When you turn 60 "no" has really evolved into a strange creature. Me time is not a luxury, it's mandatory. I live with a very social man who has a million friends that he enjoys very much. I also enjoy them but....I enjoy the quiet time time his going out to play with his friends provides me. I put in my years of racing around making sure my kids were the priority and their lives were full. Now I'm unapologetically selfish with my time.

Yay for us slow knitters! Watching knitting podcasts, scrolling thru knitting Instagrams I follow can throw me into a little ‘I need to start cranking out some of these projects NOW!’ hyperventilating. Deep breathing & a few “ommms” brings it all under control. Thank you for sharing 🤗

Loved this and all of your podcasts, really! I am always left with things to remind myself and I love that you remind us to not feel the “scarcity” feeling and must go and buy everything! And…from previous podcasts, I have been reminded that I can knit the sock the exact same way I usually do and just grab and use a chart or another technique I like but can keep to whatever I want to knit, and whatever way I want to knit! I look forward to your podcasts! Thank you for being a beacon for us! 🫶 And I have a pop-up too, so I’m like “oh yeah, this is ma gurl!” 🙌🙌🙌😆👍

I LOVE your attitude! Knitting is not a race. It is something I do for the joy it gives me. I so love the process of knitting that I am sad when a project is finished. I like having 3 or 4 (or more) projects on the needles so I can jump right to another project when one is finished. At 70+ years old, I know that life is too short to knit on something that isn't bringing me joy. Love your podcasts! ❤❤❤

What a refreshing video! I am absolutely the same…..never knit the second sock straight after the first. Get way too bored! And I am also just knitting what I want whenever I want and not setting any deadlines or putting any pressure on myself. It’s a hobby for me after all. Why would I stress myself to get things finished. Although sometimes it’s definitely difficult to remember that!

Your honesty is appreciated! when I first started watching you tube for knitting I was so overwhelmed......feeling the pressure to make hundreds of things just to feel like I was accomplishing something. Plus all the beautiful designs and idea were an inspiration but at the same time it took me a while to realize that I needed to relax and choose special things, It takes so long to make one thing that I should choose wisely and make it special. enjoy the process as you say. I like your inspiration and also your taste. I like the yarn you choose/colors so I like that and I don't feel obligated to buy things. but I have to say everytime I do see something I love - like your progress keepers they are sold out.....LOL But that just means I don't need it, right! LOL

Absolutely loved watching this episode Nikol! I think as we become older our priorities change, and we don’t care about saying no to things as we did when we were younger. I for started this in my 30s, and have no regrets if it. Now in my late 50s, I definitely say no to things that do not feel right to me, or things that encroach on my time. As far as Instagram, I use it for inspiration only and have learned not to feel pressured to continually post. I post when I and if I feel like it. Which sometimes means I can go for long spurts.😊 Enjoy your time!

Thank you for being you! You are the person I had hoped to be by this time in my life. I've watched many, many knitting channels and far too many of them are overselling their own yarns or they receive all sorts of 'free gifts' of yarns, notions, and such, and those are the ones I have stopped watching as they have became more of a commercial ~ buy this, but that. Now, I only watch those who are sincere about family or making. At 72yrs of age, I'm running out of time to be buying into anything commercial. Sending hugs & good wishes for a beautiful July ~ 🤗💕🌻

❤ Great podcast content! I was, am a late bloomer in so many ways and for so many reasons and now I am so free and so comfortable in my body and my brain. My internal dialogue has improved so so much. I say NO comfortably too now … with no residual guilt or anger. I spent a lot of years doing what I had to do and should do and that was fine but also too much time doing what was expected of me by others with their own agendas. A lot of unnecessary things. But alas, no longer. I say … you do you and I will do me (nicely, of course! That part of me happily remains). Time here is not infinite and I will no longer have people propping themselves up at my expense. ❤. Your words really have resonated with me today …. As I now easily choose to shine and choose joy and working with yarn is so magical to me and brings me so much of that JOY. Thank you and all the best, Joyce

So I appreciate what you said about not feeling like you have to buy everything we see one your channel. I never feel that way but thank. You for acknowledging that. Such a fabulous Vlog today, Nikol. It took me until turning 60 my last birthday to realize that I can say no. Last year was a very scary year and It was in my face that we are only on this earth for a short time. I have knit and crocheted more this year than I ever have. Being creative is me and I needed to be me for me this year. I made some people really mad because I have been making tons of things and refusing to sell to them. I made it for me not because I necessarily wanted the item but I wanted to see if I could do it. I did and it’s part of me. Quit telling me that you deserve a part of me, that’s my choice! Geesh, was that inside of me this whole time? 😳 Thanks, Nikol. Enjoy your summer however you see fit!!! 🌻

This craft of knitting we all enjoy should simply be for just that: enjoyment. Thank you for sharing a passage from Knitting Pearls that spoke to you. It is so freeing to stop being controlled by what others think of us and just live in authenticity. Boundaries are a beautiful thing. Both asserting them and respecting others’ boundaries. They make life so much more peaceful. We can all use a little more peace.

Dear Nikol, It is a pleasure watching your videos and listening to your thoughts. We seem to be the same age (I'll be 45 in December) and I can tell you that 40 did not come easy to me. I went into the 40s kicking and screaming.... there was no grace in it whatsoever ;) My transformation with boundaries however did start when I was around 37, and oh boy am I still learning. As far as yarn, I have never knitted with hand dyed (except my own experiments) but I did purchase four sweater quantities the other week (there was some crazy sale). Luckily I don't tend to fomo when I see other knitters' stash, but sales always get me and I stock up like there is no tomorrow... crazy I know. Having said that, that speckled yarn of your vanilla sock is very pretty :) I hope you are well and wishing you a lovely and relaxing July. Ivana ❤

Ivana, I love that you mostly knit with your hand spun yarn. I have thought about learning, but my skin is so sensitive, I’m afraid I would waste my time and money on more rustic wools I couldn’t use. Do you have any recommendations for something very soft that I might start with?

@@ThePineCottage Merino is a safe option I would think and relatively easy to spin. And from camelids, I would choose baby llama, although only if you have some way to blend it. Otherwise, go for merino 23 microns or less... one of my favorites. Ivana

I couldn't agree with you more! I have become very frustrated in the past with the 'push' for speed in the knitting world and this is SO NOT what its about for me. It is my relax and my favourite down time activity and it was quickly not becoming that because I was feeling like I didn't fit into this 'new' knitting world. I avoid the MKAL's for this very reason, feel like I can't keep up and after working for decades in a very stressful multitasking environment , I have put my brakes on big time!
