The Cylons didn't very nearly break Galactica's firewalls...they DID break her firewalls. Its a blink and you'll miss it moment, but when Gaeta (I think) was racing to disconnect Galactica from the network they were using, you see him bend down to pull the plug with the last firewall still intact on his display screen. When he pulls the plug and pops his head back up though, his screen in the background was showing that he was too late and the last firewall was down a split second before they had disconnected.

I have an alternative theory for the 2 'non functional engines'. Galactica at the time of the show was becoming a museum, it had been stripped down from what it once was, lots of it's armour had been removed and some of its gun placements, even so far that it only had one functional flight pod, even after the second cylon war , Galactica never reopened the second flight pod, it couldn't as it had the mechanism removed, so it's possible that the two engines had their parts removed knowing for its museum function it would work fine with 4 engines.

The designers of the ships really knew their stuff. There is a video that points out that the phones on the Galactica are set up to work without power so the various parts of the ship don't lose communications. The forward guns mounted on the underside of the bow were a perfect example of a set of dedicated weapons because they had zero arc of fire. Avoiding them simply meant moving away from the bow of the ship. However, Base Stars are not known for their maneuverability so having a set of stand-off guns to destroy them makes perfect sense. I'm willing to bet that the forward guns could be used for orbital bombardment, saving missiles and keeping the vipers close at hand for defense.

The 2 dormant engines are auxiliary plants. The others are main drives and the auxiliaries are fired if the Galactica loses thrust. She’s old, newer battlestars don’t have to rely on auxiliaries to maintain full thrust, their engines are designed for higher output.

At the very least, there isn't a fighter in the Star Wars universe that could live with a Viper. I guess a fairer 'Vs' matchup would be Galactica in the Babylon 5 universe. They both turn like a housefly, but I reckon a Star Fury could give a Viper a run for its money and then some on the manoeuvrability side. Seeing the mercury side by side with the two varients of the Jupiter class (no late war unfortunately i guess that would be a tad too powerful in game) you can reallt see the size difference between the two.

Hey guys. I was a fan of BSG back when Lorne Green was Adama. The later series, although better looking, and more accurate to the 'lore', was not as captivating to my older self. I liked the Battlestars so much, that I basically hijacked the idea for a Creative Writer's Group, loosely based on Star Trek (no Kirk, Spock, etc... just the technologies, but not the Next Gen and later). In that group, my aliens, were a bipedal feline race that was 50 percent larger (on average) than Humans. These aliens, rather than build massive numbers of smaller ships, built fewer, but Massive ships. I described them as an elongated 'faceted gem' shaped ship, with armored, paired 'bumps' along the trailing edge. These 'bumps' were armored panels covering the upper portions of Warp Nacelles, which were partially embedded into the main hull of the ship. In two rows along the spine of the ship, both ventral and dorsal, were Vertical Launch, Fighter bays. Recovery was in the Aft portion of the ship, between the eight armored nacelles. Central along the spine of the ship, both dorsal and ventral, were a pair of massive Rail Guns that fired projectiles the size of city buses or larger. Along both sides, and along the edges of the dorsal and ventral sections, were upwards of 200 quad-mounted, 6-barrel, rotary, rail guns for point defense, as well as over 40 Cruiser class Phaser banks. The ship also mounted over a dozen Torpedo Launchers... 8 to the fore, 4 to the aft, and 6 along each side. The vessel had a crew of 2400, along with a Marine Compliment of 6,000. The ship mounts 12 Impulse Engines, mostly clustered in four groups in the aft quarter on both sides of the vessel. Even with 8 nacelles and 4 MASSIVE warp cores, the ship was NOT 'fast', although it could keep up with most Fleet ships at Warp 7 or so. General dimensions: 2,657 m long, 742 m wide, and 228 m tall. The armor was my own creation. An alloy that almost requires 'printer' tech, or Industrial Replicators. I called this alloy TaC-TiC. Tantalum-Carbide and Titanium-Carbide, in molecule scale, repeating alternating layers. I had a friend with both a physics and chemistry degree work out the covalences of the atomic structure and its strength. It worked out to be around 70 times the strength of the best steels mankind can produce. And, it would have been at least 5 times the strength of 'Tri-Tanium' armor. There were two designs of the ship... The first one, as above, with 'only' 120 'fighters' assigned to it. The second, sacrificed the largest rail guns for three more longitudinal launching bay strips, and a further 360 fighters added to the original 120. A third version was postulated before the Writer's Group dissolved, which would have sacrificed ALL the fighters and the largest rail guns, for vertical launch, high impulse drive, missiles. Tipped with either very massive Nuclear, or Anti-Matter warheads. The only other ships my aliens made were Frigate Class ships that would leave anything 'Fleet' behind as if they were standing still. Highly maneuverable, and armed and armored like a Cruiser. Those ships had massively smaller crew compliments... 48 crew per ship. Half of which, in a pinch, would be 'boarding parties'. Another aspect of my aliens was that people were valuable... so they developed Powered Armor that made each soldier into a walking tank, that could fire a pair of Phasers, micro missiles, and a couple of arm mounted rotary miniguns for anti-infantry use. The writer's group lasted for over 10 years, before 'life' got in the way of creative writing. Ah, well.

In most scenes the Galactica is restricted in speed by the max speed of the Fleet. As most of the fleet is civilian, I seriously doubt they could match the speed of the Galactica on all engines, so they just don't use maximum thrust, ergo the two mid engines are not used.

It might be a tiny and insignificant thing to get hung up on, I know, but... I've seen all six main engines fire on the Galactica multiple times throughout the show and the mini-series, as well as some moments where they wouldn't. I know that most of the time people don't really focus on the engines when it's the Vipers we're trying to follow, or other ships of the fleet, so it might be easy to miss, even more so with the energetic camera movements and such... But those engines definitely all work, and most of the time too. Dunno which version of the show y'all were watching x3

Regarding the number of engines that was questioned in your video here. In the last episode, where Kara makes her blind jump, shortly after the images of the ship breaking it's back, you get a rear view of the Galactica where you can see the engines spinning back up after the jump. You can clearly see the two engines that are within the area of the aft hull spin up with 3 of the outer engines spinning up before the shot cuts.

Either that or since galactica was already heading for democission those large two middle engines were already broken and there was no need to repair them since it was already going to be stashed and they were unable to repair them due to lack of parts during the war - basically the kind of situation where you need actual shipyard to do the repair.

That third battlestar was named promethus i believe. . Apparently columbia was a bit different she carried more fighters than normal Jupiter's.

There wasn't a third pylon initially, it's a BSG : Deadlock addition, which caused a stir and then the dev team created a Galactica "modernized". And there was another Jupiter besides Galactica on scorpia shipyards which got destroyed and another one completly wrecked on orbit of Caprica I believe during the 2nd Cylon war. But that's nitpicking.

I'm also curious if his maths took into account the length of the launch tubes that the vipers would have to reach those speeds. That could make the acceleration much more comfortable, as would the direction of the G forces since they are directed backwards and not down towards the feet.

About the 4 or 6 engines debate. Maybe one of the following reasons for their never being used. 1) They were dismantled for their use for parts in a newer ship? Problem: how interchangeable are the parts? 2). They are being used for parts for the other four engines built in the pods attached to the outside rear of the ship. Problems with this: reducing the maximum speed And acceleration. Other problems? Probably more than I can think of right now, it is getting pretty late here...

Looking at a few cutaways I estimated a thickness of up to 10m of armor for the Galactica (a Jupiter) in some places, including voids (which are actually important for defeating certain types of AP munitions). That is absolutely insane and it would explain how she was able to take a fucking nuke to the face and keep flying afterwards. Also, that flak field would be a lot more deadly IRL. Nothing without significant armor would survive in the direction the CIWS guns were firing, and even then we are talking about hypervelocity fragments so armor might not be that effective. Then again, we can probably assume that a civilization that has been fighting wars in space for centuries probably has superior armor to ours

Wel actually, if you reverse engines Electrically, they can produce power. The issue is that you burn up engine fuel. So there is a really "Bad" tradeoff. The worse your fuel situation is, the more Ugly the issue gets.

As I said on the Mercury video the facetank the sun thing isnt crazy. Nukes do not have the ability to slag meters of metal, they burn to fast and without the shockwave they dont produce a terible amount of destructive force. The radiation would be eaten by the metal and the heat would as well. You would ablate some but it wouldnt have the ability to burn through meters of metal. The only way to really make a nuke a certain kill on a ship is to make it so big that nothing can survive the radioactive hit (Nova Bomb) or to punch the nuke inside the armor so it DOES produce a shockwave by using the ships own internal atmosphere.
