impression on me.

She directed “Yentl;” it’s a beautiful soundtrack. Michele LeGrande had a part in it.

She is a legend I saw her in concert and her voice just melts you in your seat. And when it was over I didn’t want it over lol. I was in awe and shock with such a soothing voice.

I felt in love with her voice when I was 5 or 6..... 45 years ago... and remains the same up to today.... I always dreamed she could sing 🎤 for me early in the morning, sleeping in the same room where is located her piano... I keep dreaming.... I have goosebumps in 2 seconds with her voice....

Do all the analysis you can, pick apart every note she ever sang, for good or ill, and yet we still have to come down to realizing there was never a voice like hers before she appeared in the world, nor will there be one as perfectly ON after she's gone. Sui generis.

Great. Unmistakable voice. Makes it look easy.. Like to see how king of the falsetto Barry Gibb shapes up. Julie Andrews another seemingly perfect vocalist. Frankie Valli another guy with the high notes.

I've always admired Barbra Streisand for her acting but mostly for her magnificent voice where she can take anyone hearing her sing a sad song and make you cry due to the nature of the elements of her vibrato yet smooth voice that sends you to tears. Always a "great act" no matter what the song is titled. My favorite, "My Man" from "Funny Girl" when I heard her sing, I cried just watching her sing that song with so much trauma - it makes you aware you are in the presence of a great talented lady which is our Barbra.

This whole video is an excellent description of the combination of great natural talent and experience allowing excellent control of her instrument. Her expression in playing with the pitches is astounding. Thanks for the analysis.

Another artist with “liquid gold” for a voice. I’ve just watched your Bobby, Elvis, Karen Carpenter and Julie Andrews analysis. They all have that magic golden sound. I might be generalising a tad, but it seems singers from late 30’s through to (I’ll be generous here 80’s and that’s largely to include Whitney Houston) had technical better pitch or ability to control and work their voices, so that their live performances were just as good as a recorded version. If you go through the singer, some I recall: Nat King Cole, The Pretenders, The Drifters, Barry White, Dean Martin, Matt Monroe’s, Gordon MaCrae, Andy Williams, Tom Jones, Bing Crosby, obviously Elvis and Roy Orbison, Cliff Richards, and so many more. The females the list is equally as long. Singers had to be that good and more to get anywhere. There are some amazing singers nowadays, but I feel, because they can do so much in the recording studio. The natural pure voice seems to not be high on the list. When there is someone with a great voice, they have so much happening with sounds and scales gymnastics that it’s overkill and irritating to listen to. That’s my little ramble I would like to put forward a request for you to do an analysis on Olivia Newton John singing one of her early hits Sam. Thanks

Barbra Streisand is a technical genius and I am looking forward to you one day doing one of her more difficult songs "my man" "somewhere", etc to hear the accuracy of her vocals on those. Thank you for mentioning that she "might be hitting the note exactly where she needs to." We're looking at an isolated vocal compared to A440 here, but it's distinctly possible that the orchestra was a few cents off from A440, and thus she was actually "perfect." Either way, it's imperceptible to the ear when listening to the performance as a whole.

Your ability to disect and then explain the technical aspect of music, whether it is sound, pitch, the notes and their characteristics, or just how a performer is able to produce the sound they do, is truly amazing. I always loved her version of "Stoney End", a Laura Nyro composition. I think it was her first big hit and more rock and roll.

Hey there! : ) I was a maybe a pre-teen when Barbra came on the scene and always wanting to be a singer, she was magical to watch and hear on tv shows. I'm not sure if it was an interview, though I think in an article, "they" wanted to take out in her recordings the breath she'd take before a note and she refused as well as her refusing to do anything about her nose. How can one have a human perfect vocalist with talent and wanting to change that person?? So beyond me, it takes a lot of grit to stay yourself in life. Courage and self-determination to stay in the business. Love her always ~

My preference is for her early work (Down With Love and When the Sun Comes Out are two that come to mind) but this was great because if gave me my affirmation that she is that accurate of a vocalist. I would appreciate you analyzing James Taylor and one of his songs from the album "Gorilla". My husband who is a gospel singer always felt James was Pitch Perfect. I just loved his tone and smooth voice.

"Misty" would be interesting. I bet that vibrato would be a gigantic yellow squiggle.
