I am a 52 year old graduate having finished the JD at RMIT this year. I was an Intensive Care Nurse for 32 years and always wanted to do Law. I found that a lot of fellow class mates were older having done previous studies and working in various areas. Like me, there were teachers, Doctors, Nurses, policy workers, the list was wide. I agree the JD was very challenging with the amount of work and study. I was working as a Paralegal/Practice Manager at a rather busy legal firm and studying was a huge ask. Was it hard? Yes, but no. The study load and the amount of work required was heavy. I had no life for 4 years. It was a constant cycle of assignments and exams. Was the JD worth it? Yes. We employ Law Students as assistants and they are all under grads. The level of knowledge we got in the JD was well and truly above what the under grads get.

Thank you for watching! I hope your first few weeks have been great. There are a lot of readings as you would have discovered but truthfully I don’t really know anyone who got through all of them. You have to be selective and prioritize. With cases I would read the milestone ones and the rest have notes. Good luck!

Hi, COVID did not impact my studies - only impacted the way I graduated (basically it was online so not much fun!) I do know (from some friends who study at USYD currently) that studies were all moved online in stages and then some classes came back to in person.

Hi Shreya, once you are admitted to practice (ie after you've done your PLT) my understanding is you can practice in any state. There may be something you have to do to add yourself as a solicitor on the roll of the Supreme Court of that state, but absolutely nothing prohibiting you from practicing since you are admitted in a court. I got admitted in the Supreme Court of NSW and then applied to be admitted in the High Court of Australia as well. At our firm we even had lawyers come over from NZ and then had to just register in the Supreme Court. That was it!

Hey Julia, Love your video, thanks for sharing the knowledge and experience, I am based in NZ, and JD courses are normally online and block courses combination, so is it feasible to fly to OZ to attend the class if needed? Sounds a bit of challenging, but is it achievable? Also the important question is after completing the course, is it same as LLB students to gain registration as a qualified solicitor at all? Hi Steven, I think with the pandemic it was possible to do classes online and live in another place. I know someone for example who lives in Dubai and finished her courses at USYD online (had to wake up at night though, but doable). I did hear that in the next year all classes will resume in person so it is a bit of a risky strategy to rely on the online only situation. You could ask the faculty at the law school you want to go to what their policy is on that. Yes, the JD is the same as LLB once completed.

I am currently a construction project manager and I completed a degree in construction management. I am currently looking to further my career with a postgraduate degree like a JD which I feel will give me an edge in the management of contracts and making more well informed decisions. Hi Dave, a Juris Doctor is good if you're changing careers into law (from personal experience), other professions include consulting, politics, government jobs specifically in policy, legal advisor work, certain strategy. If you are looking at the management of contracts specifically (this is jut my opinion so please seek some further advice) I would think it is better to complete something like a master of law. You don't need to have an undergraduate law degree to do a master and the timeframes range from 1-2 years (part time from what I understand). You could probably achieve what you need in terms of qualification with a master of law - it will probably be more cost efficient and time efficient. The JD is a bit full on if you're not doing a complete overhaul of your career. That would be my opinion.

If I'm aiming for scholarship, is it better to do an LLB or a JD in Aus? I was thinking that if I do JD, I'd do an undergraduate in Global Studies and then do a JD, it'll be easier to get financial aid. What do you think? My ultimate goal is to get into policy analysis or legal advisors in NGOs.

Depends on what university If u look at for an international student for JD Juris Doctor 45,000-55,000 plus 5% in crease each year of ur tuition fees. At Sydney JD is 52,200+5% increase each year total years of study 3 years and all together $165,000 around that for 3 years of ur JD. Idk about other universities JD should be 3 years fees all together probably 165,000-200,000k at Least

Hi Ruby, no you cannot have the Dr title once you complete the JD. I was told the process to get into the University of Sydney where I studied was competitive so I applied to a few other universities in Sydney as well. I got accepted into all of them so I chose Sydney. The hours on campus varied with each semester, as it depends on the timetables of your classes. For the first 2 years of the JD however be prepared to be on campus every day from 9 am to about 5 pm or even later if you have tutorials and study groups.

Hi! Yes it’s possible - instead of doing the Juris Doctor you can complete an LLB which is a law degree with another degree such as a Bachelor of Arts or Commerce ( you pick) and this takes 5-6 years.

Hi Blake, I was balancing part time work, especially in my 2nd year. The JD Is an intense degree and your life can become all about study and work for about 2 years. In my 3rd year it was easier as it was mostly electives and I got to go on an exchange!

I don't know anyone personally who did a JD at ANU, however I do know a few undergraduates who have come from ANU. ANU is a great school and very reputable.

Yes you should able to get a job with an Undergraduate degree in LLB in Australia. If you are to move to a another country to do law most countries require JD degree for law

Melbourne or Sydney or other universe. Fee for international Student for Juris Doctor (JD) Fees are between 45,000-55,000 for international students plus fees do increase 5% each year or less. Domestic students fees are way cheaper but only way if ur are a domestic student is. Australian permanent resident or Australia citizen or Humanitarian Australian citizen

I am studying an LLB Honours at uni here in NZ as I maintained an A- average and my law degree is 4 years. A lot of the JD program is very similar and most of the papers are the same as the LLB Honours degree. Thats why there is no need for me to have a JD. Any law degree is is tough but manageable. My last year of my LLB Honours is 2024 and graduation will be in 2024 end.

Study in Australia isn’t easy But hard International fees are very expensive. For LLB it is at least 45K-58,000K you can only work 20 hours per week or 40 hours a fornite/40 hours every 2 weeks. Pay in Australia as an international student $18-27 or $700 per week It’s next to impossible to pay your tution fees you could pay for 1 semester but when it comes to 2 one you can’t. Plus you must follow the visa statement as well. Edit: your fees increase each year by 5% less or no more than 5%

I dont believe that doing a master will let you be admitted in Australia. It might have to be a re-qualification of your original law degree. For example, I have met students who obtained law degrees overseas and they were doing a JD (shorter version) to qualify in Australia.

Hi, if you want to practice law in Australia you will most likely have to graduate with a JD - some of your LLB degree courses may count towards some subjects so it may mean your degree is shorter. Please check with the relevant university however. Good luck!

Hi! Thanks for your message. A JD is a 3 year law degree you can obtain after your bachelors or another degree. An LLM is a master of law - this in itself is not a law degree. If you want to become a lawyer (any kind of lawyer), you will need to get either an LLB or a JD.

It really depends on the subject, your level of understanding and often the subjectivity of the market. It was relatively challenging to receive a HD at the university of Sydney because of bell curving. I heard that at other universities it is not as difficult.

@@JuliaKimMurphy Thanks. I am going to UWA, in the group of 8 and it's the best law school, at least in WA. I've heard that a High Distinction at a university like Notre Dame (WA) can be considered equivalent to a distinction or even credit at UWA, so that confirms what I thought a bit (different difficulties // bell curve ranks), thanks! Did you find that in terms of pure marks, not a bell curve, that it was marked in a similar way to high school? (70 decent but possibly disappointing, 80 good, 85 very good, 90+ almost unattainable).
