Junkers Ju 87 Stuka
Спорт
The Junkers Ju 87 or Stuka (from Sturzkampfflugzeug, “dive bomber”) was a German dive bomber and ground-attack aircraft. Designed by Hermann Pohlmann, it first flew in 1935. The Ju 87 made its combat debut in 1937 with the Luftwaffe’s Condor Legion during the Spanish Civil War and served the Axis forces in World War II.
It was armed with bombs (500 kg), two fixed machine guns 7,9 mm MG17 in the wings and a movable machine gun MG15 7.9 millimeters in the rear cabin.
This one was an Italian Air Force plane which was probably shot down by cannon fire by air defense from the Kingdom of Yugoslavia in April 1941. It was found south of the island of Žirje, Croatia.
The wreck is in good condition and the front part of the fuselage, wings and tail of the aircraft are connected and complete. The engine is about 20m from the aircraft.
The value of this finding is certainly exceptional in world terms, since there were only 5709 aircraft produced at that time. There are only two of this type preserved in the world, in museum exhibitions in London and Chicago.

Lol. Yes it really dove on it's last mission. I guess it's target was the ocean floor. Honestly it's kind of sad to see these planes at the bottom of the ocean like that and know that they can't be enjoyed beyond being a diving attraction. I would like to see one of these in person without the need for diving gear and actually hear that engine roar, and see it fly. I've seen some world war 2 aircraft, but never saw a B17, P51 mustang,or a stuka. I've wanted to see those three for a very long time.

@@WinstonSmith1997 The Stuka had an automatic turn up initiated by pilot with a defined angle. The Allies found out about the angle and shot down the Stukas as they returned upstairs. Luftwaffe found out about this an alternated the angle so that Allies had mir difficulties in shooting them down while going up. The automatic had to be as the G-force in the turning is so heavy that no blood is received by the eyes and front part of brain. A lot of pilots had mysterious crashes, some comrades thought that these pilots got crazy due to the constant effect of G-force damaging brain. On the other side the Stukas were a precise weapon, knocking out anything the Allies had, even bid ships. The point was getting close as possible to the target to get exact hits. Like on Maxim Gorki Fort Sewastopol, where the biggest guns Germans had shot without smashing it, but Stukas finished it in few rounds.

The aircraft has been lying in salt water for approximately 80 yrs and no doubt corrosion has badly weakened the structure. With some kind of expertise, can this wreckage be restored to how it was when it left the air flotilla that morning in 1943? It reminds me😊 of when I snorkeled off Crete almost 22 years ago with a guided tour where there was a downed wreckage of a Messerschmitt BF 109 at a snorkeling depth of around 10 - 12m. It was in surprisingly good condition though for being lying around as long as on the bottom, i.e. not a cracked hull or the engine next to the cockpit. The propeller was intact but of course bent on all sides. The glasses were preserved in the cockpit except for bullet holes. However, no bomb underneath. Was there any bomb left under the Stuka?😮

So in april 1941, this would have been the B variant of the stuka dive bomber before the bigger fuel tanks were added on the R and later D variant. This was a very accurate dive bomber. If the luftwaffe would have maintained air superiority, this plane would have still been effective in 1945 and no need to waste the Focke Wulf 190 fighter plane by converting it to the F variant fighter/bomber role.
Planes in the water for 80 years will literally fall apart now. That one looks intact enough to make patterns from. All the magnesium would be gone. There might be ten stukas flying now, incredible airplane. And incredible footage thanks for sharing.

+@abundantYOUUniverse The Stuka has been underrepresented in museums as a major player in WW2 aviation. This is because there were not enough surviving examples, only two in fact, and incomplete wreckage from several more examples. This underwater wreck in Croatia is Ju-87R-2 that was flown by the Italian Regia Aeronautica and was shot down while attacking ships. (There is another Stuka out in those waters somewhere that was also shot down that day.) Building any Stuka, flying or static has been difficult because there are so few of them and the drawings and documentation for them is incomplete or missing. Billionaire Paul Allen's museum obtained the wreckage from two Ju-87R that were lost in Russia and used them for reference to build their flying Ju-87R-4, although it is not finished yet. They also had engineers get detailed 3D scan data from the Ju-87R-2 in the Museum of Science in Chicago and this allowed them to complete the engineering to build a Stuka to flight specification. Hopefully the data gained from the Paul Allen restoration can be used for future rebuilds of Ju-87R series wrecks. Other variants will require more data or reverse-engineering to restore.

There are only 2 complete Stuka left in the world and none is with flying status. As far as I know there is only another one under restoration process from more than 10 years and looks like it is a very difficult process. A few wrecks are also on display. Due to the huge amount of knowledge and ressources for a restoration project, I doubt strongly that this one, and others, will not be left slowly disintegrating at the bottom of the seas. Like quite all surviving planes from WWII and specially in Germany, they were scrapped due to the need in raw materiel to rebuild these countries. Furthermore, Stuka was remaining sinister memories with sound of its siren and lots were eager to forget this plane in particular.

It isn't the Red Sea (what is?) but Croatia has lovely clear water. This dive looks shallow - to know the depth would be good.
Sadly, I think the Ju 87's appearance belies the true state it's in. Preservation (let alone restoration) would be a massive project taking years. +@jamescook5738 It lies in Croatian waters and is property of Croatia. I think there are still some preservation groups trying to save it locally.

Save it
Wow… sorry fishes, that has to be recovered, surely!? 😮 Has someone already removed the crankshaft cover.. it doesn’t look like it was smashed off in the crash?? The engine surely could be recovered even if the aircraft can’t due to corrosion?

+@waynester71 The crankcase cover (like many other engine fittings) was magnesium and it would have corroded away very quickly.
There are according to historical records supposedly hundreds more of all varieties but a lot! deeper and in far better condition ,,,those !are the craft that need lifting now for preservation, purely for an example of that terrible time in war…
All one needs is the data plate

I love ❤how Clive Caldwell RAAF shot down 5 of these in a single sortie ! Just shows how vunerable these planes were to Allied pilots!!!!

+@me55555able It was an Italian Air Force Stuka and the crew survived. Another Stuka was shot down nearby and the crew were killed. 12-April-1941.

Yes and no. It lies at a depth of just 33m (110ft.) and a saving it would be technically possible.

@@matjazbravc I'm not sure the metal could withstand the ascent to the surface. Was the plane downed around Italy? England (unlikely because the English channel is choppy and rough) Spain? What country is it off the coast of? I'm not going to ask what section of the country because of thieves, but the country might be nice to visit as well as the wreck.
